EDIT:

Working at Amazon sound about as pleasant as licking the asshole of someone with explosive diarrhea.

So I create a new post and by default I'm "not watching". Like fucking really? Intuitive.Very.

When quizzed days later, those with perfect scores earn a virtual award proclaiming, “I’m Peculiar” — the company’s proud phrase for overturning workplace conventions.

So whenever you post something by default you do not care about the replies to the post? I don't even..
-
@stillwater no - when I create topic, it's automatically set to "watching".

How is this not working for me? And I don't even know the settings menu enough to tinker with such things.
-
@stillwater It's probably the checkbox labeled "Watch topics you create".
Re: Amazon, I'd been hearing similar things before these articles from 2015. The warehouses have a pretty bad reputation as well.

Found it. Not sure how or why it is unchecked.
Oh as for as Amazon goes I was completely unaware of this being a company culture, around here these parts working in amazon is considered as the holy Grail. People buy cracking the coding interview by the truckloads to prepare for Amazon.
-
Seems like a fun place to work.
-
I would have gone meh if this was in China or India. I thought there would be laws that prevent these kinda things from happening. Well now we know :/
-
@stillwater the funniest thing is, there are laws to prevent this.
-
@gąska what laws would those be?
-
@pie_flavor the laws prohibiting mobbing, workplace bullying and psychological abuse.
-
@gąska Poland's fuckin' weird.
-
@pie_flavor are you saying psychological abuse is legal in your country?
-
@gąska No, but if workplace practices like these qualify, then that's pretty stupid.
-
@pie_flavor why? Do you think it's not psychological abuse to create work environment that frequently brings everybody to mental breakdown?

Ha! The "world" is just waking up - I've only had my first cup of coffee! (I'd still be sleeping, but 4month old puppies have other ideas - that can't be ignored!)

It was ~9am local time when I posted that.

@polygeekery yeah, once again I messed up in which direction timezones go.

One of my best friends is a Kiwi and when someone asks him what time it is in New Zealand he says (IIRC) "They are 7 hours behind us, but it's tomorrow there". For him that is easier than "They are 17 hours ahead of us".
I may have fucked that up. Maybe it is "They are 7 hours ahead of us, but it's yesterday there". Time zones screw me up.
-
Thread derailed from Amazon to Time zone fuckery in no time. Sweet!

That's one of the fundamentals that the front page is built on!

As a tech worker in the Seattle area, let me just say:
HAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHHHAHHA
No Amazon has a fucking terrible reputation. Godawful.
-
@polygeekery I chatted with a bunch of people from NZ for years. Then it was either "3 hours behind and a day ahead", or "5 hours behind and a day ahead". The actual separation was 4 hours, but both countries had daylight saving time and since they're in the southern hemisphere their DST goes the other direction. But that was before the US switched the DST rules, so now it'd be different.

Yup. Got it already. Thanks.

Forward, or from west to east... whichever's easier to remember.
Oh, you meant which direction the time zones' time offsets go? Well it follows directly from the above...
-
@anotherusername I knew which direction time zones work until I read your post, and again 5 minutes after I decided forgetting what I just read, so I'm gonna rate that post as "unhelpful". ;)

No, the first way would be correct. Going east, the time advances an hour with each time zone you cross (ignoring things such as DST observation and half-hour time zones). Since the earth rotates from west to east, going east in the morning means going toward the sun (i.e. toward noon), and going east in the afternoon means going away from it (i.e. toward midnight). Then, still going east, when you cross the international date line, you subtract 24 hours from your clock. Going west, it's the opposite. You'd cross the international date line getting to New Zealand by leaving... darn near anywhere in the world (the international date line is just east of NZ)... going west (not east).

That was the effect I was aiming for, so...

I would say you lose an hour.

Yeah, I meant the clock gains an hour, forgetting that people insist on measuring such things by how much of the day they have left. It was ambiguous... I've edited it to hopefully make it clearer.

@polygeekery Or just enter whatever time you want in http://everytimezone.com/

@gąska said in I had nooo idea. Holy shit!:
@pie_flavor why? Do you think it's not psychological abuse to create work environment that frequently brings everybody to mental breakdown?
no I do not. I would believe it was psychological abuse to create a work environment that intends to bring a specific person or group of people to mental breakdown, but only if you actually meant the literal definition of mental breakdown instead of simply 'no this is too hard'.
If you're good enough to work at Amazon, you're good enough to work elsewhere. If you can't handle the work environment, find another job!
-
@blakeyrat The separation is 19-21 hours. You could maybe say 20, but that's only ever for a couple weeks.
-
@gąska said in I had nooo idea. Holy shit!:

no I do not. I would believe it was psychological abuse to create a work environment that intends to bring a specific person or group of people to mental breakdown, but only if you actually meant the literal definition of mental breakdown instead of simply 'no this is too hard'.
This definition would exclude most parental abuse.
-
@gąska Well, no it wouldn't. I'm talking about work environments here.
-
@pie_flavor we all know you make up your own definitions of words to support whatever your point is

I can see some of the appeal. This is like the corporate equivalent of Navy SEAL training or the sort of life that 20 year old Olympic medalists seem to live.

So you think there should be a different set of laws for abuse of family members and for abuse of employees?

Absolutely. The relationship is completely different, as are the expected duties of care.
