You know, I actually kinda liked that "futuristic" style that was popular in the early 2000s.
I never knew how to define it, until I saw a picture of the Panasonic Q:

@anonymous234 Is that a receiver with a built-in Gamecube? The hell?

It's a DVD player with a built-in GameCube, actually. It reminds me of my first living room PC, which was built into one of those Shuttle cube cases.

Status: Of course my main UPS would choose a Sunday morning that I have maintenance work to do to crap out, meaning I have to rewire things twice so I have Internet access now, and I can re-install a UPS after Best Buy opens.
Also, holy crap the alarm on that is annoying. Though I suppose it's better than Tesla's battery failure mode...
-
@izzion Why don't you just plug things into the wall? Then buy a better UPS at half the price on Amazon.
"Re-wire" things? What the heck was the UPS plugged into if there were no outlets there?
-
@blakeyrat
I did plug things straight into the wall. But I had to dig out a surge strip for the necessary port count, and lumber behind my desk (which I didn't exactly leave lots of working room behind) to get it plugged in.And generally UPS's fall into the category of "too expensive to ship", though I suppose I should check.
-
A single parking space for a motorcycle costs more over a year than the actual motorcycle :(

Until those last two words, I thought your post would be about package delivery.

Buy a car parking space then? Or is it even more expensive?

@tsaukpaetra Given how little of your last payment went to interest ($15.93), it looks to me as if you are getting close to paying the whole thing off. Plus, your last bill said you've satisfied (paid off) $15k of the $16.5k of the principal. I think you need to call someone at the bank that loaned you the money to clear up the confusion.
That's not the amount of the last payment that went to interest, it's the current outstanding interest. Which might be calculated by days. $15.93 sounds like it'd correspond to about a week and a half's worth of interest on that balance.

Are they trying to do a scan for malware? Checking for open ports is probably a poor way of doing it, but from the browser it's probably the only thing they could do...

@anotherusername said in The Official Status Thread:

The point of my screenshot is that there's no way for a website to know why a websocket failed to connect. So the only thing their port scanner could actually detect would be a websocket handler running on a VNC port that accepts their connection request.
-
@ben_lubar which they might consider to be an indication that the customer's system is compromised.
Isn't it a common scammer tactic to get the target to install VNC so they can "debug" the PC remotely?

Yeah, but how many of those scammers would also be installing a websocket server on a VNC port that accepts connections from random banks?

Surely "Connection Refused" means "this port isn't open at all"? Wouldn't there be some sort of different error if something responded to the connection but it didn't support websockets?

There is a different error, but it is not exposed anywhere except the developer tools for exactly this reason.

Ah.
Thankfully they're better at being a bank than websites as the custom fonts/icons don't load on the front page and logging in also causes these from Firefox:

Allegedly, libvncserver/x11vnc supports websocket connections on the same 5900-range port that it uses for VNC connections. QEMU also starts a websocket server, but it's on a 5700-range port instead of the 5900-range port.

Status: Boss opened the office fridge to get milk out and it made a peculiar sound: crunch-sproing...then the door wouldn't close.
Volunteered myself as suitability qualified in fridge repair (especially as it was holding up my morning coffee). Turns out a plastic stop in the double-articulated hinge had decided it'd had enough of existing and let a spring escape to where it ought not to be.
5 minutes of pounding the piss out of it with a parallel punch I had the, vicious, spring forced out and a mostly working hinge!Department meeting today so I can proudly state my latest achievement as 'ensured coffee delivery SLA wasn't affected by hardware malfunction' :)

A question for those of you in the UK (England, to be more precise):
Is this a thing?
Yes, that's a multi-tier wedding cake made out of pork pies. And if it's a thing, is there anything more English?

Not a wide spread thing. No more so than any other 'novelty' wedding cake anyway.

@magus Why is her head so tiny.
-
@blakeyrat
She washed her hair too hot
-
@blakeyrat I had just been assuming the armor was huge, but even if that's the case, she must look like a stick figure with arms that long!
-
@magus Is it some anime fetish things? Like "all women must be dressed like schoolgirls, have voices so piercing and high that dogs howl, and their heads must be half the size of normal heads!!!"
I was going to make some comment about how her breasts are the size of her head, but then I realized that wasn't because they were abnormally huge, it was because her head is freakishly small.
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Or twice. Twice is allowed too.
-
@pleegwat The eyes are twice the size of normal eyes, or maybe even 3-4x.
-
@blakeyrat I mean, it's Korean, so probably all of the above?
Honestly, the characters in this game can be fairly reasonable-looking, and most of them are. The costumes are often very sexualized, but in a very... equal way.
The characters are gender-locked, which is odd for a game where the characters have no individual story whatsoever, which is about the only thing that would make that make sense.
But honestly, the only good thing about the game is the combat. If there was any other game with this kind of combat that's still an MMO, I'd play that instead. I've tried finding one, and they're all terrible.
