Random thought, back in the day people had to do a lot more mental math right? Now calculators are a dime a dozen and everyone has phones.
Do you think that people will be unable to do math on their own in the future? What happens when the calculator.io API goes down? Or when your ocular implant decides to reboot for updates and becomes unusable for the next half hour?

Discourse will still be designed for 10 years in the future.

@bb36e Who cares what happens 200 years from now?

@Zecc it's fun to think about!

The ocular implant should be like Windows 10. Only reboot at 2am. Meaning a lot of wild late-night parties will become quite terrifying in the future.
Technology predictions are going to be crazy in the next century, though. No doubt genetic engineering will find its way to human reproduction whether people like it or not, and I'll bet we won't be eating previously living animals anymore, and instead be eating meat grown in a lab that has no sentience, so it's possible veganism will take a break, at least animal-rights motivated veganism. I'm sure there will still be health nuts out there. But, hey, even then, we'd probably have tons of meds to offset whatever unhealthy diet eating meat can bring, so even those people can shut up.
The more interesting thing to ask is what society will be like in 2117. Will the whole race war we're having now, fueled by both racists and oversensitive ninnies get reduced to people actually just being chill with eachother, or will Tumblr win and force everyone to express the most vanilla and harmless thoughts for fear of offending somebody?
Sorry, I hope I didn't guacamole the thread.

This is an interesting thought that I often get when watching sci-fi movies. Computers have existed for a while now and they've always had annoying technical issues, it seems unlikely that this will change any time soon.
Just once I'd like to see a scene that went like
"OK, boss, I've made it past the guards"
"Great, I've sent you a 3D map of the building, just head for the hidden vault in the second floor and..."
"Wait, I'm not seeing a 3D map"
"That's weird, I'm sure I sent it... have you checked the spam folder?"
"Oh, hold on, I do see a message from you, but it says something about unrecognized file format"
"Well, it's a standard .3dm file... is your mapping app up to date?"
"Yes, I have auto update enabled, says it's version 128.3"
"Dammit Steve! Are you still on eyeOS 16? Of course you can't open the newer formats on that old thing!"
"But boss, I don't like the new interface on eyeOS 20, it's too flashy, gives me a headache"
-
@anonymous234 I am so sending that to a friend of mine who produces indie films (mostly deliberately low-end sci-fi in the vein of Troma flicks until recently, but he seems to be looking at more 'serious' stuff lately). That's got the potential for comedy gold.

Good, because I discovered than Windows XP can't handle dates beyond 2080.

In the year 2117
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find—In the year 3117
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took todayIn the year 4117
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at youIn the year 5117
Your arms are hanging limp at your side
You legs got nothing to do
Some machine's doing that for youIn the year 6117
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your sons, pick your daughters too
From the bottom of a long glass tube
Whoa-oh-ohIn the year 7117
If God's a-coming, he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
“Guess it's time for the judgement day!”In the year 8117
God is gonna shake his mighty head
He'll either say, “I'm pleased, where man has been”
Or tear it down and start again
Whoa-oh-ohIn the year 9117
I'm kinda wondering, if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old Earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Whoa-oh-ohNow it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew
Now man's reign is through
But through the eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday
-
In the year one-oh-five one-oh-five,
If man is still alive,
If robot can survive,
They may find...In the year twenty-five twenty-five twenty-five,
The backwards time machine still won't have arrived,
In all the world, there's only one technology:
A rusty sword for practicing proctology! In a future year that ends with a twenty,
A shlubby merman's gonna try to get chummy.
He may look like a watery wimp,
When in fact he's a bloodthirsty shrimp! In the year one million and a half,
Humankind is enslaved by giraffe.
Man must pay for all his misdeeds,
When the treetops are stripped of their leaves!

Other random semi-related topics:
Due to various memory management fuckery, Windows 95 will fail to boot if you have more than around 480MB of memory. (This was considered an enormous amount of memory back then. )
Windows 98 bumped the limit to 1GB because there existed a vendor who wanted to sell machines with 1GB of RAM and preinstall Windows 98 instead of Windows NT.
"When we set the upper limit of PC-DOS at 640K, we thought nobody would ever need that much memory.
— William Gates, chairman of Microsoft"Those words appeared at the beginning of an editorial written by James Fawcette in the April 29, 1985 issue of InfoWorld magazine. But, no reference was given, and the words do not occur as part of any interview.

And he has since repeatedly denied ever saying it. However, the quote will live on, legitimate or not, or rather the paraphrase — Nobody will ever need more than that — will live on..

Quote Investigator: During the 1990s Bill Gates wrote a syndicated newspaper column in which he answered questions from the public. When he was asked about the saying in 1996 he replied [BGLA]:
I’ve said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough for all time.
...
In 1996 Gates denied that he made the remark as discussed earlier in this post. He also questioned the existence of any solid reference for the statement [BGLA]:
Meanwhile, I keep bumping into that silly quotation attributed to me that says 640K of memory is enough. There’s never a citation; the quotation just floats like a rumor, repeated again and again.
-
Thanks. Quote Investigator sounds like a nice site.

"BIll Gates in Los Angeles"
Close. It's a reference to a citation at the end of the page. Glancing at a few of the references leads me to induce that their references are more-or-less systematic — the first two letters indicate the person whose alleged quote they are investigating, and the second two indicate the information source. In this case, BGLA, the BG denotes Bill Gates, and the LA indicates an interview in the Los Angeles Times, the details of which are in the citation.

In 2117 Philip Zuckerberg, the god emperor of earth, owner of the robots that do all the work and feed us, will convert to radical Islamism.
Sharia law will be enforced to an extreme level never seen before. The emperor own all the land, his robots mounted weapons are the only in existence, and their AI will only obey to the emperor's instructions.
With cameras and face recognition everywhere, anyone missing their daily prayers will be punished harshly, getting up to one week without access to the internet.
The self driving cars will refuse to carry a woman without her husband with her. The cooking robots will no longer prepare artificial bacon.
This will be remembered as the insufficiently iluminated age.

Half-Life 3 will actually be announced within the next 5 years, and will have a focus on VR.
This also includes the alternative scenarios "Valve finally reveals they are NOT developing HL3" and "Valve releases some other game in the spirit of HL3 that is not named HL3"

@dkf Come on, Valve is not like that.
They sell many other useless virtual items other than hats: weapon reskins, taunts, cards, stickers, particle effects, emoticons... had you ever seen a company sell emoticons? That's how good Valve is.

I secretly wondered what the point of VR hats was. I accidentally placed one on my character and couldn't figure out how to get it off (because I was playing with a mouse and keyboard, and it is impossible with the current control scheme to reach the emulated hand up to your "head" to attempt taking it off...
