The production lines are still fully capable of special orders and odd combinations, but dealers HATE IT.
Dealers hate him! Local man uses this 1 simple trick to fill special orders on cars!

Sony (numeric sequence - easy to distinguish and put in order):
- Playstation
- Playstation 2
- Playstation 3
- Playstation 4
Nintendo (completely different names - easy to distinguish):
- [Super] Nintendo Entertainment System
- Nintendo 64
- GameCube
- Wii [U]
- Switch
Microsoft (what in the world?!?):
- Xbox
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
Edit: added more consoles (thanks @RaceProUK!)

That works for the consoles, but the handhelds are Playstation Portable and Playstation Vita. Not quite so good.
But that's nothing compared to Nintendo:
- Game Boy
- Game Boy Color
- Game Boy Advance
- Game Boy Advance SP
- DS
- 3DS
OK, so far, so good. So, what's next?
- New 3DS
Oh dear…
And it's not much better with the home consoles:
- (Super) Nintendo Entertainment System
- Nintendo 64
- GameCube
- Wii
What's next?
- Wii U
Yup.
At least with Switch, they're back on form.
-
@djls45 & @RaceProUK :
- Nintendo Entertainment System
- (Super) Nintendo Entertainment System
- Nintendo 64
- GameCube
- Wii

@TimeBandit Wasn't that implied by
Super
being in brackets?

And the often forgotten DSi.
Nintendo's naming has been kinda sloppy this last decade.

If a person buys from Apple, they know it's going to be easy to upgrade.
They also know that 3 weeks after buying their speakers with iPod/iPhone dock, Apple will change the docking connector and fuck them over entirely.
There are 3 different models of the iPad named
iPad 2
, and they all look identical except for one digit being different in the text printed on the back.

Also, if you have families of products that more or less do the same thing but with different increasing qualities (or amount of features, or size or whatever), name them in a way that your customers can actually guess which is which!
Which one is the budget-level product, is that "premium", "luxury", "deluxe", "platinum", "prestige"?
This isn't just a problem in the tech world. At Starbucks, the three sizes of cups you can choose from are "large", "large", and "twenty". "Large" is the smallest size available.

New 3DS
Nintendo does this weird thing where they just throw "New" into the name of a product without realizing that they might at some point in the future want to release another product that is newer.

Where's the 2DS in this list?
-
@El_Heffe said in Product naming rant:
Windows 3.1
Windows 3.11These two make sense in that Microsoft’s numbering scheme at the time appears to have considered x.1 and x.10 to be the same: the same version will be called by one or the other in different places. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/32905/windows-version-history for examples of using x.10 where most people call these versions x.1.
@TimeBandit said in Product naming rant:

Not for public consumption. Windows 1.01 was the first sold AFAIK, and 2.03 was the first 2.x version, but no 1.0 or 2.0 as such. (Oddly, the Microsoft article I linked to above doesn’t list a 1.02, yet I have a copy of that.)

@RaceProUK do we stop there before or after we stop to pick up a 3DS?

After (the 3DS came first)
-
@RaceProUK that was my point, it could have been in the list to illustrate the non-obvious order more :D
