Still better than Buick drivers. Who are experts in Pedal Confusion and Not Accelerating At All.Gorram old people, why are they driving, grumble grumble

I'm sure there will be a massive drop in quality from cars built in Spain to cars still built in Spain but under French management...

Isn't that because all Buick drivers are about 104?

Yep, that earns fuckface points.

Corvette
No, that doesn't. The Corvette may not be the best sports car in the world, but that doesn't stop it being a fantastic car, especially in Stingray form.
-
@izzion How do you expect them to accelerate when they don't know which lever is the velocitator and which is the deceleratrix?
-

No, that doesn't. The Corvette may not be the best sports car in the world, but that doesn't stop it being a fantastic car, especially in Stingray form.
Corvette owners are generally also a pretty friendly lot. There is even a sort of motto among Corvette owners of "Save the wave". An owner of a 2017 Z06 can pass someone driving a clapped out 70's model with fading paint and they always wave at each other.

No, I do not have a mullet.
I bought it when I was 21 and I was drunk at a card game.

That'll be the… C4, I think.
Yeah, that one's a bit of a wet blanket compared to the others. Really, if you want a classic, you want the C2 or the C3.

@Polygeekery
You should retcon that to "I won it at a card game, while drunk." A much smexier origin story...

@Polygeekery
You should retcon that to "I won it at a card game, while drunk." A much smexier origin story...Yeah, but there is also a bit of panache to how it happened. We had all been drinking heavily and one of the guys at the game was about to get married and his fiancee had asked him to get rid of the car (Why? I bet that marriage did not turn out well in the long run...) I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said he would take payoff for it, which was ~50% of the book value on the car. I told him I would write him a check for it. Being that I was 15 years younger than the crowd at the card game, he told me that if the check would clear the bank I could have it.
The check was good and I became a Corvette owner. I have had it ever since.
-
@Polygeekery I'll allow it. 80s cool.
-
@Polygeekery said in In Car Tech - Mercedes WTF:

Reminds me of a friend that came to see me and he told me that his girlfriend asked him to choose between her and his motorcycle.
I didn't ask what he answered her since he came on his motorcycle

Joke aside, one of my great-uncle who got sent to Germany later became an auto mechanic! And another worked for Renault, but he was too young during the war. Mind you, their father was a farrier/blacksmith, so their choices of careers weren't totally unexpected.

Very cute.It is also as rare as hen's teeth. You better have deep pockets.
$42,900 is the cheap end. It goes up rapidly from there. The 1953 models (which, were VERY cute) are considered to be priceless.

$42,900 is the cheap end. It goes up rapidly from there.On that note, my favorite year is the '63 Grand Sport. My pockets are not that deep though. The replicas start in the $125K range. Technically speaking I could afford one of those, but I would have to give up half of my assets to do so.

To be extra , in the real sense of the word, humans cannot multitask at all. Instead, we context-switch: 100ms of driving, 100ms of laptop time, and repeat.
-
@Polygeekery That's because of this capitalism you love so much. In Cuba all you see on the streets are cool retro vehicles.

If it actually were that fast we wouldn't have so many problems :)

Are those the ones with an inline-6 engine?
I saw an early I6 Corvette at a museum once. They also had a later C1 with a V8 there, but it didn't have the big round headlights which made it a lot less cute.

after having the lovely experience of driving over parts of my own engine (way back when, US Road-Trip, too young to hire a car) in a Ford (festiva), I've sworn to myself never to buy a ford again.
on my last trip to the US I got a rental Ford. decent Car.
Was it a Fusion? We get those frequently for rental cars and they always feel like you are driving a bowl of cold oatmeal.
I can second that. I drove a ford fusion about 15 years ago, and it was a piece of shit when accelerating. It was awful in NYC traffic (of course that was before I learned to cut everyone when merging).
I got a ticket going 86 in a 65 in a ford focus. But the only reason I got that ticket was cuz I was trying to keep up with my friends and when I saw everyone slowing down for the cop, I knew that it would take me half an hour to build my speed up to 86 again, so I didn't slow down.
-
@dangeRuss said in In Car Tech - Mercedes WTF:

In the end, you had to come to a complete stop, wait ~20 minutes for the cop to write the ticket, then try to reach 86 from stand-still. I don't think your decision was a good one

In hindsight it wasn't a very smart decision, but again I was pretty much a n00b at driving at the time. My point is that ford focus has really shitty acceleration.

why does that look/sound wrong to me? I think I would've said a European, even though technically it's not grammatically correct.

It's "an" before vowel sounds, not just vowels-when-written. European is prononuced like "yur-oh-pee-an", and that 'y' sound at the beginning makes "a" correct. Compare with "an egg"

Maybe that one from several years ago, but the more recent ones accelerate just fine.
My big complaint is with the turning radius. A U-turn across 2 lanes should not be a 3-point maneuver!
