What programming-related computer skills should I teach?

Looked up on Wiktionary. Apparently, "polish" is /ˈpɑlɪʃ/, and "Polish" is /ˈpoʊlɪʃ/. But I swear, these two sound samples are identical. In a blind test, I'd never be able to tell which is which.
-
@Gąska Possibly related to how some people can't differentiate between "ball" and "bowl".

polish, to shine something: /ˈpɒlɪʃ/
Polish, of Poland: /ˈpəʊlɪʃ/I think those are about right. My IPA-fu is not perfect.
From my experience this difference is purely theoretical. That's why I was surprised that it exists. TIL

I suppose it depends on accent. But the two are very different for me.
-
@Gąska Mod vs mode, or cod vs code.

Yeah, probably.
-
@Zecc "mode" is pronounced "mowd", which is very fucking different from "mod". But there's no audible "w" in "Polish".
-
@Gąska They're not that different. Also, «no audible "w" in "Polish"» is a matter of opinion.
What if I write it as Poelish, then?
-
@Gąska There's no w, but there is a long "o", at least in local US English. Polish as in cleaning is "pah-lish", Polish as in the country is "poh-lish". (Like the "w"s from before, the "h"s here are trying to represent the difference in vowel sounds.)
-
It's amazing how much the way you hear vowels is impacted by where you grew up.
-
@kazitor As far as I can tell in the Texas Panhandle
mash

would be the same. Not sure. They sayworsh
forwash
...
-
@Gąska Also amazing is how many of our idiomatic phrases in English have fairly racist roots.
-
@Gribnit amazing? More like expected.
-
@Gąska There's literally a joke and spawned idiomatic phrase about not being able to tell Polish from polish. It's racist! Not terribly so, just fairly so.
fucking language. But it's a good language overall, in that it keeps on churning every useful word into itself inexorably...

Q. What is the difference between aqui and aqa? [Both words mean here in Spanish]
A. You put a key in a ca[r].

That's the problem with kids these days. Always blaming made up diseases like lysdexia, rather than accepting their own mistakes

I think every CS program should have a resume/interview component.
When I graduated, finding a job was the part that took me by surprise. There was just no guidance on that. At all. Even my internship, I completely lucked into it. I think I went to the civil service commission website, which is gone now because even the state offshores everything to Hindustan these days. I know this was 15-20 years ago but when your options are the employment section of the city newspaper and a list published by the government, I can't help but think the education system failed in some way.
Even now, I literally do not know what's so difficult about getting an interview, much less finding a job, in an industry that screams about a talent shortage. Is my resume lousy? Do I answer questions "wrong?" Is not being on Facebook worse than being on Facebook? Who the fuck knows. I'm just about cynical enough to think the reason they don't do any of this is because they can't sell CS degrees to Americans if their only job advice is "be Indian."

Good, because you can’t :) There’s no Shift+Del equivalent in macOS — everything has to go to the trash first (again, unless you’re using the terminal).
Unless things have changed recently, Option + Command + Delete will delete files without going through the Trash. Pretty sure if you throw in a Shift, it won't even ask for confirmation. And there are shortcuts to instantly delete everything in the trash too.
