ProcrastinatingDone studying for a midterm I have in three hours. It's at that point where if I don't know it by now I'm not going to learn it.Representative problem from midterm: 246 ^ 909 mod 296. No calculator allowed; have to do it by hand. Thank God I knew the way to decompose that into something manageable (and I got it right!). Not as bad as proofs, though; no way to study for those, really, except just insofar as making sure you don't suck at maths like I do.

Hmm I actually couldn't complete that problem by hand using the discrete.simple.math library. Well, not within the time constraints of an exam. That's mostly because I don't have any correlation rules between power and modulus operators. Though if I were to guess I'd put down.... 128?terribly Off, I'm sure.

Well, a bit off. The answer is 216.
246^2 mod 296 = 60516 mod 296 = 132
246^3 mod 296 = 246^2 * 246 mod 296 = ((132^2 mod 296) * 246) mod 296 = 4286304 mod 296 = 224
246^7 mod 296 = ((246^3 mod 296)^2 * 246) mod 296...Similarly compute 246^14, 246^28, 246^56, 246^113, 246^227, 246^454, then 246^909. Due to the properties of modular multiplication you can take each intermediate step's remainder in order to keep the numbers (relatively) small. If you couldn't, use of RSA would be impossible since you're using a 1024-bit number (much, much larger) as an exponent.
So you can do it by hand using fairly simple multiplication and long division, it's just tedious and requires a good plastic eraser. :)
For the second such problem the professor picked the numbers very carefully so x^2 mod n = 1 which means you can jump directly to the end; the answer is either 1 or x (if x < n), depending on whether x is even or odd in base 2.
-
@heterodox I attempted and failed miserably.

Are there many jobs where that situation is common?

Obviously I've never had to do it, but I'm assuming spacemen with a damaged computer might. You never know.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Maybe teaching exams where you need to make 30 exact copies of a worksheet by hand.
-
Learning C again ... I get about half way though K & R and get bored ... need to stay focused this time.
-
@heterodox I don't remember learning the theory behind that, but I got as far as determining that
246y mod 296 = 246(y mod 148) mod 296
which allowed me to find that:
2462 mod 296 = 246 × 98 mod 296 = 132
so, 246909 mod 296 = 246 × 98908 mod 296 = ?before I gave up, not thinking of any way to reach the answer faster than repeating that 907 more times.
It looks like you were using the identity
xy mod n = (x mod n)(y mod n) mod n
to break it down into small partial products (all within the range [0..n-1]), and I didn't manage to generalize it to that.

So i'm supposed to do drug test. Yay pee-in-a-cup BS. Fine.

Okay, fine. But just to make sure of the insanity of these working hours, I decide to
So I dial the number. Except nobody answers, and I get a generic "This user's mailbox is full." W. T. F.
First off, how is it possible in the modern age to have the ability to "fill a mailbox"? Are they limited to 500 kb of Speex-quality audio?
OMG I have to pee and I'm not allowed to! Whatever, fuck it! You'll get your sample on Monday!

@anotherusername Also note that for any X, N there is a Y such that either
x^y==1 mod n
orx^y==0 mod n

@PleegWat ITYM that either xy mod n == 1 or xy mod n == 0.

Oh, and it'll have to be Monday, because

That would be the reason I don't want another black one. Once you go black you can go back.

I'm talking about a half-decent car maker. Anyway not my concern ... it only has to last 4 years maximum until the next trade in.

Status: bit pissed off.
Tuesday night, I ordered: 1x TV, 1x HDMI cable, 1x PS4 with Lego Star Wars, 1x Skylanders. All with one day shipping which "guaranteed delivery on Thursday"
Thursday, learn the PS4 and Skylanders are "on time" for Friday.
Friday, collect everything, discover PS4 does not come bundled with Lego Star Wars, but does come with HDMI cable. Email to Amazon duly dispatched.
-
@Arantor was it through Prime? I hear you can get free months of prime every time they don't deliver next day
-
@Jaloopa it was not through prime, they already refunded the delivery fee.
Now just need to get the game that was supposed to be bundled but wasn't.

Status: Some of you may remember me having a bad spot of kidney stones about 2 years back which necessitated four stays in a hospital over the course of 4 months.
They just now sent me another 2 bills over ~600€ total. Which is annoying. Because now I have to send the bills to my insurance company and copies of the bills to a local authority (for historical reasons and raisins, the easiest description of why is: Both pay half. Usually.)
I also had to fill out special forms to include. This is done by snail mail.
Until today, at least. I just discovered that my insurance company has ganged up with other insurance companies and created an app which does pretty much at least the part for the insurance company for me.
I simply scan two QR codes at the bottom of the bill and that's it. I'm done.
This leaves me only with the "send copies to the local authority" part.

In my case, it's not the same clock, 'cause I'm taking a drug test for the contract position while my first day for the new job starts Monday. So yay schedule conflict.

Okay, that went well enough.
Now I'm trying to implement lazy loading of the results of functions.
Problem seems to be that results can be arrays, which I'm puzzling over how to make the individual elements being returned also be lazy (because otherwise I end up lazy loading the whole array anyways when called for, which is obviating the point of the exercise).
... *sigh*....

Status: had a really depressing Duskers stream. Apparently despite being a fully released game, there's still a bug that can delete random items from your inventory whenever you load your save. Just spent an hour getting video timestamps and Google Drive save file backups to include in a bug report to the dev. Not sure when I'll play the game again...

Basically, I used a lot of trigonometry to make all the shadows and highlights relative to a point that is the "light source." And the squares are inset instead of outset (believe it or not, for some reason it is stupidly hard to pull off an inner shadow in Canvas).
I'm not sure if it actually looks better though. Thoughts?

I looks different, but during gameplay I personally wouldn't care whether the board looks like engraved plastic or felt divots.

@Tsaukpaetra I'm waiting for feedback before I deploy the change. I don't care if it only looks slightly better, but I don't want it to look worse (and I can't tell which it is).
