As Hurricane Sameer bears down on the Gulf Coast, many Americans have become confused and reported the hurricane both to the DHS and neighborhood watch, inspired by the "See something, say something" anti-terrorism campaign. Residents have been seen stocking up on ammunition and weaponry, rather than the recommended water, batteries, and canned food. One local man was quoted as saying, "That rag-head ain't getting in my trailer! Let dem A-Rabs come, I'll show 'em the true meaning of Patriotism - the business of my AR-15!"

Yeah, and even more fun, if you don't post very often (like me), you have to recreate your account in the new system.
The import didn't work super well (name length limits, characters being not allowed, and so on) and was mainly intended to keep people from doing things like camping blakey's name as the amount of hissy fit he would pitch over it would probably caused someone to do it.
As if blakeyrat pitching a hissy fit was ever something that we really worried about. -

I feel like this is far too reasonable a statement of the situation.
Oh I LOVE when people are moderately civil instead of being complete overblown shitheads! I LOVE NOTHING MORE THAN THAT!!!
Are people seriously too cowardly to make grotesquely out of proportion demands while attacking strawmen and ad-hominem-ing left and right? What the fuck is up with that? Why does it happen? Goddamned. This forum is the worst, and you all are the worst, and
mikeTheLiarcodinghorror, you're the worst of the worst.

You could favorite posts in CS?

RE: Two forums or what?
Nagesh will be taking your place. He's 50% of your quality
This is the most insulting thing anyone's ever said to me. That includes the time when I was eight, my mom was drunk, and she told me that I a "goddam fucking waste of space" and she regretted "not having to balls to hold me down in the sink until I stopped struggling when I was a infant".
You think I'm worth two Nagesh (Nageshes? Nageshi?)? You'll be hearing from my lawyer.

RE: Hack Discourse!
@apapadimoulis I am probably speaking way too soon, but if I can get a local instance of DC set up and it's not complete gibberish I think I'm going to try to attack some of the more sensible posts from http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/since-this-is-a-beta-i-guess-lets-do-some-genuinely-useful-bug-reports/296 (assuming they're within the realm of possible). I don't know if I'll even get anything done but I'll try.

RE: Hack Discourse!
This seems like a good place for hackers to start: Discourse Plug-in tutorial
That won't work for him. He want to setup the server and play with the deployment of jquery and stuff. How can he host his plugin on try.discourse.org? is there any hope for that?
Nagesh is right. The DC sandbox doesn't give me enough freedom. I want access to the mod tools and whatnot, just so I can get an idea of what's available and how easy it is to change stuff.
-
RE: Hack Discourse!
I might try to set up a local copy of DC this weekend so I can hack away at it. I think it would be useful for the purposes of this exercise. Unless someone has a throwaway instance where they'd give me admin rights and let me fuck shit up.

RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
I honestly don't know yet. I don't see a great way to do it, though I imagine they'll definitely still screw up things here. I look forward to watching the AJAX post loader try to deal with swapping posts after a post that closes many levels of divs and list items hits the thread.
The easiest (read: laziest) way to do it would be to just HTML encode anything that Discourse doesn't allow. But that would make for some seriously janky
threadstopics.Another thought: we have fewer categories here. Are we going to be adding Funny stuff/challenge/et al. to this forum? @apapadimoulis Any input on forum categories?
-
RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
I intend to digest it this weekend, then I'll open a thread when I have a plan of attack. I could probably have the thing mapped this weekend if we just wanted to dump it into Discourse, but I really want to take it further than that. I'd like it to behave within Discourse as seamlessly as possible.
A not insignificant thing to consider - how is all the HTML/CSS abuse going to be ported? A lot of those old threads aren't going to make a hell of a lot of sense if they've been sanitized. Not that the make a hell of a lot of sense as it stands, but it would be worse than it is now.
-
RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
Speaking as a developer though, can we all (TDWTF & Discourse) just cut the abuse / sniping. It serves no-one's interest, and it's not professional.
You must be new here.

RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
I guess, getting the forums up to snuff? I don't know specifically what that involves.
I'm reminded of a half-remember Douglas Adams (I think it was DNA):
It was a bit like writing "end poverty poverty" on the to-do board. Good intention, but a bit light on the specifics.
As @mott555 said a few posts up, if there's a specific set of TODOs I'd be happy to donate some time, but "make the forums perfect for everyone all the time and make it shoot rainbows and give all free handjobs" is a bit of a tall order.
Client: I don't like it.
Designer: What don't you like about it?
C: I don't know.
D: Is it the color?
C: No, the color's fine, I just... can you make it pop more?I think it would be a good idea to have a thread where this stuff was broken down a little bit more. Help us help you.
-
RE: TDWTF Forum FAQ
...I'm confused by this
threadtopic. What exactly is this? Is this stuff that's going to go into the FAQ? Is this going to become the FAQ? What does "always file your posts" mean? -
RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
Offering is easy. I've gotten lots of offers for help over the years. Thus far, @moderator is one of the few who have made it in the "actually emailed me" camp, and from what it sounds like, might make it past the "holy shit this is actually a pain in the ass, and not fun to do" camp. I'm hopeful!
What specifically do you need help with? I'm less than useless when it comes to RoR but I could certainly take a whack at some of the CSS stuff that's been mentioned, maybe even some JS if that's a thing that you have control over. Maybe you should start a
threadtopic where you can post specific requests? -

It's definitely used to make low-gluten breads for people who don't want gluten (AKA idiots) or who can eat a little gluten.
Which is true. Gluten-intolerant people can't eat it, but people with only mild gluten sensitivities can and do.
I don't believe in people with only mild gluten sensitivities. If wheat bothers their digestion and spelt does not, they should be blaming wheat and/or wheat gluten, not gluten.
I think most people don't actually know the difference between gluten and wheat. In their tiny uninformed brain, gluten == wheat. -

There may have been copious amounts of sake involved before the pancake. That might have had something to do with it.

Scallion pancakes? Seriously though, there's a newish Asian restaurant in Harvard square that makes a pretty damn good mixed seafood pancake.

You should be able to repeat the command for multiple tabs. If you want to open a specific tab (say, the 5th most recently closed one) I think you have to go into your history.
