Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA
-
Also, in Windows Phone, this was just a built-in OS feature that carriers couldn't disable.

Right; and that's part of my "issue" thinking tethering is more common. I used the phone OS that didn't suck ass for most of those years.

@Lorne-Kates bro I listen to music, fuck itunes

I need to root my phone
If you aren't going to root your Android, you might as well just buy an iPhone.
Why's that?
Because if you're going to not customize, and just accept the bullshit given to you-- then go with the product that has the nicer interface and support.
Rooted Android

iPhone>>
non-rooted Android.I'd rather go with the one that has better features, TYVM.
Sooo.... Android?

@blakeyrat said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:
I had the OG iPhone plan for ages (unlimited data for like $30 when they introduced the iPhone 3G)
Heh, I remember when I had Windows Mobile 5 and that plan, and the fine print said "if you use more than 5GB/month you're torturous and abusive and get banned permanently". And a few of my friends with iPhones actually hit it, since they didn't have metering like I did. Good times.

I'm not so sure. Tethering was disabled on both of my Windows Phones. (As was group texting on the second phone )

@bb36e said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:
Why the fuck did google implement a feature that only serves to shaft their users? FUCK
Google didn't implement it, the telcos modify the OS on the phones they sell. Never buy your phone from the telco, buy it directly from the manufacturer.

@blakeyrat said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:
I mean maybe it's some perk for being a customer of theirs for SO LONG
I don't mean to doubt your word, but that's really totally unlike any telco I've ever heard of. There's a good reason why they're considered prime examples of businesses that are abusive towards their customers.

Let me introduce you to the word "maybe".

@sockpuppet7 This may have been the case in the past but it appears to be a part of AOSP now:

@bb36e all I see here is the invisible hand finding value and exposing it to the market
-
@bb36e another reason to wipe the Nexus/Pixel phone with the latest official Google firmware as soon as I buy the phone.
-
@bb36e Are you under some illusion that Google and/or the Telcos in any way work for their customers best interest? If so, I'm afraid we've got something to tell you...

Android has better features than iPhone. The iPhone of today has features at about the same quality that Androids had like four years ago.

Speaking of, I just upgraded to Oreo (see Status Thread for that little adventure) and noticed I cannot set custom notification tones per GMail label (and no apps that pop notification sounds use their built-in tones).
What do?

It sucked ass at adoption rate.

@Polygeekery said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:
@bb36e this is not a new thing. Lots of carriers charge extra for tethering.
Part of the reason I choose WinPhone in the beginning. My carrier do charge extra for tethering but never be able to tell whether I tether or not.
-
@pie_flavor Yeah but no.
-
@loopback0 of course not. Apple doesn't have features of Android of 4 years ago...
Apple just invented those same features

I'll say this as someone who likes android and would avoid iPhone whereever possible:
lolnope
I can't think of a single thing any stock, non-rooted Android I've ever used does better than the stock iPhones I've used.
-

Off the top of my head: WiFi analyzer, share contact/files using NFC, let you side-load an app...
Oh, and a headphone jack
-
@Zerosquare said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:
Of course they didn't stop there. I had forgotten about MMS pricing and the "let's put a shortcut to the WAP browser that's easily triggered by accident on the home screen" (which means you'll be paying an extra fee if your contract doesn't cover data usage), but they're pretty good examples of the kind of business practices telecom companies are known for.
One of my first "smart phones" pre android, allowed previewing text messages, but I didn't get charged for reading the message unless I opened it.
So, I just asked people to keep their texts short, and I was never charged for reading a text message.

Apple just invented those same features
That's because Apple is the Thomas Edison company. Actually focused on popularizing and manipulating the market to popularize their tech offerings, and being popularly remembered as inventing things.

Your phone is not supposed to be used as a router. Having an "unlimited" data plan and tethering is like going in an all-you-can-eat restaurante and passing food to your friends under the table.
-
@TimeBandit said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:
Off the top of my head: WiFi analyzer,
Both Android and iOS have apps for that
share contact/files using NFC,
Never done that, honestly. I thought iOS has some sort of "bump" thing for contact sharing?
let you side-load an app...
Need android root for that.
Oh, and a headphone jack
On modern iPhones, yeah, okay, there's that. If you're buying a "good enough" phone instead of "latest", and get an iPhone 6 or 5s, you can jack it.
I'm willing to bet android phones will stop including phone jacks soon enough, because lolApple.
-
@Lorne-Kates said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:

No you don't, it's a normal setting available on most if not all Android devices, rooted or not.

Some have. Same with the screen cutout notch.
-

iOS apps can't show you signal strength, best channel to use, etc. (at least, last time I checked)

Not at all

There is nothing.
Well, the Android phones are better at annoying you with bullshit.
-
@Lorne-Kates something I seriously missed on iOS was the emulators. Nothing beats 10 minutes of Pokémon if I'm stressed.
-
@Lorne-Kates @blakeyrat An iPhone also costs 3 times the price I paid for my old moto g4+, to do about the same stuff.
-
@Lorne-Kates said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:

Windows Phone and Android only. iPhones have this other "airdrop" thing that most people turn off after the first dozen dick pics.
-
@sockpuppet7 Yeah and a pencil can also do "about" the same stuff and it's only a few pennies.
-
@blakeyrat said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:

I can call someone, take pictures, browse the net and run apps on my pencil?
-
@Gąska The iPhuck6s I’m using because my Essential got moistened took several DAYS to figure out my plan allows tethering.
-
@TimeBandit said in Telcos can disable mobile tethering in the USA:

It's called "imagination".
-
@blakeyrat I can't think of a single iPhone feature I'm missing. I see your complains about notifications, but I have disabled for each app that annoyed me.
-
@blakeyrat xaade? Is that you??
-
@sockpuppet7 Ok well I can think of about 20 Windows Phone features I'm missing and I know at least half of those exist in iOS.
-

@blakeyrat So you're better at missing features from expensive phones. I don't think I'm envy of that.

When I first got Windows Phone, it was missing the option to disable screen rotation. They've added it eventually, but they never fixed that the Kids Corner required the same password to unlock screen as regular mode, making it effectively useless for children over 2.
-
@Gąska Ok.

They felt the same about routers to begin with, and used to charge people extra for a router with more ethernet connections, and made it VERY difficult to get an independently bought router to work with their modem.

Your kids age 3 can unlock your phone?
Or multiple user accounts aren't a thing on Windows Phone?
