Oh.... Yeah that's not good. Hopefully it's just a spare bolt replacement.

Status: WTF could possibly be filling my NAS via TFTP?
-
@tsaukpaetra nope. Pipe rusted off. And the next weldable piece of pipe is... Well. Nowhere, really. The spring flange is intact enough that one could build a whole new catback exhaust. Which, for a car this old, will have to be custom. In one day. During which I have to work. So first thing in the morning I'm calling every shop near work.

@tsaukpaetra That last one should search

@tsaukpaetra I guess Microsoft considers the code names (anniversary update, creators' update) to be strictly "promotional material" and doesn't want to actually put them in the product?
Regardless, the numbers are there for advanced users and debugging. The only thing they want common users to know is "update about to install, be ready to wait a while".

Status: On Friday I get contacted by someone wanting a quote on a job. I ask them what time will work for them.
"Anytime between 3 and 6 on Monday would work for us."
I reply to the email and tell them I will be there at 3, as I have to leave myself some time to look over everything and still have time to go pick up the kids from school and daycare. Their reply:
"This is $NAME from $BUSINESS we do close at 4 o'clock I don't think it will take you too long to see what you got to see if you could be a little bit earlier that would be better. But if not that's OK we will see you today"
Uhmmmmm, man?
Also, every reply that they send is a new email where the first part of their reply is in the subject line.

This is the only one available which is:
- Road legal (i.e. not a racecar)
- Has cargo space
- Has sufficient seating

Exhaust shop in the ghetto is cheaper.
They also did what appears to be a fine quality custom job in literally 1 hour with $80 in shelf parts whereas the chain joints wanted at least 2 days notice so they could order a preassembled kit.

Password policy: Must be alphanumeric (letters and numbers only, no symbols)
Oh come on people. ??? We're a fucking IT company. We should know better. On the plus side, it let me reuse a password. On the minus side, when I tried to set my mac to the same password, it said no - can't be one of the last 3 passwords. Guess my machine and LDAP passwords will be different now... (Never had an issue on WIndows, we'll see how the Mac plays out...)

I keep forgetting JDK installers have the unbelievably infuriating habit of being an EXE that extracts another EXE (about 100 KB smaller) to the Temp folder and then tries to run that EXE. Fuck Oracle in its stupid starhole.
-
@heterodox Did that cause a problem? I've installed JDK on Windows 10 recently and it installed without any issue.
-

except the issue that you now have JDK on your machine

Can't execute files from Temp folders on production servers. Had to nab the real executable on a T&D box and send it over.

Why does it seem unreasonable to you that production servers wouldn't have outbound access to the Internet? Why would they?

why would you install Java on them, ESPECIALLY the JDK
the JRE, sure, i could see that if you absolutely had to, but the JDK? why?

@cartman82 I never even turned it on. Apparently it's just a default thing for Visual Studio now.
Still, it's good at detecting "missing semicolon" which is legit helpful.
I'm more opposed to the very concept of "no extraneous parens". Like, that rule might as well read, "we want your complicated math to be difficult to understand!"

That's not the only bullshit rule that chaffed me. Especially since some of these hipster boilerplates I use tend to enable EVERYTHING.

Because it's a... Java... application server? And Java application servers compile JSPs and the like?
Believe me, this is not an uncommon use case. Even Oracle Database client has a JDK in it. I don't think I've ever seen a JRE installed on a server as opposed to a JDK.
On a side note, a JDK's jar command is also useful for extracting zip files much, much more quickly than Windows Explorer can do it, and it handles long path names.

It's not just Java: a modern ASP.NET app can be deployed with the Roslyn compiler.

Why do you think I stopped drinking a few years ago? If I drank every time my job made me want to drink, I'd be dead by now.

If you did drink, then you'd be dead, so you wouldn't have to do your job, so it wouldn't make you drink.
So, what's the downside ?
