: Actually it's on 2008 R2 right now.
: ... what? Why? That's in violation of <insert various regulations here>.
: You're the one who told us we couldn't upgrade it a couple years ago.
: ... now that you mention it, I do remember that, but I don't know why. Let me get back to you after I fall down the rabbit hole of my e-mail for a few hours trying to figure it out.

@Perverted_Vixen So, how long before you were kicked out for gross indecency? :P

I don't "get" air travel. Changed up an itinerary, new itinerary was cheaper so I got a refund for $227 and a change fee of $200. Of course, the refund is in the form of a travel certificate. Why can't I just apply the refund against the change fee?! >:(

That's TR: there's no way it can justifiably cost $200 to change a booking.

Welcome to the world of air travel, which everyone seems to think was freaking awesome before United started visibly fucking up.
Spoiler: It's always been shitty; it's just better than the alternatives (driving 3,000 miles).

well, they can really, see, bookings cancelled too close to the flight time mean that the plane will have an empty seat where there would have been a paying passenger, planes are fucking expensive to run so you need a minimum number of passengers to make the trip profitable at a low enough price point to get people in the door, because we're in the middle of a race to the bottom thanks to tons of people purchasing on nothing more than cost margins have gotten paper thin.
so when you have a seat that was filled go to not filled you need to handle it and the margins are so thin that they're not going to be able to swallow it themselves. so they pass on to the customer what it costs to fly that empty seat as a rebooking charge.
If you do the math for the average plane in service flying the average route you come up with a total cost to break even per flight, including fuel, crew costs, maintenance, landing fees, takeoff fees, airport fees, and FAA fees/taxes yopu come up with about 195.mumble$ per flight per seat to reach the break even point.

It technically does: the "Automatic Updates" installer. The problem is it doesn't have any interface at all.

...dammit, it's just not possible to argue against that

Stupid slow package couriers. It shouldn't take 3 days to travel 600km.
-
@accalia Let's talk about low cost airlines dropping a flight two days after you booked it and changing your arrival to 9h later than previously scheduled and getting the options of refund (and rebook with a different airline for $100+ more) or a voucher that expires in 90 days.

They're counting on you losing the certificate.

But don't forget - this is also the rational for overbooking.

Yep, that was rhetorical. Either losing the certificate or not having any travel plans for the future to which you can apply it.

Meanwhile, I got a text telling me that one of my trains on tuesday may experience delays for up to an hour, offering me the ability to refund or rebook my ticket (despite being a non-refundable ticket). I call the train company asking what I should do, as I don't want to risk miss the connection and they gave me a ticket for the 1 hour earlier train. Also telling me that both of my tickets would be valid so I could pick whichever I wanted. Earlier to be safe, or later if I wanted to risk it.

sure. that's them doing the same sort of economics. it sucks and you're totally justified in being upset, but it doesn't mean they are intentionally being assholes about it at the corporate level.
the ticket agents that are assholes about it, they are being assholes about it.

That's because it essentially is the halting problem.

It's harder than the halting problem because in addition to figuring out if the program will halt, you have to figure out whether it is intended to halt.

No, they're perfectly happy to have you use the certificate.
If they give you a certificate for $200, they guarantee that you have to come back there and spend it. They have a profit margin, so giving you the certificate costs them less than its face value, and it makes sure that you're a repeat customer, and possibly a happy customer if they do better the next time -- at the very least, it gives them one more chance at it. But if they gave you $200 cash, it'd be the last they saw of it, and possibly of you.

You could buy me a ticket on Fandango so I can go hide in an air conditioned theater.
I'm all seriousness, both Netflix views (not reviews, you actually have to watch it) and rentals count towards the overall take of the movie and therefore the economics of similar projects in the future.
