Oh, goddamnit. That couldn't have happened at a better/worse time. Let's try this again.

@Polygeekery The green theme alone s giving me eye cancer
-
WTF, you have to have 50 posts before you can reply? What kind of nonsense is that?
-
Heh, I think I know which forum you're trying to
shitpost toaccess. Is it really wise to call them idiots?
-
"Yeah, let's put all new users in read-only mode until they get enough posts and reputation."

Your 6 posts were all topics you started? Or can you reply to your own posts?
Btw, you can edit the OP if the upload gets fucked up.

I prefer to call ourselves staunch advocates of self-defense.

That was the real fuckup. I will try to go in to more details about how fucked up the rest of those forums are.

What's great is I guarantee you the spambots they're trying to thwart are still getting through. In fact, I bet they started out with a threshold of 5 and as they continued getting spammed, increased it gradually until they reached this point. Next week they'll increase it to 100 and wonder why they're still getting spammed relentlessly and there are no new members.
-
@The_Quiet_One well, that screenshot was from when I attempted to PM another member.
They have a classifieds section where people can post things for sale or trade. It is a forum local to our state. Part of the rules is that you have to have 50 posts in order to post to the classifieds section of the forums. Makes sense, sort of, you don't want a bunch of people coming there just to spam with scam listings.
But you also have to have 50 posts in order to reply to anything posted there, and you have to have 50 posts in order to PM anyone.
This is a moderately active forum, but it is very cliquish. They are not exactly welcoming to new members and they put a barrier to entry for new members. Keep in mind that this forum actually does have good information, but it is not super conversational like WTDWTF is. When they instituted the 50 post rule there were several members who are probably just introverts who suddenly could not PM anyone to purchase through the classifieds and they had been members for many years, just lurkers.
Oh, and if you want you can spend $20/year and get that restriction lifted. Because of course you can.
So, as a consequence you find a lot of useless posts there. Someone will want to buy something from the classifieds and go make 50 three-word posts in order to make the cut. They even know this because when you go through threads the old guard clique will make remarks like "Keep going, you are halfway to 50". There is even a thread that got locked after 476 pages that was nothing but new members bitching about the 50 post rule.
They are trying to bludgeon people in to doing what they wish and bitching about it when they do. In my opinion they are ripe for picking off with new forum software under non-mismanagement. I spent the weekend considering doing just that. It would be a very easy win, IMHO.

In my experience, a successful poach is very difficult, even if the original site sucks balls. I've only seen it once in my lifetime and ironically the original forum was actually quite successful and good, it's just that the new site had a different angle in how they wanted the community to evolve and they were very successful. There weren't even hard feelings from the original site's owner.
But, anyways, I wonder how many people actually pay the $20.
-
@The_Quiet_One I would not want to poach the existing members. I would want to make a place for the people who don't participate because they are not part of the clique. A younger forum for younger members. The current one would probably exist for a long time after. Cliques gonna clique.
There are a surprising number of site supporters.

And there it is. They figured out how to monetize it!

They also sell advertising on their site for local shops, and anyone who has a business has to pay to have an advertiser's account if they mention their business at all.

Might I recommend Discourse?

@pie_flavor You might, but other TDWTFers with experience might not take your recommendation seriously.

I thought about this further. It would actually make more sense if they charged a fee in order to use their classifieds instead of having a 50 post rule. They are gaming the system so that if a lurker (which most people who use a forum are) finds an item they want to buy then they post a bunch of bullshit to hit the 50 posts. They are gamifying bad behavior.

Are there ads on the site? Do they take a commission from sales?

@pie_flavor you're making the assumption that measurements of Discourse will be consistent between you and your reader with your you there, you.

NodeBB is demonstrably worse at fuckin' everything. The UI sucks donkey dicks, feature design was done as well as C++'s and everything breaks all the time, the whole thing is twice as slow, and so on. Maybe Discourse was a little bit buggy when you used it but it's constantly gotten better - the same can't be said of NodeBB, and as time goes on it just keeps getting buggier. Just admit it. The only reason you don't like Discourse is Jeff.
