The Official Weather Status

Threads are
costlyfree, so let me add another one. This afternoon, my mobile phone rung, and showed me an official weather warning.
Similar to that:
Well, I'll stay at home (except for a short trip to the bakery...), so I can watch the imperial shittons of snow falling while resting on the couch.
-
Same in Oregon. Snow days are fun.
-
Danger to life and limb due to: sudden freezing rain.
-
Status: Mildly annoying

The pub is far away, but I'll be careful.

@Applied-Mediocrity
2 - 4 cm of snow is not a storm
-
@TimeBandit Indeed. There may be some more white stuff, but about the storm it's just weather services (AccuWeather in particular, since local one doesn't mention any) being their usual amount of correct (which is to say, not at all).

Cars are dangerous on black ice.
It’s not a bunch of snow that’s the problem here, but rain above freezing temperatures with a sudden onset of freezing.@BernieTheBernie said in The Official Weather Status:

Honestly, I’m mostly surprised that the warnings just worked. I got the alarm on my phone and apparently no s were involved. The absolute state of the 21st century might not be as analog as I thought.
You could argue that the “extreme danger” contrasted with severity “medium” is a bit of a , but it’s probably not. As far as catastrophe alarms go, “dangerous to drive a car” isn’t particularly high on the list.

Is there any way of clicking the link in the notification?
-
@topspin Ooh ooh, they've finally found water on the moon
-
@loopback0 surprisingly enough, yes. Just hold the notification and the link becomes clickable.

Thought you were in Arizona? Because yeah, Oregon has some fun weather. Best part is that it got just warm enough to slightly melt on top before freezing into a completely slick sheet of ice several inches thick.

Ah yeah, there's that big Intel campus up near Portland. And Portland's about in the worst of the mess. Whole big chunks lost power for quite a bit; not sure all have it back yet. Here in more of the southern Willamette Valley, yesterday was nice and clear (but cold) and today it's started to precipitate again. May be just warm enough to freeze as it lands rather than falling as snow. Which is the worst.
Thankfully it's supposed to dramatically warm up the rest of the week (50s F).

It's not too late! I can be bought for a measly $70k/yr before taxes!

@Tsaukpaetra I like my high uptime, tyvm. Why would I want to pay you to exert your anti-tech field around me and my systems?

It wouldn't necessarily be you who pays.

Why do you show us here the German screenshot? Didn't you receive it in English, too? (I did).
But is that they do not mention the start time of the expected bad conditions - it is this morning, not yet yesterday noon!
-
We're on orange alert.
But in fairness, it's just the sea.

No, why?

It's threatening to be above freezing next week.

@topspin I was surprised to get the mesasge twice - frist in german, second in english...

It’s not a bunch of snow that’s the problem here, but rain above freezing temperatures with a sudden onset of freezing.Same here, we got a weather warning for this reason. Yesterday evening I saw several grit trucks even on fairly small roads, so at least they were prepared.
And, tbh, this morning my (ungritted) driveway was like an ice rink, and that's despite the ground being either very rough concrete or some sort of pebble slabs, so a surface that naturally has a lot of asperities and a lot of grip. It usually needs some real snow (more than a couple of cm), packed-melted-frozen-again, to become slippy, so to get it in that state with just a bit of rain shows the potential danger.
<rant> Other than that, I mostly see other people ing about variations of "it's winter, what do you expect?" but then again, it's the role of weather agencies to warn us (so stop complaining when they do!) and it's the role of road maintenance crews to anticipate this (so stop complaining when they do!). Yes it's winter and yes that happens every winter but that doesn't make it any less slippery, and I appreciate having been warned about it. You think getting an alert on your phone is "too much" but you're OK with getting alerts every 5 min during a football match... </rant>

Yeah - supposed to be -5C overnight here in the Midlands.
-
It's back up to +7C here, so everything's melting off nicely. Of course, the high and the low are basically the same--7C low, 8C high. Although it's still quite slushy, so I'm glad I don't have to drive anywhere today.
It's not expected to get down to freezing again at least this week. For which I'm thankful.

@Parody said in The Official Weather Status:

According to my computer, it is currently above freezing here in central for the first time in a few days — a balmy +2°C. It's not yet noon, so it will likely go up another couple of degrees this afternoon.
-
The trees and shrubs covered in ice look nice.
Taking a good photo is unfortunately not possible now at night.

Just because...

Woo! It's made it all the way up to 7°!
Edit: The forecast (if you think it might be anywhere close to reality) predicts the temperature will drop close to, but not below, freezing tonight. Tomorrow's supposed to be an outlier, with a high of 20°, followed by an overnight low of -2, and 3 more days with highs < 10, before warming into the low to mid-teens next week. weather.
-
Status: Luxuriating in a heat wave for the two seconds the wind stopped blowing

I'll report again in the morning.
-
Weather: The stupid black ice was yesterday (I decided to walk, but that was no fun either), but today the forecast said snow and then back to 7° at noon. Now, reality is snow and freezing, Apple's weather widget an one point says "today's high is higher than yesterday's" and give's a range of 0°-6°, but the weekly overview has today at -5° to 4° and the hourly details only go up to 0° at noon.
Fucking forecast, how does it work? And I had planned to drive somewhere based on the forecast, as I stayed put Tue-Wed and weekend didn't look good either. Not sure if I have to change plans.

From the patch notes of a game I play, published by a Canadian team:
Fixed the Coildrives in the Orb Vallis having erratic pathing, often leading them to drive into walls and drift from side to side. So basically, what you see on the road during Canadian winters.
-
Weather Status: Today was rather cool despite the wall-to-wall sunshine. Most roads clear (i.e., almost all clear with the notable exception of my street) but parking lots and sidewalks were often sheeted with ice, frequently black ice. Going anywhere was quite hazardous!
Tomorrow is supposed to be a little warmer. Which is good; we're having several windows replaced (schedule decided by one key fact: a good sale by a double glazing company who we know do good work). The house is still going to be really chilly...
-
@dkf said in The Official Weather Status:
we're having several windows replaced
This is giving me flashbacks to last year, when the house extension project was in full swing (well if it had been swinging a bit more and standing still a bit less maybe that wouldn't have happened...).
The glass extension was scheduled to be delivered on Monday 19th December. So the masons came to punch two big holes in the wall (where the house was to be joined to the extension) on Friday 16th December (actually Friday + Saturday).
We therefore spent the week-end with two big gaping holes in the house, vaguely blocked by a couple of (undersized) OSB boards and some plastic sheeting. Of course there was a (relatively minor) storm that week-end.
Then on Monday morning, the main contractor got a call from the glass extension contractor and "oh they're not ready for today, they'll come tomorrow..." so one (hopefully!) more day to wait.
Though at least some good came out of that since the masons barely finished demolishing on Saturday so they had one more day to clean up a bit. And the glass contractors did come the next day. But one glass panel was missing from the delivery and only arrived a few days later. But temporarily boarding one window frame was comparatively much easier.

How cute you all talking about single-digit coldness~
-
Status: Uncomfortably cold.
Weather forecast "promissed" sunshine and near zero temperatures today, but it was bad mist all day. And a maximum temperature of -5°C (or 23 left pondian grades).
But the tiled stove delivers cosy warmth. And I still have half a metric ton of fire wood.

The weather here has been warmer than usual with nearly zero snow. Then, yesterday:
That's the problem with having nice weather when you aren't supposed to. When the normal weather finally hits it seems even worse than usual.
