The peril of "cheap" domains

We needed a domain for internal use. Boss cheaped out and bought an
.icudomain, which is like the cheapest of the cheap "premium" domains on namecheap, for like $1 or something.Except, oops. That price is a giant scam, because after first year (when you have all your infrastructure well and tied to the domain), price jumps to like $15, which is more than a
.com.
This isn't even the worst I've seen, some TLD-s jump to twice the price of the Big Three or more.
Boss: "Oh, OK. It doesn't mater, it's not that much money anyway."
Except, now we need to test DNSSEC and we can't get it for this shit domain. Only the top 15 or so TLD-s are supported on namecheap.
What the fuck is the point of all these stupid TLD-s they are adding? They are not cheaper, they are not better, advanced features don't work and no one takes them seriously anyway. Try explaining to customer that they should go to "mybusiness.business" instead of "mybusiness.com" to buy from you.
This recent attempt to extend domain space away from com/net/org has been a colossal failure so far.

I came across this list of TLDs which appears to be extensive. I can see almost all receiving some sort of major adoption.

@cartman82 I somewhat agree. The only TLD I see as having a real usage is the xxx domain for adult sites because, why not.
Thing is for all others businesses are going to buy up the .com domain anyway and redirect, even adult sites are going to buy the .com version and redirect to .xxx if that becomes what they really use. It's all about branding, even Microsoft and IBM will buy Microsoft.xxx and IBM.xxx because well, branding. SO yes nothing more than a money grab.

Money. Nothing more.
If you own any reasonably well known domain, now you have to buy a couple dozen other domains to fend off the squatters and scammers (microsoft.biz, microsoft.info, etc........)

At one time, suck.co.ck was available. I wanted to buy it but it was a bit expensive and I'm not really in any sort of business that would need that.

.com.I've always felt that domain names should cost at least $200 a year. Maybe more. If you aren't willing to spend that much then you aren't serious and need to get the fuck off the Internet.

Note that it's not $15 a year, it's $15 for two years. Which is roughly equivalent to the struckthrough price on the initial offer, which means "anyone who didn't see that coming deserves it".
The DNSSEC part sucks, though.
PS: When it comes to weird TLDs, these days I tend to see
.runfor stuff linked to speedrunning communities.

If you had a really popular website devoted to speedrunning called medinoc.com, now you have to register medinoc.run and a few others to prevent people from impersonating you. Its a blatant cash-grab and nothing more.

Not necessarily. When some local Polish artists group has registered the gmail.pl domain (it made sense for them - the abbreviated name of the group was GMAiL), Google has simply sued them into oblivion.
