Discussion of NodeBB Updates

@heterodox that is unilateral bullshit.

No, it defaulted to off and I turned it on.
So it defaulted to off, you turned it on, @boomzilla turned it back off, and then you turned it back on? Why?
I assumed @boomzilla thought the option was "hide downvotes and more than 5 upvotes from everyone" and turned it off because he wanted to enable the feature.

Then he turned it off again, and you turned it on yet again. Despite that everyone was still discussing whether it should be a thing.
It makes no sense, Ben.

@Polygeekery said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

It has gone on-off-on. There was no second off-on cycle.
-
@ben_lubar regardless, you should have discussed it with the admins. Just exposing information that was once private is a shitty thing to do to users. Even if that information is as dumb as downvotes.
You should have asked boomzilla about it before you unilaterally turned it on, and definitely before you turned it on the second time.

Like, Ben?? This post does not jive with what you just said. At all.

We had a thread going for a while where we basically came to the consensus of "we should make downvotes public". You must have seen that thread, since you made at least 10 posts to it today.
I made the option. I turned it on. @boomzilla turned it off, which I believed at the time to have been a misunderstanding. I turned it back on.
Six hours later we're having this discussion.

Getting a sense of deja vu...

We did? There were a ton of people who said otherwise, and even boomzilla said that though you were implementing the option, no decision had been made to turn it on.
It is still a shitty thing to do to users. Especially users who are not privy to the lounge, or those that have not been on the forums this week.
@blakeyrat, can you take a sabbatical from your sabbatical? This is right up your alley.

Deja Vu all over again? It's a glitch in the Matrix, they have changed something.

Six hours later we're having this discussion.
Also a .
Let me get the timeline straight:
Implement feature, without being asked
Roll that feature in to an update
Update forum
Turn on feature still being discussed, without consulting other admins
Boomzilla turns the feature back off
Turn it back on, without consulting other admins
Then you fuck off somewhere else for six hours, despite how often updates break the goddamn forums?!?!It boggles the mind.
-
@Polygeekery do you want me to invent a time machine that will take your post back in time six hours so we can have this discussion six hours ago?
-
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
We had a thread going for a while where we basically came to the consensus of "we should make downvotes public".
No, it didn't. Even if it did, members don't decide for the rest of the forum. That responsibility is entrusted to the admins, one of which had had said hours before the update that the question would be posed to the rest of the forum.
Whether this was an outstanding miscommunication or a fait accompli, this highlights a process that needs to be handled better. Because this kind of amateur-hour nonsense is the sort of thing we're supposed to be laughing at in this forum atop its ivory tower.
-

Would it matter? You paid no attention to the posts six hours ago either. Like the one where boomzilla said he turned it off.
-
I just re-read every single post in the meta topic. There are 10 people saying "yes, downvotes should be public" and 1 person saying "no, downvotes should not be public".
Is 91% approval not enough to make a decision?

...How many users do we have? How many did not see the discussion? How many users couldn't see the discussion? How many admins told you to turn it on?
11 users should not be making those sort of decisions for the entire forum. I say that as one of the 11 and one of the ones in favor of turning it on, but with caveats. Like potentially wiping all downvotes, to keep once private information from being exposed.
-
@ben_lubar yes. thats twice as much % votes as trump got, run with it.
-
And why are we treating the flag as now immutable?
@boomzilla said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
True. Eh...I guess @ben_lubar set it back? I don't think this is a fight that I can win.
Why should it be a fight? That attitude is discouraging. We can return to the status quo while discussion concludes and if it be the consensus, turn it back on with no one the worse for it.
It's not a genie or a data dump that's now on torrent sites everywhere or something.
-
@Polygeekery meh, people surely can't be that torn out about someone else gasp KNOWING THAT YOU DIDNT LIKE SOMETHING THEY SAID ONCE ONOESSSS
-

the meta topic
There were three votes when you turned it on! Three!
-
@Polygeekery there's a meta topic?
or is that the one i posted in....?

I was in the camp that did not care if my voting history was public. I could also see how others might not be.
-
@Polygeekery you seeing other people's side of things? wtf got into you tonight. did you argue with @fox too long and get some rubbed off on you?

