I hate Cilantro thread because why not?

I like Mexican food but not with cilantro.
My Trini friend at work had Spicy Mango with Shado Beni.
While not actually cilantro, it is also called culantro and IS freaking related.
I told her I can handle the spicy but I don't like the cilantro or its cousins.
I had to look it up for her to show her that they were related.
"...the name culantro sometimes causes confusion with Coriandrum sativum (also in Apiaceae), the leaves of which are known as cilantro, and of which culantro is said to taste like a stronger version.[2]" [Emphasis added]
-
I've met tons of people who hate cilantro (and its cousins).
It's been told to me that it tastes of 'soap' to some people, but not to others, and that may be the reason people hate it... because it tastes like soap to them. It's sort of like the aspargus thing, some people for some reason just don't get stinky pee... weird.
Anyways, it tastes of soap to me as well.
But I honestly don't care.
I don't hate the stuff, but I don't exactly love it either.
Never particularly thought about it until in recent years when the internet has exploded with "I hate cilantro" rants.

I don't think it tastes like soap. It is just a spice I don't like but could figure out what it was because the taste was so distinctive.
I don't like Indian food either because I don't like many of the spices.
There is a spice in Italian food that I don't like but haven't figured out what it is.
But then I'm the only one in the family that likes black licorice.
I just have a wierd pallette, I guess.

I'm betting it's fennel...

And the only curry I like is West Indian.

It does taste soapy to me, but not terrible. My mother hates it passionately, and I think I got the gene from her.
-
Cilantro is pretty terrible.
-
-
Guacamole just wouldn't be the same without cilantro though.
-
@Placeholder In a pinch you can substitute dish soap.
-
@Placeholder said in I hate Cilantro thread because why not?:

AND that's a GOOD thing!
-
@Karla I once had a very memorable argument with somebody over the merits of cilantro in guacamole before I learned that some people really do taste it differently. Nowadays, I know to ask people about it before assuming that they think cilantro tastes as good as I think it does.

yes, but i still would have marked the thread ignore.

This. I can tell immediately if there's any in my food, and just don't like it at all.

They use a lot of coriander too.
-
@Magus Yeah, I knew that. But I think it is more than just that.

I can't remember what we call cilantro in proper English speaking countries

soap. we call it soap.

Coriander, I believe.

Yes, that is another name for it.

I've had wildly different experiences with cilantro. On the one side of the scale, the first time my mom really tried to use it she used way too much of it in a soup and we swore that she didn't rinse the soap out of the pan. But that would've been pretty uncharacteristic of her, so it was probably just the cilantro. On the other hand, I've had cilantro that was a lot milder. And regardless, I think the main thing is just not to use too much of it... if it's just barely there, it's not bad, but it's easy to get too much of it.
The dried seeds actually don't taste like the leaves at all. If you've ever had a Belgian white beer, most likely it was flavored with coriander seeds and orange peel. A few crushed coriander seeds are a delicious addition to guacamole. I actually had those long before I knew the soapy leafy stuff existed or was even from the same plant.

I can tolerate a mild use of it if the other flavors are worth it.
I'm thinking about it...and I have a lot weird tastes and "food rules". There are a lot of things I'm the only one in my family like.
I suppose if I share too much someone who knows me would figure out it is me.

Oh... really?
So like coriander seed is the seed of the cilantro plant?
Hrmm... I had no idea of that.
I LOVE coriander seed. It makes me think of christmas. My mother would always make coriander cookies for christmas.
I only recently found out they were because I was at an Indian restaurant, and I was eating something and I was like "why does this remind me of x-mas", my friend said, "you're retarded, this tastes nothing like x-mas", but my girlfriend said, "coriander, your mother always makes cookies with it", to which the server went, "Wait, what? Really?"

I was going to link the reason I remember that curry contains coriander...
...but apparently it has been scoured from youtube.
In an episode of Minami-ke, this strange guy named Hosaka once heard part of the recipe for curry and went into a sudden trance, imagining himself playing piano and singing as a large crowd is entranced by his glory, as he sings a song:
Subete wa ai no turmeric
jalajalajalapeno!
nakarecha cademum cinnamon cardemom,
murika, paprika, coricoricoriander!
Sakuran shite saffron
chokotto chocolato
imasara garam masala
demo ashita wa arumon
cinnamon, cardemom
oishi curry wo DEKIAGARI!Basically the ingredients for curry with extra random words.
...good times. Wish it was on youtube.

