Robots are being used to shoo away homeless people in San Francisco

edit: Sensationalized report is sensationalized:
“Contrary to sensationalized reports, Knightscope was not brought in to clear the area around the SF SPCA of homeless individuals. Knightscope was deployed, however, to serve and protect the SPCA,” A spokesperson for Knightscope told Quartz. “The SCPA has the right to protect its property, employees and visitors, and Knightscope is dedicated to helping them achieve this goal. The SPCA has reported fewer car break-ins and overall improved safety and quality of the surrounding area.”

This seems like it would break the first law of robotics.

@sockpuppet7 I've seen those things before! They patrol a mall I use.
-
@sockpuppet7 SCPA or SPCA? "We can't get the name of our own organization right, but trust us on this one."

I know they patrol Stanford Mall, or used to; I haven't been there for a few months. Also, there is a Public Storage right next door to Knightscope's office/factory/whatever they do there; I once had stuff stored at that Public Storage. Finally, I used to frequent a parking lot they used to patrol; when driving through the parking lot, they sometimes exhibited the unpleasant behavior of "getting out of the path of your car" by crossing in front of you rather suddenly.

@hardwaregeek That's so cool. I wish I could see toys like these here, but those bots would be stolen for scrap metal the first week they operated here, and our labor is still cheaper than them.

last one i saw was in several pieces after it did that to an H3 that couldn't see it because the suspension was jacked so high that the driver couldn't see a 6' tall person over the hood..... and for all that i think it did more damage to the H3.
in both pieces broken into and dollar value damage done

San Francisco is clamping down on the number of sidewalk delivery robots in the city.

What Would Happen if North Korea Hit San Francisco with a Nuclear Missile?
Well for one I would have to actually be impressed. To date their launch vehicles have been respectably unreliable and inaugurate.
If they hit SciFi they would have been aiming for suaveness or something.

Isn't it hard to hit a genre (or other abstract concept) with a nuclear missile? Not that I'd mind hitting some genres with nukes...

... Excuse me. Apparently the update to Android 8.1.0 yesterday re-enabled auto-correct. I need to disable that once more.

Compared to "highbrow literature," those schlocky messes are priceless works of art. Then again, I read for fun--turgid, boring, "check all the boxes of social awareness" literature is not my style.
But I'll compromise. Nuke them both.

Hipsters would panic as all Starbucks shops are wiped out and they have no place to go with their Macbooks.

No great loss, IMHO. I would not be happy, though, because I'm downwind. Love that fallout.
