I guess power over wifi is possible, but I'm not sure I'd want to be too close to the transmitter in that case. Not unless I wanted to warm up some food…

Status: Tonight our dryer stopped heating. I disassembled the back of it assuming that it was one of the high-cut thermostats. Nope. The heating element failed. I cleaned up the wire on each side of the break and used a solderless connector to connect it back up and ordered a new heating element to replace the failed one as my bodge connection will not last long. But, the dryer is working again.
Wife was thoroughly impressed. Clothes are drying. I call that a win, as long as the house does not burn down.
It just never ends......

Status: I find it somewhat odd that a forum whose culture appears from the outside to revolve around trolling and mockery (this one) is much more welcoming, helpful, and congenial than many other more heavily-policed ones.
Honestly, I find that whenever I have a question, someone on here can answer it, or at least give me things to think about. I've learned a lot from y'all.
Note: I may be writing this because I have to go back into lurker mode on another forum that I thought was pretty good. Too many arrogant, insulting jerks who take everything super serious and launch vicious personal attacks. Think the worst of the threads, except with more group-think and munchkinry.

It's not that odd. People who live in war zones play less Call of Duty.
-
@ben_lubar I'm not sure if that's literal or figurative, but either way...people here seem to mostly be good people who are playing characters. Some are playing the role of curmudgeon, some of troll, but underneath they're good people who try to help out when they can. And I appreciate that.
One of my favorite professors had a shtick of being the stereotype of an evil conservative nerd. Black socks with sandals (and shorts), constantly separating people into nerds and humans, espousing positions that would shock Genghis Khan, and generally acting like a caricature. Nicest guy, great teacher. Always available for help, would drop his research to help a student. Genuinely cared about people.
That's how I see many of the people here. Crusty on the surface, but nice enough underneath.

STATUS: Old job needs me for a couple weeks during my summer vacation. Oh, well. The money could be nice as I don't have full vacation pay due to not having worked a full year at my new job. At least I can use the dead time to prepare for my new job as that would be really helpful. So... Time to write some documentation!

In all seriousness, the only way to be sure you've removed them all properly is to reformat and reinstall Windows.

There's like a cottage industry of MS Visual Studio uninstallers, for different versions and flavors.
WTF Microsoft!? Un-freaking-believable.

No. TEXT should be good enough for any data.

Fuck governmental documentation up the arse with a rusty spork. Currently converting the shitpiles of requirements and specifications they want me to work with to something I actually can work with. Plenty cutting and pasting to bring matching sentences together from all over several pages of documentation so I can understand what they actually want.
Also, whoever wrote the technical bits doesn't actually seem to know a whole lot about the actual technical bits, so I have to run it through a sanity filter to bring it into actual reality. Colleague mentioned that it's likely caused by people who left the industry for cushy government jobs a few decades ago and has refused to keep up with changes and still write documentation based off 1980s tech.

If you're using sqlite, it converts types automatically behind the scenes anyway. If some idiot decides they want to claim that everything uses VARCHAR(65536) everywhere, it just does something more efficient anyway.
If you really want terrible, make sure you don't use prepared statements with parameters. String substitutions! String substitutions everywhere!

Status: One of my friends is going back to finish off his degree, and the school bought a couple Hololenses apparently, so he gets to work with them. It's nice to see my old school doing something that's actually useful for once, something people will probably actually keep using.
Meanwhile, it's almost August. I'll get my VR version soon! And then I suppose I'll have to go learn to deal with Unity...
