TIL: 30TB = "millions" of webpages
Also, I love the use of quotation marks on "millions". Who are you quoting? Why did you feel the need to use quotation marks? Do you even know what you're "doing"?
It's probably a quotation.
See, what I think happened is, someone googled "average size of webpage"...
...so they divided 30 TB by 1935 KB, and came up with a number like 16.6 million. Then they proudly announced that 30 TB was equivalent to "millions" of webpages. And CBC News quoted them on it.
It's basically the same thing your camera / camera app does when it tells you how many more photos can fit in its storage, or what MP3 player manufacturers do when telling you how many MP3s can fit on this 32 GB device.

@rhywden It looks like that was for Burger King & DHL though:
@obeselymorbid just liked this post and it got me wondering how they were doing.
Apparently they went back to their old supplier for 1/3d of their restaurants back in March:

@blakeyrat I mean I personally would be totally happy with synthetic weirdness everywhere. I don't need nature to feel like a human.
-
Thanks FDA, I feel safer already.
-
@dragoon So, why do they use a picture of something they specifically call out as not affected?
-
Because we all know that the FDA is really trying to ban coffee and this is just phase 1.
-
@dragoon
Your tinfoil hat is
-
@dragoon Well, caffeine is a poison. It's just that it's a poison that we metabolise fairly effectively when it is in its actual toxic form, so we don't usually have a problem with it. In bulk though? The liver will become overwhelmed and then we'll be in real trouble.
One good coffee is enough to set me up for hours. I've no idea why anyone would want the bulk product except for making very dodgy mixes…

This is the first step in replacing it with covfefe

If you make your own drinks. Specifically, I know some people who brew beer with caffeine added and that is how they buy it.

From the article:
Between 10 and 14 grams of caffeine is considered life-threatening, according to the FDA’s guidelines, though people can have an irregular or rapid heart rate and seizures after taking just a gram. The amount of concentrated caffeine that’s considered safe at a time—200 milligrams—is very, very small. It works out to be less than one-tenth of a teaspoon of the powdered form or a little more than two teaspoons of liquid caffeine. Good luck measuring that out properly at home.
For the record: your average cup of coffee is likely about 40 milligram so it is ridiculously easy to overdose the purified stuff.

They're banning sales direct-to-customer, presumably businesses can still get it via. B2B channels.

[One short search later…] My usual morning brew seems to be about 230mg; I knew I felt good afterwards but only wanted one…

Water is poisonous in a high enough dose. And not just in California. Though it probably causes cancer in California.
-
@pleegwat The State of California has found that the state of California causes cancer.

You should look up how much caffeine there is in a large cup.

AMD issues response to Nvidia's anti-consumer practices (not named by name). Pewpew!
https://gaming.radeon.com/en/radeon-a-gamers-choice/
Over the coming weeks, you can expect to see our add-in board partners launch new brands that carry an AMD Radeon product. AMD is pledging to reignite this freedom of choice when gamers choose an AMD Radeon RX graphics card. These brands will share the same values of openness, innovation, and inclusivity that most gamers take to heart. The freedom to tell others in the industry that they won’t be boxed in to choosing proprietary solutions that come bundled with “gamer taxes” just to enjoy great experiences they should rightfully have access to. The freedom to support a brand that actively works to advance the art and science of PC gaming while expanding its reach.

Because a picture of bulk caffeine might look a bit too much like something else:

“Churn” might be a better word, just like what it does to your stomach if you haven't eaten anything for a while…

Given the kerning on the front page post summary, I saw that as "Chum" and wondered what SpongeBob was doing in the News thread...

I did something like that when in university. One of those contained caffeine tablets, glucose and vitamin C powder to taste, 6 of the tablets to a liter. The "recipe" got passed on until someone misheard the "6" for a "60". Reportedly¹ he didn't sleep for 48 hours and was scared of being about to have a heart attack for most of that time.
¹ Caffeine is supposed to have a serum half-life of about 6h so I'm not so sure about that, but 24 would have sounded scary enough

48 hours is 8 half-lives, so about 0.4% was still active at that point if the half-life was 6 hours. That may be enough (if the initial dose was high enough) to cause issues. Plus the after-effects may take a significant time to settle down.

@bb36e So will it be back two years ago, or in the distant future?

Good news on its own, but also
There are also a few security updates included in the new build as well like ‘Site Isolation,’ which helps reduce the risk of spectre attacks.

@tsaukpaetra You reuse your planned maintenance HTML from your backup folder, then forget to edit all the dates?

@jbert Also, I'm pretty sure they didn't plan an outage to happen on the busiest day of the year, the one everybody is legally required to pay by midnight of. Even the IRS isn't that incompetent; if there's one thing they do well, it's extracting money from people.

It's actually a ploy to get even more money from late fees or other "you didn't pay on time" charges.
-
@tsaukpaetra They extended the deadline by a day because of the outage.

After the healthcare.gov fiasco, I'm not so sure about that.

Somehow he hasn't been found yet, can't be that many people with crossbow bolts in them going to A&E.
One of those tiny crossbows looks like fun. I shot an arrow from a compound bow through a substantial door once so I can believe even a little thing could have some serious power.
