@hardwaregeek I've posted this screenshot here before, but Brady (from the Hello Internet podcast and a bunch of Youtube channels) has so many unread emails that Apple can't even display the number:

@hungrier Whaaa a phone OS that displays the count of unread messages!?!?!?!? What heaven is this.

Only you would happily accept
7...8
as a "count" of unread messages.

Preferably without ads, or confusing permissions screens,
Confusing permissions seems to be the way Android does things. The permission granularity is much, much too coarse. If an app has any involvement with, say, notifications, it not only gets to control its own notifications, but gets completely unfettered control of every notification from every app ever, including any content in the notification and, apparently, including overall control of notifications through do not disturb settings.

Status: Fixed a bug in Vuetify Datatables wherein the last column doesn't look like a real column (and doesn't get considered in the width for sub-expansions) by just finagling in the column as a pseudo-column that uses a flag on the header-definition object to determine if it uses the special column's logic or not.
In other words, turned this:
into this:
Not entirely sure what's going on with that Share button though. That's next! :D

It's in the gmail app, so it disables email notifications for the account that you're controlling (in that screenshot, it's that specific gmail account). Unless your email app is popping calendar notifications (gmail doesn't, and no app I know of does) it won't affect them at all.
You also have OS level controls on notifications on apps, and you have the "turn off all notifications" mode that you're thinking of, but they're entirely unrelated. This setting will disable exactly one thing - your email notifications.Ok, but here's the thing: coming to Android as a person who is not telepathic, how would I know that?
If I assumed it, and assumed wrong, I might end up missing an important "your email app is insecure and needs to be upgraded post-haste or you'll be pwned in minutes" notification. So of course I leave them all on because I can't take the risk.
Even now that you've explained it, how do I know you're correct and not just assuming what it does? Did you look at the source code? How the fuck to Android fans use this OS? I guess they just ALL have telepathy?
I never had any of these problems with Windows Phone. (Or iOS back when I used that ages ago.) Android is just unbelievably crappy.
'Scuse me.
What?
Am I understanding it correctly that you are complaining about a discoverable interface?
Would you rather sit through an hour long tutorial on every facet of the Gmail app?
Windows Phone must sure have been shitty if it's conditioned you to not instinctually know where certain features are likely to reside.

@pie_flavor Battery saver? Pfft. I put it on Extreme power saver green mode thingy with flight mode on with the screen off. Literally the last level of saving power!
Oh. I tend to never use that because Samsung seems to have implemented it so shittily that when I restore it to normal operating state it wipes my launcher configuration.

HOW ABOUT YOU CHECK IT YOURSELF YOU LAZY FUCK!!!
But yes.Maybe because I don't want to have fucking ads all over my phone for it to do some BASIC SHIT that every fucking other phone OS (and every desktop OS since the fucking 90s) has fucking DONE BY DEFAULT.
No app installs ads 'all over your phone'. Some apps display a singular advertisement unobtrusively in a bottom bar; I'm guessing this gets shown while you're configuring the widget.
I mean thanks for finding the fucking app, but if this is the BEST THERE IS, you have to admit it's not much of a response to "wow Android sucks shit". Because this solution, even if it works (and the reviews are full of people saying it's broken), sucks shit.
If the solution works, it still sucks shit? Because of a potential banner ad inside the app window? You know, that thing that 99% of apps have? Why?
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
That's because I haven't noticed any ads over the two minutes I've used it.
Well since Google apps show ads when they say they don't in the app store, maybe this app says it shows ads in the store but then actually doesn't. It's like wacky reverso-land every day when you're using an Android phone!
This has been explained to you over and over and over again. When an app in the store has the 'contains ads' tag on it, it means that shows third-party ads. Apps are not required to disclose that they tell you about things you can do with the app, such as Google Photos reminding you it has a printing/framing function. If you cannot remember something after being told three times, perhaps it is you that is the problem and not that which you were told.

All the reviews say it doesn't work. Plus even when it does work, it only works with a specific "launcher" app I guess? Why is that even a thing in the Android world?
As usual, blakeyrat assuming that because he doesn't have use for something, nobody does. People like launcher customization. If you don't want to install your own launcher, don't. Doesn't mean nobody else wants to.

@gąska You should see the one with my full name, it's even more broken. The letters are still cut-off but it only draws the first 4 of them, when my name is 11 characters long.
Does the permissions system conflate "can access notifications" with "can turn on Do Not Disturb" mode on your machine, too? Or is that just a special gem unique to my phone specifically?
It's general notification-drawer stuff. They're alerting you that access to notifications means it can push the button on the do not disturb notification, not that it has access to the do not disturb manager.

Oh and in this whole discussion I completely forgot the OTHER thing that makes my Android phone useless garbage: even once you get the badges working (for some value of working), there's no way to get the email app to sort unread messages first. Even though every other phone OS in the world does that by default. So you can't just click the icon and SEE the 3 unread messages.
You could, however, type
is:unread
into the search bar.

@tsaukpaetra How about I use email the way I want, and you leave me alone? How about that alternative?
The lack of self-awareness here is, well, I'd say it's startling but at this point it really isn't.

False. An app needs no permissions in order to show you notifications, or to manage its own. It needs permission to manage other apps' notifications.

@stillwater When I was in the Boy Scouts the thing was to send the newbies around asking for a left handed smoke shifter.
When some came around our camp we gave them an old blower motor. We were later treated to the sight of the scoutmaster two camps over scratching his head looking at what his scouts brought back.

After that, the vertical alignment of the text in the AUTO-MANAGE button and the Search control next to it would really set off my CDO, just as the title “Virtual Machines” doesn't align nicely with KILL and CREATE on the other end of that row. I'm guessing that Search is too low and the buttons are slightly too tall…
Since they bother me, they can now bother you as well!

Status: I fucking hate variable interest rate loans. They never go in the direction that's good for me...
Now, I may be a dummy stupid head for using loans to cover 94 percent of my college tuition, but something seems wrong here.
My last billing statement:
So, I've already paid more than the original loan was worth. Sure, that's to be expected.
But wait a minute, I still owe $13k?!?!? What the fuck!??! Goddammit NO!
Then they send me a "We've changed your payment schedule lol" message:
Fuck you, I'm not spending another $18k in 11 years, screw you!
This shit is going away in two months, credit score be damned...
-
@tsaukpaetra Given how little of your last payment went to interest ($15.93), it looks to me as if you are getting close to paying the whole thing off. Plus, your last bill said you've satisfied (paid off) $15k of the $16.5k of the principal. I think you need to call someone at the bank that loaned you the money to clear up the confusion.

I get to hear that every day when one of the groups has their standup. So the speaker has to be loud enough for the whole group to hear. Fucking open spaces. If I ever start interviewing, open space will be a good reason to say "thank you, let's not waste our time" as I walk in for an interview.

Yeah; he screamed at me for being rich buying Bitcoin when the price was $140ish without ever bothering to ask how much Bitcoin I bought. (Hint: I'm not rich.)
Even if I had been rich, I'm not sure why he was so angry about it.

Yup. Searching for lucas1 topics and this was on top. He just goes straight into I'm-angry-at-people mode right away. Hilarious thread nonetheless. I'm waiting for the follow up thread where he apologizes like he always does once he's sober.

My dad made (long before such things were readily available at the dollar store) a small, battery-powered fan. It's been a few decades, but I think he labeled it "left-handed smoke shifter" on one side and "right-handed smoke shifter" on the other, so you could use it with either hand.
