Hover :wtf:

I am finally getting around to moving all my stuff off of GoDaddy. I should have done so years ago, but there is no nation like procrastination. Having heard a lot of good things about Hover from my marketing and web friends, I figure they cannot be worse than GoDaddy.
I navigate to hover.com and there is no link to setup an account. I click on the link to transfer a domain name and it says it can start the transfer, but I need to unlock my domain name for transfer.
Wait a fucking minute...I have not setup an account yet. I am not going to unlock my domain name and start the transfer without having an account for them to land in before I do so...
Let's hop in to their ZenDesk chat and see what I am missing:
You have to be fist-fucking me? You want me to unlock my domain and start the transfer process before I setup an account?? No thank you.
Anyone have a good recommendation for a registrar that is not shit?
-
@Polygeekery I've used Gandi before and they seem to be pretty good. I don't know about their transfer process though.

Moved away from GoDaddy years ago and I'm very satisfied with them:

In all honesty (no ) I would have recommended GoDaddy - we're migrating that way from Enom at work.
I would definitely un-recommend Enom. Their support department is awful, and they don't give you options for changing your TTL if you're using their hosted DNS.

I just moved to GreenGeeks. The reviews were good. And the chat I had with them on the website was extremely helpful. They guided me thru exactly what needed doing. Now that the DNS changes have be percolating for almost 48 hours, I've started the actual transfer process. (And they had a REALLY good discount when signing up for 3 yrs: 106.20. And the normal rate is still cheaper than what I'm currently paying)

I've never had reason to complain about A Small Orange. They're more into webhosting, but you can also buy domains from them.

They might just be saying that creating the account is part of the process, hopefully the very first part...
I don't hold out any hope that it is like that, of course...

Though to be fair, it might go "unlock domain -> create account -> begin transfer"
-
@Steve_The_Cynic said in Hover :

It is not.
You have to unlock your domain before the account creation process is started. I am amazed that they have any business if you have to do that before you setup an account. They have the workflow of a scam site that is setup to steal domain names.
-
@Polygeekery said in Hover :

Wow....
Could you imagine Walmart losing it's domain name because of a transfer....
-

That is still a batshit insane workflow. Who would do that?
Nevermind. We are on a site dedicated to the people who would do such things...
-
@Polygeekery I suspect they're trying to solve the issue that people who, wanting to accomplish a task, are presented with a signup form, often abandon because it seems "too daunting" to fill out all those fields with no investment. That's why you don't get account creation until you're ready to checkout at shopping sites, so you're invested in your cart already. But... it's not really applicable here.

(confused). People trying to transfer an Internet domain name are daunted by a web form?
(No, I get it. People really are that stupid. But ...)
-
@Steve_The_Cynic It's not a stupidity thing, I don't think. It's more of a "eh... too much work, I'll do this later" and then you never get around to it. I've done that a lot.

Check out https://domains.google.com/ for Google's registrar.
Hmmmmm, I may have to look in to this one. Hover's big selling point was that it included privacy by default without an additional upcharge.
I may go with them anyway. I will see if they will setup an account for me, and I will tell them how stupid their workflow is while I am at it.
-
@Polygeekery I use them, and I've never had issues. I like their control panel, it's less retarded than many I've worked with. But I bought a domain first.
-
@Yamikuronue yeah, the workflow would be fine for buying a domain. It is a bit sketchy for a transfer.
-
@Polygeekery
I mean, all "unlock domain" does is change a flag in your registrar's database so that if someone sends a "can I haz domain" request, your current registrar will respond "well, we can see about that" rather than "ha ha ha nope"I see it more as opening a hole in your firewall to your SQL (or phone) server. Now people can try to authenticate, but they still have to actually authenticate before they can do anything with it. Or find an authentication bypass vulnerability... but you know what, that's distracting from my analogy -- SQUIRREL!
-
The process GreenGeeks guided me thru was (is):
- Create account
- Copy website
- Redirect DNS records from old account
- wait ...
- unlock (I actually did that during the 1st 2 steps)
- begin transfer process
- supply GG the authorization code from the old account
(currently here) - once that's done, then I can kill off the old acccount
I think I captured all the steps so far...
Edit: Well fuck. Turns out Yahoo/Aabaco transferred my domain to tucows on 3/26. So I'm stuck in the 60day lockout when >I< didn't do anything.
(creates task in calendar to start transfer on 5/26 - tucows web site chat was very helpful in letting my know what the dates were)
-
@izzion yeah, it's not like unlocking your domain name for transfer lets anyone just snipe it. You still have to approve the request.

I get that, but would you open up a port for someone before you have an existing relationship with their business? Would you open ports for random people? The workflow is still silly.

@Polygeekery Since all my podcasts are pimping it, I decided to give hover a try.
Couldn't register. Apparently their phone validator fails at recognizing Serbian numbers.
Oh well. Namecheap is actually pretty decent. No complaints so far.

Opening these 12 ports for random people saved his business thousands! One simple trick that firewall vendors don't want you to know!

Seconding the gandi.net recommendation. Their prices aren't crazy, they're very up-front about their terms and conditions, their web UI has a "simplified' view and a "big textbox with the zone data" view, and they've an API for doing most everything without the web UI.
-
Don't you have to unlock on the GoDaddy side?

It was the winner. They throw in private registration, and they allow you to keep all remaining time on your existing domains. That last part is really genius on their part, because it keeps you from waiting until your domain is about to expire before transferring. They should hype that feature more. Now I will also transfer my domains that just renewed without me realizing it. I am not throwing money away by transferring to them.

On .xyz domains, it's forbidden to defame: Justin Bieber, Oprah Winfrey, and Daniel Negari (CEO of XYZ[2]).[3]

Hmmmmm, $0.99 to register a domain name on .xyz. That might be worth it for a chuckle.
-
@dse XYZ used to be the cheapest, but there was a catch on renewal. Many cheap TLDs increase the price tenfold on renewal.
There is another problem with cheap TLDs. They are overused by malware, and WTFbank firewall just blocked their entire TLD. No idea how common this type of blocking is.

Isn't .xxx for porn and cartoons containing bottles of alcohol?
