Thank you, Word, I do know the difference between affect and effect but apparently you don't.
(Yes, I do use the proofer's confusion as an indication that I need to simplify my language there.)

Yeah, my guess is that it thinks you're verbing effect in an unusual way?

Effect is a verb, and I'm using it correctly in that sentence. I'm sure I can rephrase though (just trying to bang the last pages of this shit out before I start editing).

Yeah, hence my supposition of "unusual". ;)

I seem to have run into my first scammer on Amazon Marketplace.
Ordered items of model X from seller claiming to be supplier V, located in Tennessee. Received box containing inferior model Y and a packing slip for a different Amazon Marketplace order for model Y, ordered the same day and shipped from V to an office in Colorado.
Items marked as "not returnable due to special packaging required".
So now I have to spend my time going through Amazon's returns/dispute procedure.

I've had it on me for I think six years now. I'll be fine.
-
Okay, despite the packing slip it was shipped directly from V to me. I now suspect what happened was that V put my shipping label on the Colorado person's order.

Status: trying ChromeOS courtesy of ArnoldTheBat.
It's not bad. Thanks to Chrome being the only thing running I don't have to worry about running out of memory for other apps.
Somehow this seems to translate to lower memory usage... :/
Imma switch back to Windows, grab my session and import it back here and see if that's the truth...

Ok, 42 tabs (approximately)
Huh, maybe it's slightly worse in memory performance? But I guess it wouldn't matter...

@weng Yeah but whenever I play a hidden object game, they insist a "trencher" is a wooden plate, and not one of these:
Of course they're all made in Communist Europestan.

https://i.imgur.com/a84rHmE.pngNope, I went straight to images from https://www.google.com/imghp like I always do when I want a picture of something.
No, if it was really all that more common I would have seen results from pinterest, imgur, instagram and whatever, showing off their "trencher" (most often with food of course, because why post a trencher by itself?).

It might depend on what type of removable storage it thinks it is. I've got a ton connected, and several of them show up.

In today's gaming world, that's probably a few models and skins for things.
Seriously, we once had 32 Gb of "content" that consisted mainly of "4k" resolution textures. About 30 Mb of that was maps, and slightly over 20 Mb was our programming (stuff not provided by Unreal Engine).

Keep in mind that XCOM takes place from the camera angle that Civilization takes place from most of the time, so graphical fidelity isn't really a huge selling point for new content. Plus the fact that Long War 2 has a pretty big feature list. I'm going to try to disable the panic overhaul since changing "unit does stupid thing" to "unit always does nothing" is basically the removal of a feature, but apart from that everything seems cool.
I'm planning on setting up a character pool containing anyone with an account on the front page or in trust level 3 before I start my Long War 2 playthrough.
Anyone who isn't in TL3 want to join the character pool? Anyone want to request things about their character? (If not, I'll probably just use random characters and just name them after TDWTFers.) Should I add some well-known people outside the TDWTF community like Tarn Adams, Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, and Bill Gates?

Status: Dad's laptop has only 400 Mb free on the system disk. So I go and see what's going on.
First,
C:\Windows\Installer
is taking up 26 Gb.
Then, he has (apparently) a backup of his phone, which contains things like 1-minute clips taking up 1 Gb of space each.Dad, you can't do that sir. Use this shiny shortcut I made (and showed you how to use) to stuff your stuff on the network drive!
The fun thing is, this would all have been mitigated if his computer was on the domain since all user folders get redirected there automatically, but his computer is Windows Home and obviously can't do that.
Urhghghg!!!

Condo has:
- 20 non-dimmable bulbs in Edison base (not counting outdoor fixtures-- too cold to go out and check)
- 4 dimmable bulbs in Edison base
- 6 bulbs in weird-ass E12 candelabra base
- 3 halogen bulbs in weird-ass GU10 base
- 2 of those huge-ass bulbs that go into bathroom fans (which I don't even want, I need to see if I can replace them with just a grate. Possibly BR40 size?)
- Unknown bulb above shower (very dim, and the plastic cover under it is basically covered in dead bugs. So I didn't open it because gross)
Today I've replaced every single Edison base with an LED, and ordered replacement bulbs for the rest. Fuck this place and it's weird-ass light fixtures, I'm doing the legwork now to guarantee I don't have to buy lightbulbs for the next 5+ years.
And yes I threw away plenty of perfectly good bulbs in the process. Suck it.
Except those fucking bathroom bulbs, I have no idea what I'm going to do with those. Like I said might just remove the bulb and figure out how to mount a tasteful grate so the fan still works. It looks like they do make LED BR40 size, so... who knows.
-
@blakeyrat BTW one single 3-bulb fixture in the master bathroom had 3 competely different bulbs in it:
- 1 Phillips 60-watt frosted LED bulb
- 1 60-watt frosted incandescent
- 1 40-watt clear glass incandescent
WTF previous owners. I mean given I'm a little OCD about making sure each fixture has the same bulbs, but you'd think they'd at least match up the BRIGHTNESS. (Or put the dimmer 40-watt in the center so it's balanced. It was on the right.)
The weird-ass candlebra has 1 Phillips LED and 2 clear incandescents in it also, making me wonder: where do you even BUY a single LED bulb and not at least a 2-pack?!
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

We're on that path in my house. The Large bathroom has a three-post fixture that has two fluorescent "warm glow" bulbs. The third was flickering (I blame the
mouserat ) but my father believes it was just the bulb going bad. Fair enough.Except he replaced it with a brighter "cool blue" fluorescent light.
The light still flickers, and now since it's brighter than the other two it's much more noticeable...
-
Look at this fucking eyesore. The metal housing is 8.5"x8.5", you think Home Depot or someone sells a generic white plastic grating that's about 10"x10" and maybe .75" deep? I could just glue/caulk/whatever it on top of that thing and ignore the light socket in it forever.
EDIT: new exhaust fans are actually pretty cheap and the ducting is obviously already in place, I wonder what it would cost labor-wise to get these fans replaced altogether...

Status: Trying to wrangle the Rust plugin for IntelliJ. The shininess has worn off of VS Code, and I've had it up to here with the language analysis giving errors that don't apply anymore, files needing to be saved before they can be analyzed, quick documentation being unable to show generics, etc. So I'm trying the IntelliJ plugin, because people have told me that it works like a dream. Installed it. The most basic fucking feature of a language plugin after syntax highlighting, autocompletion, does not work. Documentation says they have amazing autocompletion and it should work if you've configured your toolchain correctly. Now i'm trying to figure out what the hell I've configured wrong. Meanwhile, I'm asking the Rust IRC, and the general advice is 'have you tried the VS Code plugin? it's pretty great'. I tell them my gripes with the plugin, and they're like 'oh yeah you get used to that'. It's like talking to Eclipse users.

No, but things change over time. Unless Java really has been primarily just a string of security updates since forever...

Regarding light bulbs, my shop has a bunch of stupidhuge 60w (not equivalent,. ACTUALLY 60w) CFL bulbs on the celling. They put out a good 3500 lumens each once they're warmed up, but eh. They aren't bright enough. I'll replace them with LED panels when they start failing. I can't even find these suckers for sale anywhere if I did want to replace them in kind.
I went out yesterday to film some more futzing around and noticed that the lighting right where I have the studio set up right now is WAY wrong. Dark, lots of crisp shadow, wrong color.
I look up. My idiot father put a much dimmer directional LED floodlamp in the socket.
As an experiment.
So I had to find where he stashed the damn good bulb, get the ladder, and go for a 15ft climb. For no fucking reason.
Seriously old man. MY shop. GTFO. Stop helping.
