Yeah, it's really strange because most idiots prefer dicsource.

Discourse has a deal-breaker that no other forum software is afflicted by...
Jeff.
-
@doctorjones Used it for two years without interacting with him.
-
@pie_flavor I would tell you to go and read some of our run ins with him over at meta, but he literally deletes every thread that's he's thrown a tantrum in.
Cue the "I'm tired of hearing about this" meme
-
@doctorjones I guess I just have your word for it, since he maintains that he just couldn't handle the extreme negativity.
-
@pie_flavor that's ironic, seeing as most of it came from him. We were there in good faith, as evidenced by the numerous "bug report" badges, and other things we earned over there, not to mention the pull requests made by the community.
The guy is just a dick.

Presumably on forms which care far less than we do about customizing, tweaking, and stress testing it (although most of the time, we do that without even trying -- how many topics and posts do those other forum have?), and only report bugs when they're relatively obvious and can't easily be worked around.

And by extreme negativity you mean brutally honest feedback that challenged his simplistic world view you might be right.

No, you have to take Jeff's word for it.
We have forum posts that haven't been deleted that you can read.

@lorne-kates If you did, you'd have linked them, wouldn't you?

Oh wow, I thought this had been deleted because I couldn't find it the last time I searched, but it was there in my browser history.
Quoted below for convenience.

No. We have been infiltrated by a DiscoDev who is trying to convince us it isn't shit. We are just recapping.

So-- yeah. We did link them.

I'm pretty sure Citizen Cave would take that as an invitation.
Though, based on the Billy Bush recording, the same could be said for 'being a female human being with a pulse'. And I'm not convinced that a lack of any one of those conditions would be a deal breaker.
But then, the same is true for any politician, regardless of politics, marital status, age, sex, or gender.

I try to remain at arms length with regards to discussions about NodeBB and Discourse, but one thing I want to point out is that over the years, there have been numerous topics about NodeBB on meta.d, and vice versa.
We keep every single topic about Discourse on community.nodebb.org, even if inflammatory, because it more often than not spawns discussion about some failing of NodeBB that Discourse does well, and that we should probably address it sooner rather than later. If it means it caused somebody to ditch NodeBB for Discourse, then so be it -- they made an informed decision.
Conversely, to my knowledge, there are very few backlinks to NodeBB on meta.d. Any time a new topic comes up, it is deleted fairly quickly.

I see more reason for that to need Javascript than for this forum.
You don't need JavaScript for this forum.
Yes, but it does need a certain level of HTML compliance to really work properly. Bad things happen when CSS doesn't work...

I've really wanted a reason to join the ban list, maybe I might try this sometime...
Edit: Oh shit, I earned a badge for... not logging in for a while?
Ok, made a topic:
Lets see how long it lasts, and if I get constructive, helpful, useful, or even thought-out feedback....

There is a new site setting log personal messages views to log Admin PM views for other users/groups in staff action logs. The setting is disabled by default.
You shouldn't be able to disable that in the first place!!!

Well, after eight hours we have a passive-aggressive remark from Jeff himself and a reasonable discourse with @merefield. So far so good. The other forum mentions were silently ignored. Maybe I should have used more active voice and brought them up first?
-
@tsaukpaetra said in Fight about discourse here:

Well he directly answers one of your questions:
Or does someone know a good host I can use for $5 or less that can adequately run Discourse?
Why do you need $20/month? A suitable Digital Ocean droplet is now $5/monthAnd I am not sure what you are fishing for here, you will get:
- cheap hosting suggestions
- tales from people who ran forums on 0.5GB RAM and whether it worked or not
- tales from people who ran forums on different amounts of RAM
What you should get, but it is hard to put politely:
- Well install it and see what happens
Do you actually have a youtube channel? :P
-
@adynathos said in Fight about discourse here:

Technically I believe anyone who has a Google plus account inherently has a channel, yes. Whether or not it's a Channel channel,
-
@tsaukpaetra said in Fight about discourse here:

You mean there are more channels dedicated to a stupid stretch of water separating mainland EU from Brexit?
-

I was expecting something more like "why are you trying to run Discourse on unsupported hardware? Get out!"
Because of course, if I install on something with that low spec and come to ask why it is slow that's the kind of response I'll get, no?
Anyways, scheduling an in-good-faith attempt for this weekend. Problem is, where will I get some starter content to represent the kind of post coverage such a site will likely generate?
-
@tsaukpaetra /r/subredditsimulator?
-
@adynathos said in Fight about discourse here:

When they did the stupid Google+ thing, anybody who logged into YouTube or Gmail or Google Reader or whatever got a YouTube channel whether or not they wanted one. I have like 5 of the damned things.
-
@Tsaukpaetra of course, now I'll be made a liar because that topic won't be deleted :smiling_face_with_open_mouth:
To answer your question in that topic -- NodeBB does not require swap. However, you probably might want it anyway just in case the OOM killer decides to start shooting things. Usually Mongo takes the bullet though.
That said -- running
npm install
will trigger the OOM killer on a fresh install on an old $5 droplet (that's 512mb, no swap). The newer $5 droplets have double the RAM and should be perfectly fine.
-
@julianlam said in Fight about discourse here:

Sigh remember the good old days when 64mb was an enterprise-class machine qualifier?
By $deity, Node, (not just NodeBB ) how do you fill up more than half a gig of RAM with dependency information? WTH!
-
@tsaukpaetra we use webpack at work now, for something like 4 or 5 utility libraries and Handlebars.
Last time I saw the count of built modules, it was around 500. It might count compiling our templates though. In that case knock about 100 off of that.
Modern JS is pure madness.

AN OVERUSED, OUTDATED MEMEoh, nevermind...
-
@tsaukpaetra It's npm... I have a feeling when it calculates its dependency tree, it stores all of it (and the files too I suppose) in active memory, and only when the tree has been completely built, will it blurt it all out into
node_modules/
The minute yarn allows
yarn publish
, I'm out of the npm ecosystem.