That makes sense.
I just looked up Caribbean curry...
http://mizpepperpot.co.uk/caribbean-curry-powder/
only the seeds not the leaves and as per @lordofduct maybe I am ok with the seeds.
-

So like coriander seed is the seed of the cilantro plant?
Coriander plant, cilantro plant, seeds of which being. Yes.
"Cilantro" is Spanish, and "coriander" is French. In North American English, typically the leaves are called cilantro and the seeds are called coriander, but in other parts of the world the whole plant is usually called one or the other.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriander#Etymology: "[Cilantro] is the common term in North American English for coriander leaves, due to their extensive use in Mexican cuisine."
Hrmm... I had no idea of that.
Relatively few people do.
-
Oh wait... no... it's cardamom.
Not coriander seeds.
cardamom cookies
derp derp derp
-
@lordofduct Thank you, that was really really weird before.

Yeah, I was like thinking, how the fuck does cilantro seeds have such a way different taste...
but they don't...
It's cardamom.
I don't know, I don't have an aversion to any spices that I can think of. It has a weird taste is all I think.
"nom nom, this tastes odd, nom nom nom, pass the blunt why don't ya"
-
@Magus The server going "wait, what? really?" fit into the weirdness that would be coriander cookies, though.
-

How different do the seeds taste compared to the leaves because that seems to be the difference between Caribbean curry and Asian curries?
-
@lordofduct Do you still think it is fennel even though I like licorice? Is it I just don't like the combination? This will help me make sauce I actually like.
I know I'm not a huge fan of oregano or cloves but as long as they are not overpowering they are ok.

For a while, I dated a girl who absolutely hated the taste of onions. She could also tell if there were small amounts of chopped onions in some food, which I always thought you wouldn't be able to taste.
Apparently, there are people who find the taste of onions incredibly disgusting. I hope you never meet one of them, because constantly having to cook everything without onions sucks. They are part of so many dishes and you always have to find a substitute because you still need/want the roast flavors…

Oh wow...that would be hard for me too. I loved cooked onions, I can handle raw ones but love them cooked.

Filed under: I hated onion as a kid but as I grew up I liked it more and more., It sucks that they are full of carbs.
-
@error Yeah, I was even pickier as a child.
I hated half of the food at Thanksgiving. Now I miss what was traditional in my family as my MIL's dinner is a little sparse. Which is funny because she's Hispanic and you'd think Hispanics would like spicier food.
Is that racist?
ETA more.
-
Oh, here's a weird one:
I hate olives. Immensely. If I get a small piece of olive I'll spit out the whole bite. Even when you take them off, the gross overpowering taste remains as a residue.
My dad is the same way, so I imagine it's genetic. Talking to other people, I can't imagine they're tasting the same thing I am. I don't even know what to compare it to, to explain, because nothing else tastes that terrible.
Oddly, I like olive oil just fine.
-
@Karla said in I hate Cilantro thread because why not?:
I know I'm not a huge fan of oregano
I could go on a huge rant about how people overuse oregano. The problem with it is that its strong taste overpowers everything else, and so many people add it to dishes it doesn't belong in and ruin them that way (like bolognese sauce).
By the way, I don't like marjoram too much, so maybe that's what you dislike?
-

Yeah, I hate them too. Don't ruin a salad or pizza with them.
Not a fan of olive oil raw and you really shouldn't cook with it using high temps (high temps alter the oil so it is no longer healthy).

Hispanic
Is that racist?I think that word has fallen out of favor. "Latino" is the PC term (for this week, anyway).
I'm a Texan, so I love some spicy food, especially TexMex. (TexMex is not very compatible with my current diet though. Sadface.)

Maybe...I'll see if we have some in the spice rack when I get home...though it is probably 15 years old so it wouldn't be in prime condition.

Have you ever tried black olives? Because there's a huge difference between the cheap, unripe green olives (which I don't like either) and ripe, black olives, which shouldn't taste bitter at all.
-
@asdf Yes, I've tried them, and yes, they're just as bad to me.
It's not just "I don't care for these, they taste kind of bitter." It's "Uggghh. I need to gargle some Listerine to get the taste out."
I'm pretty well convinced that I'm tasting something completely different than what olive-lovers are.

Black olives are great, so long as they're not pickled or salted when they are prepared.
kalamata or greek olives can fuck right off though. salty nasty landmines they are.

i hates them.
I HATES THEM!

Meh, I am not PC...and most of the Hispanics I know use the word (I live in a fairly Hispanic neighboorhood).
But...I was almost six pounds of Hispanic so I can get away with it.
Side note: At work our main application collects demographic data, you have choose a race and indicate whether or not you are "Hispanic or Latino". So my MIL is white/hispanic, my husband is white/hispanic, and my daughter is white/hispanic and each with a different amount of each.
What is the dividing line between white/hispanic and black/hispanic?
My husband's ex-wife is a dark hispanic - I asked her what she conciders herself. She says black.
Mind you the girls could pass for white, if you don't recognize the hispanic traits because they are relatively fair.Asian - Indians and East Asians are different. Where does Persian and Arabic fall?

They are drastically different. You probably wouldn't even think they came from the same plant.