Note that my post is #4, saying that it was already on.

Ok here's a forum update with some new features that I think you'll all like.
This feature was set wrong so I flipped the switch.
I think you flipped the switch the opposite of the way you wanted, so I'm going to flip it back under the assumption that this was a misunderstanding.

I usually do see other's positions. I frequently argue against my own. I am a 😈

Ok. I'll ask.
Hey, @boomzilla, did you misunderstand the thing that we've established I incorrectly thought you misunderstood?
-
@ben_lubar I am his alt, he wanted it off. No one yet wanted it on. That is why he turned it off.
-
@ben_lubar You're repeating what you said above with no indication that you've understood what's been said in response.
The issue was the speed, Ben. If you thought @boomzilla wanted it, why not wait for him to turn it on? He knew the update was coming.
When he changed it, why change it back immediately instead of trying to clear up the misunderstanding? He was SAYING IN THIS THREAD WHILE @MENTIONING YOU THAT HE INTENDED THE OPPOSITE BEHAVIOR.
-
@heterodox and maybe let more than three votes be counted before turning it on?
-
@Polygeekery said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

I mean, this isn't a democracy. The admins make the final call. But one had MADE a call and the other was overriding it, either willfully or ignorantly. I think that's the source of the bitching.
-
@heterodox said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
I mean, this isn't a democracy.
Of course not. But if he wants to cite 10/11 votes in the meta thread, then it needs to be stated that only three votes occurred before it was turned on the second time.
-
@fbmac said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
It just show the avatar, so I can use @ben_lubar avatar and go amok downvote g everyone
FFS, and of course they put the Title="{username}" on the IMAGE instead of the wrapping element. So you can't do
.avatar::after{content:attr(Title)}
because::after
don't work on images.Despite having filed a ticket for this for other avatar images for the exact same reason.
Again with NodeBBDev's wonderful "Let's do the same thing, differently, everywhere" coding style.

Sure, let's just ignore the thread that was created 4 days before the code was even written.
-
There was no consensus there either, and a shitload of users could not even see it.

Hey boomy, I see you turned that feature off. You turned off the feature that allows everyone to see downvotes.
Yeah, we are still discussing whether to turn it on or not. Let's leave it off for now and come back to it on Monday.
OK, got it. I am going to go watch dwarves have a circle jerk with some goats. Have a good weekend.
Have a good weekend. I am going to go get shitfaced on cheap booze with green food coloring in it. Enjoy the dwarf orgy. That is all it would have taken.

... actually no, I wouldn't.

Seriously though. I like to defuse conflict with humor, but I'd like to reach an actual conclusion to this mess, one that acknowledges this confusion in the implementation of a major change is not really what I think most regular members of this forum would expect of the admins, whom we generally hold in high regard. (Some of us are just assholes and don't hold anyone in high regard. ;)) And I think we're hoping it won't happen again in the future. It'd be nice to get some reassurance on that front.
I mean, what I'd really like is a return to status quo while the promised discussion continues, but I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that won't happen.
-
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
assumption
Yeah, don't do that. People get murdered for that kinda shit...
-
I don't care about my downvotes, but I oppose it on principle. And then the pop-up had an horrible GUI useless in Mobile when I don't recognize the avatars, as one should expect from NodeBB.
-
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Careful, @Polygeekery , this is a trick question. Ben wouldn't suggest something like this unless he already had a fairly detailed idea on how to build it. Before you know it, your kids will be eating Lojban-soup and be named Ironrock Stonefaceunderside.
-
While I'm firmly in the 'I'm fine with this' category, the mobile UX is even worse than usual.
You tap the vote number, and then 5-10 seconds later a window pops up.
Would it be possible to make it so the window only pops up if there are downvotes?
-
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
Hey, @boomzilla, did you misunderstand the thing that we've established I incorrectly thought you misunderstood?
Third base!
Err...I thought that the ability of logged in users to view all voting was accidentally turned on, so I turned it off, because we were all discussing what to do about it. Then I got drunk and you turned it back on and now I'm awake again.

@coldandtired said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Note that it also shows you all of the upvotes. See here for the most ridiculous case:

@boomzilla I don't regret anything.
