🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

@Boner I wanted to make a "she's kind of cute, is she single" joke, but I don't have it in me. It's just tragic. She's going to have to live with what she's done. She's a young adult single mother of two facing a manslaughter charge too. Damn.
-
@zecc I'm almost tempted to say the man's a Darwin Award candidate, as it was his idea to face a Desert Eagle .50 protected by just a book. Thing is, from what I've read, sounds like he's already fathered a child, so the removal of his genes from the pool has come a bit too late.

That's the kid I was referring to. Unless there's another that I forgot about.

They have a 3 year old daughter. The girlfriend is 19 now. They have been in a relationship for 6 years.
That's about all the trivia that I still remember.

Allow me to give you the CliffNotes version:
- Dude wanted more YouTube hits
- Dude came up with a dumb idea involving a .50 calibre pistol and a book
- Dude convinced wife the idea wasn't dumb
- Dude is now dead
- Wife is being charged with manslaughter
-
If I ever design a programming language, it's going to have a
if-else-fuckit
construct. Liketry-catch-finally
, but forif
s.
-
@onyx That is a brillant idea
-
@raceprouk so, reading between the lines...
- guy was too stupid to test the gun on a similar book without a fleshy meatbag behind it
- wife was either too stupid or too weak to say "no, that's a fucking ridiculous idea and I'm not doing it. Jesus christ, man we've got a baby on the way, what happens if the book isn't strong enough or I miss?"
-
@jaloopa said in 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

Guy showed the girl another book with an entry hole and no exit hole in it.
The article didn't elaborate on the specifics of the books involved and whether the same gun was used before.

From the BBC article about the same:
County Attorney James Brue described the book as a hardcover encyclopaedia, and said the weapon used was a .50-calibre Desert Eagle handgun.
It doesn't say anything about the test beforehand though.

Yeah, kinda. Definitively a fit for the bad ideas thread. And for the poorly planned and executed bad ideas thread.
That said, I do kinda hope they drop the charges (assuming the story checks out). Bad enough situation as it is, no need to make it even worse.

I didn't seriously expect it to be there.

Yeah, this seems like the sort of situation where she's not going to do it again so rehabilitation/protecting the public isn't an issue, and the knowledge that she killed her husband is worse than the punishment she'll get from any jail sentence

I don't think she'll escape sentence completely, but I can see it being a suspended sentence on compassionate grounds.

I was having much difficulty determining what the picture was. After careful consideration, I think you're connecting together a USB TV tuner to a keyboard-to-usb adapter of some sort?

e-cig, which uses USB for charging, connected to a USB-to-PS2 adapter.

I think PS/2 was very low current.

I didn't dare to try actually, for that exact reason. Too afraid of frying the MoBo if the current limiting isn't implemented properly on it.
-
@onyx Should have done that for science and profit... of the e-cig manufacturer when you buy a replacement.

For bonus irony, find a PS/2 to USB adapter in the opposite direction and then find a cigarette lighter to USB adapter and put it in a car.

Flagged for off-topic.
I think Python has it
Yes, but it doesn't work the way you think it does:
Python 3.6.0 (v3.6.0:41df79263a11, Dec 23 2016, 08:06:12) [MSC v.1900 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> for i in range(5): ... print(i) ... else: ... print("Wait, what?") ... 0 1 2 3 4 Wait, what? >>>
...and back on topic.

No, it works exactly the way I think it does. If I don't
break
from the loop, it runs theelse
clause. That'd be super useful in stuff likebool found = false;
-
@ben_lubar Yeah, I tend to duplicate the end-of-loop condition which always seems like smell. But not as smelly as
goto
s (replacing thebreak
s)
-
@pleegwat Another type of
foreach...else
I ran into in a templating language years ago included theelse
block if the set theforeach
iterated over was empty.
-
Okay then. I thought you thought it would run the else block iff the collection was empty.
I can see the reasoning behind either implementation. Personally I'd favor the one I just mentioned. The ambiguity is a problem.
