Oh, absolutely. Most of my keyboards are rather drab. Well, except the hideous rainbow lights one. Annoying AF.
Oh, ok then.
I don't think I would, unless it was really great in all other ways. I mean, if I had the money. Could easily be that I'd settle for an ugly piece of equipment that's great, if the nicer one would be outrageously overpriced or if I simply didn't have a money for it.
But I guess I already said that: it's only a factor in decision-making process. I wouldn't buy a beautifully designed shitty device.

@kt_ said in Re: Fuck Google:

I would make the obvious joke about you purchasing iPhones here, but I don't find them beautiful either. They're underpowered for their price and I think they look bland, that's all.
Also, while I did want to get my 5X in a different colour, Google decided that not all three would be available in Sweden. Again. As they always leave out the best option from all but a select few markets. Although considering I got a cover for it the colour of the phone is covered up anyway. Also, Apple are also guilty of that as their new iPad did not come in
pinkrose gold at all, which clearly would have been the best colour option for it had it been available. So I had to settle for plain gold.

My last keyboard was one of those split Microsoft ones, if that answers the question.
If there were two keyboards, both as comfortable to use, both with the same additional keys and both at the same price I would go for the one that looked nicer, but pretty much any other advantage to the uglier one would sway it that way for me. It's a fucking keyboard not a piece of artwork to hang on the wall

The thing is, both of these qualities usually go hand in hand. Good devices tend to look awesome. It is a part of what draws people to them and companies do understand that.
But we don't always agree on what looks awesome. Of course, to a degree, we outsource that to other people to decide for us.
I've never looked at Apple stuff and thought, "Wow, that looks awesome!" And so I never got to the next stage of, "It must be good stuff!"

TBH, all smartphones look broadly the same: a mono-colour slab with a logo.
Whether they be Apple
Android
or WinPhone
It's all the same, pretty much.

Nothing in iphone ever got me more than a meh. Maybe there are slightly better apps and games? But almost everything successful enough got ported to Android.
-
@RaceProUK That is true. It's rare to find phones that stick out design-wise. Seems the way to go for that is to get a cover for it in whatever color/pattern/motive you want. As long as it's not one of those iPhone covers with a hole for the Apple logo. Those just look stupid.

I don't know what looks good on me and what doesn't. As long as trousers are right size, I'd buy them - because they're the only trousers in the whole city that fit my big ass, and I need to wear something.

You might want to avoid the crotchless versions…
-
@dkf not avoiding anything when trying out every single thing around my size in the whole mall gives me +10% chance of finding even a single pair that fits me. For a grand total of 1.65%.

I wouldn't say that. The Samsung has this awful border, winphone looks a tad cheap, it looks like cheap plastic, though I could be wrong. The iPhones look slick and surely the nicest considering the rest of the lineup.
Of course, that's purely objective and yes, they are shaped similarly, but the finishing really puts them apart.

Yes, of course! How else would I be able to tell if I like how something looks?! And since I surely don't buy stuff whose looks I don't like, this also serves as a great way to direct my purchasing decisions.

Asking me what kind of clothes I like is like asking me what kind of pizza I want for dinner. If it's edible, I'll eat it. If it's not torn apart, I'll wear it. Good looking clothes are a social construct and I'm oppressed because of my lack of dress up abilities.
-
@Gąska said in Re: Fuck Google:

It's easy for men. If you want to look good, wear a suit. You don't need to think about it, and it covers up pretty much all sins (well, gluttony at least). I only wear a suit on special occasions (funerals, external project reviews, etc.) where I need a confidence boost, but it works wonders.

Yes. A pair of jeans and a nice shirt
It's extremely hard to find jeans if your waist is half the size of your ass and you're still not fat enough for XXL and up.
-
@Gąska said in Re: Fuck Google:

Wat.
Methinks you need to stop squeezing into those clothes...
-
@Tsaukpaetra maybe not half the size. But the difference is big enough that all pants that I can get past my butt, I need to fasten so tight they fold under the belt in several spots.
-

Does your waist also dramatically decrease in size right above it though?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I'm actually pretty skinny, but I wouldn't call it dramatic. Maybe a difference of a two to three centimeters. I can relate to @Gąska's folding experience for some pants, mostly dress pants.

I can only conclude that either you're wearing it wrong, or literally no pants designers know how to make correctly shaped pants.

The Pixel XL is the best phone I have ever used. I already bought another one from Google, but that was when Google had explained to me the phone was stolen. I accepted it was stolen, accepted responsibility for that, and moved on. Had I know that Project Fi was in fact blacklisting these phones, for whatever uncommunicated reason, I would have not bought another Pixel phone. "Fool me once...shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me," does not quite fit here due to Google and Project Fi support being less than truthful about the entire situation.
Haha?
I guess it's good we have Apple, who will lock you out of the used iDevice someone else sold you if they reset it wrong as opposed to just locking you out of cell service.
Wait, is good the right word for that? I don't think it is.
-
@sloosecannon Non- response:
I'm torn on the issue because I can understand both sides of it. Google's obviously trying to decrease phone thefts, same as Apple, and it's an effective way to do that, but it also has a very high chance of false positives. It would be nice if Google would shoot the original Gmail account owner an email asking if they lost their phone (and allowing them to call off the dogs) before blacklisting the IMEI. Along the lines of "Hi! We noticed someone (not you) logged in to your Pixel XL. This might mean your phone has been lost or stolen. If it is, [supportive prspeak]. If this was you, or if you sold your phone to someone else, click [here] to let us know!". OTOH, most users would probably ignore that email so it wouldn't really solve the issue.Since a factory data reset can be done unauthenticated (via
fastboot
and recovery), it's not an action that can prove the original owner's intention. The good thing about that is that no matter how badly your user data is screwed, you can always make the phone bootable, even if you Jan 1st 1970 yourself making it nigh impossible to hard-brick.

I bought a Vauxhall this week that's pretty good. It's the second-smallest in the range, but it's got air-con, cruise control, speed limiter, parking sensors, automatic wipers, automatic lights, a DAB radio and CD player with Bluetooth so I can pair my phone, electric windows, electric mirrors, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, front fog lights... That's just the stuff I can remember. And a lot of it was almost unheard of on small cars five years ago. And if I activate this OneStar thing, my car becomes a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot.

Which is funny because when your login is suspicious, you're the first one to see the email, and you can e.g. delete it before anyone notices.

Wait, is good the right word for that? I don't think it is.
I didn't read the article thoroughly but it seems it's about turning off Find My iPhone. It's a good thing. This feature is there to ensure that if someone steals your phone, they can't use it.
I mean, you wouldn't want your phone to work with this feature still on. Especially since the original owner seems to still be able to turn it off even if you you already have the device. So you don't even need to send the phone back for them to do it.
So what's the problem here? Anti-theft feature working as it's supposed to?

It's the usual battle between security and usability
-
Since a factory data reset can be done unauthenticated (via
fastboot
and recovery), it's not an action that can prove the original owner's intention. But surely, Apple/Google could design the OS so that a factory-reset-from-unlocked-phone has an extra step (perhaps an ambitious one like "don't brick/disconnect the phone"), as opposed to a factory-reset-from-fastboot? Even if the actual factory-reset process is identical, the unlocked-phone-flow could do some extra work before calling the factory-reset routine.
