:beers: The Beer Topic
-
Continuing the discussion from If Columbus was locked in a Fox with a can of Joan of Arc beans, he would invest in $JPM:
We should probably get this jeffed to a Beer thread where I can appropriately geek out about things without culturally appropriating this shit thread.
Let's just start a new topic. I want hear this beergeekery as someone who prefers drinking locally brewed beer (or beer imported from countries which Do It Right™) over the generic cheap stuff.
Recently I've mostly been drinking this:
(and others from here)Or this:
(and all of the others from here)
-
Local: Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik
Less local: Maredsous and OrvalHonorable mention: grimbergen, veddet
Mobile is a barrier to adding pictures
-
So, this is the thread where everyone trolls me with great beer suggestions that I can't actually buy? Fine, I can play that game, too.
This year's local beer of the day has been Angry Angel from Big Boss.
-
Fruity non- sweet: rodenbach and liefmans farao
Sweet: Liefmans Kriek and framboise (perfect to get the lady drunk)
-
I've never had any of those
I still want to get some of the beer from the Westvleteren Brewery too - I think a Belgium beer "road trip" might be in order in the next few months.
-

Liefmans Frambozenbier is
Fruili too.
-
Westvleteren
I know one bar in Brugge who serves it.
At the monks you need to buy 1x 24 unmarked bottles in a wooden crate
-
I can't think of anything to contribute at this time, as all the local breweries around me are pretty small and you're not likely to find any of them anywhere. There are a few places around here that serve trappist beers, though, which is great.
-

I'm all for that. It's not that far away.
A 400 mile round trip is fine for good beer, right?
-
Heineken.
-
-
I know it isn't good but I like it.
-
So, I'm supposed to post random beer from small breweries that I like here?
http://factionbrewing.com/defcon-ii/
Since I don't have any pictures of beer bottles (they don't bottle any of their beers AFAIK), here are some random pictures of the brewery:

Scotch-Ale
Yes, that's 9.0%.
-
"Only" 6.7%, but a really nice German Doppelbock. For some reason, this beer is available in many stores in the US, but really hard to find in Germany (unless you're near Munich).
-
Heineken.
Just because they culturally-appropriated a couple of white girl songs to make some cool commercials for a James Bond movie doesn't mean it's good beer.
I suppose it's worth remembering, for future reference, that you like this stuff: it's a useful touchstone as for how much weight to assign to things you say.
-
Shouldn't you already know that his opinions are worthless (no, no that isn't fair; they have negative value)?
-
I just wanted to formally note it.
-
-
I don't like Ales that much, too light a taste. Cream Stouts and Porters it is!

-
Waterloo dark. It tastes like Guiness, minus the bitter flavor of a broken dildo that was just used to anally rape a contestant in a Taco Bell eating contest.
-
-
Alcohol, like all other liquids, does not have a quality modifier.
However, there are base values for each brewable ingredient.
I don't know what the ABV is, but it's high enough that a cat will forget how to breathe after drinking four servings.

Brugse zot:
Straffe Hendrik:
Maredsous:
Orval:
Grimbergen:
Damn these come in more colors then I rememberVedett:
Rodenbach:

I'm a wine person.
I do not get beer. It tastes like piss on bread to me.
It's always a thing of curiosity to observe people interested in beer.
-
-
The only local beer I tried worth a damn:
http://www.pivnica-medvedgrad.hr/stalna-piva-2/ (site is full of fancy JS, too much of a pain to c/p stuff).
I actually never knew most of them are below 5.0% alcohol vol. which is pretty much the standard for bottled piss here. Huh.
-
You mean Foster's isn't
kangaroo piss that ferments the 3-6 weeks it would take to travel across the Pacific in a freight liner? What madness this is!
-
Straffe Hendrik
Yes! One I can actually find around here! At a coffee shop called Benelux of all places, but it still counts!
-
At a coffee shop called Benelux of all places
You do know that the Be in Benelux stands for Belgium, don't you?
-
Yes, I get the Be-Ne-Lux thing. I was just remarking that the best place in town to get Belgian beer on draft is a coffee shop. If only that coffee shop also sold the stuff they do in the Netherlands...
-
If only that coffee shop also sold the stuff they do in the Netherlands...
Mentally I can not grok a coffee shop that sells only coffee ...
-
It appears the WiFi I'm on at the moment isn't quite as free as I thought...

Not that I get it very often but rauchbier aka smoked beer.
-
Sounds like something I'd try
-

I fucking love alcohol snobs. Beer, wine, whiskey, it's no different "You haven't spent the time and money I have on learning to notice the subtle differences in these drinks, so I'm better than you"
Some that I like:
-
Don't think I've had Tribute, but Doom Bar is
-
My 6th form college was literally across the road from St Austell Brewery. Fun times
-
-
I fucking love alcohol snobs.
I'm no booze snob. I am, however, willing to call crappy booze crappy.
Heineken's somewhat more drinkable than, say, Budweiser, I'll give it that.
-
I am, however, willing to call crappy booze crappy.
That's not what you're doing though, is it? You're calling a liking for booze you consider crappy a reason to never listen to someone. That makes you a booze snob
-
You're calling a liking for booze you consider crappy a reason to never listen to someone.
You're overthinking this. I was just going for a quick zinger.

-
...says the guy who likes Heineken.
The fuck? What does one have to do with the other?
-
I was about to ask, "is that the Iron Maiden guy?" before I saw the label on the neck. Iron Maiden beer. Huh.
-
-
-
I also like Guinness for imported brand, and for local one I'll name San Miguel.
Btw, I'll add that there is a problem in adding data-uri image here.
