@polygeekery AFAIR you get the wholesale value for every unit of energy you pour back in. And the utilities bill you retail price.
Wholesale price is heavily dependent on the time of the day and the ISO your utility belongs to.
Also, for houses a big part of this depends on how does you plan nets the consumption/generation.
I've seen places where it's netted on a daily base, so solar panels can get you even. Other places net by hour or even every fifteen minutes.TL;DR it's a complex problem :p but you do get something back for the energy you send to the grid in most places.
Ohh, @Yamikuronue 's article looks interesting.
EDIT: It says what I said but better and with more detail

Not so silly if you're factoring loss of sunlight when they inevitably install it in a shady areola.

Huh.

Huh.
Your roof will save $10,000, not you
-
@timebandit it lives under my roof, so it's under my rules
-
@jaloopa But any hypothetical solar panels wouldn't be under the roof, therefore free to host wild rooftop parties and you wouldn't be able to say anything about it.
-
Is this "Project Sunroof (beta)"?
-
@hungrier You're right. I need to build another roof on top of them to keep them under control

isn't there a way to sell it back into the network?
It depends based on where you live and who your provider is. Even if you can sell excess power back, the amount you get for selling it back to the network compared to the amount you pay varies based on the same factors.
Effective this month, my electric company implemented a policy change on solar power buy back. If you were in their system prior to July 1, you're grandfathered in and continue to sell excess power at wholesale rates, which means that each kW you put into the grid during the day offsets a kW you take out of the grid at night. If you get put in the system now, they have some complex system for determining what you get for your excess power, but it will be less than the wholesale rate.
-
I'm in blakey's position: if I put in $10,000 of solar panels, I will eventually earn $10,000 worth of electricity over 20 years.
What happens if I put that money in the most boring possible investment: a high(hah!)-yield savings account, at 1.3%? I make $2,967.48 in interest over 20 years! I should put money in banks instead! Banks never do anything wrong!

If that's your opinion you havent tried it. It's the absolute best thing for a shiny and healthy shine to your fur. Not only that but the application process is a billion times more fun than those other moisturizers.
