B*****M and France to go to war!!!1!!

Because of french fries....
-
“Eve must have first fried frites for Adam because it is natural but that would not have been in Belgium,” he said. “Unless Belgium is the Paradise. I didn’t think it was, but I know that paradise is not in France.”
shots fired!

Don't tell the French but Jacques Brel, Tintin, Les Schtroumpfs, Stromae ... are all Belgian too

The Belgians can keep Hergé. Tintin is full of blatant colonialism.
-
@CHUDbert The US, obvs.

But there is no excuse for more recent Belgian comics

@bjolling When is that first panel from?
-
@blakeyrat 1946. Though Wikipedia says the original black and white version is from @931, but I don't know if the art style was same or different.
-
-
@Gąska Oh. The comment about "more recent" comics made me think it was like 90s or something.

You are correct about the timeframe for Tintin, except that we want to know the age of the left panel from that Twitter post, which doesn't look like Herge's style and coloring.

The recent one is from 2017
Edit: hard to find international references. Seems to have been a local shit storm
-
@bjolling Yeah but France invented freedom in 1791.
-
@anonymous234 No, they invented Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité. No freedom, just beheadings...
-
@CHUDbert <> Technically the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen dates from 1789, not 1791. It does not contain "liberté, égalité, fraternité" though, even if the very first article of states the first two of those ("men are born free and equals").
"Fraternité" gets mentioned slightly later in various more or less formal contexts, but the three don't become the motto of the French Republic until 1848.

-
@CHUDbert Also, and for a more -ish answer, France waited until 1792 to bring freedom to B*****m.

I just thought, France should have used that opportunity to adopt that name as well, and start reclaiming the term "land of freedom" for itself to confuse American nationalists.
-
That would have been fun.
But that whole fries thing didn't really get much traction here. It was mentioned in the news, but it was considered pretty trivial/petty ("so they renamed some food because of a political disagreement? big deal.").
Not to mention French fries aren't actually considered a typically French thing in France ; at least part of the population consider them to be from Belgium, and I'd agree with that (I've tasted Belgian fries, and they indeed are better than the ones we get in France).

It went right into the newspaper articles making fun of Americans and their leaders, along with GWB choking on his pretzel (no here...) and such.
-
Yeah. What I meant is that the reaction was not outrage.
