Bah, @mikeTheLiar wouldn't be so stupid to use an email address his mobile keeps polling for registration at the Discourse forum, now, would he?
Seems I was wrong. No, I wasn't getting automatic email notifications. I was AFK doing actual work and came back to this.

Would be a shame if he were actually trying to get some work done...
Not like I was at a client visit or anything.

You're going to need to return it then.

Wow, I did a view-source and there are some gems in there... too many to chose from, so I'll go short and sweet:

I'm really confused by this forum's understanding of time.
Time is an illusion,
lunchtimeDiscourse time doubly so. -
*How* popular is this article?
Apparently this article is pretty popular. Or is it? I can't tell.

That's not a floppy dick, this is a floppy dick.
You can get pills for that now I hear.

RE: What have you built‽
I am seriously consider to change my job now.
Why? I get that making Java applets doesn't make a ton of sense these days, but I've made them in the past and I don't think they were exceptionally difficult.

RE: Closed Poll: How do you feel about Discourse on TDWTF?
For the record, I am not voting on this, so if you see "I want to have babies with Discourse" it's not me.
No need for the disclaimer, we all know that's @ben_lubar.

RE: Closed Poll: How do you feel about Discourse on TDWTF?
TL; DR:
It's okay. Some of my feathers are ruffled but no big deal.
I actually don't have particularly strong feelings about Discourse: The Software. As noted elsewhere, it's just a shift of platform and it will take some time to adjust. I'm okay with that. I do kinda miss some of the CS fuckery that we had, but ultimately that was just abuse of a broken tool - we just found a way to make it (mildly) entertaining.
The fact that the Discourse team showed up to engage us and occasionally acquiesce to our demands was a nice touch... but I don't think they handled everything perfectly. I'm probably about 50/50 on some of their interactions with the community.
And I get it. We're a coarse and thorny bunch. If you're not used to it, we can come across as a bunch of assholes and trolls. And we are - but if you've been around for a while, it's mostly in good fun. Hitting the right balance when you're new to a group of people is tricky, especially when they're throwing insults back and forth at each and 'Liking' them in equal measure.
But new blood is new blood. And sweeping in like "I'm Jeff Motherfucking Atwood, you're a bunch of tools, fuck you you're doing it wrong, my way is best way"... well, let me put it this way. I can call someone a fucking asshole, depending on if I've known them for 10 years or 10 minutes, that statement could be taken in a lot of different ways.
We're not a terribly unreasonable group. It just might take some time to figure out when we're joking and when we're not - and with some of us you can never tell.

RE: Should big digressions be split to a new topic?
Perhaps, but new visitors will come to your town and wonder why your roads are all dirt, why criminals run amok, and periodic fires burn down half the town.
That's actually pretty apt for TDWTF forums.
Then they'll leave as quickly as they can.
Or they realize that they've finally come home.

RE: Should big digressions be split to a new topic?

I can't process information buried in unrelated topics. I can't be responsible for handling feedback about the software we wrote that I can't find.
So if you don't want me to split topics, then keep the meta discussion in meta.
The irony here is that you're all about "barriers to reading". And by sweeping all of the discussions about "things that [you're] responsible for", you're actively creating barriers for the community, in order to make it easier for you.
Of course we're going to discuss this software, that's [in theory at least] THE ENTIRE FUCKING POINT OF THE EXISTENCE OF THIS FORUM - DISCUSSING SOFTWARE. Just because it's your software doesn't exclude it from our discussion.
-
RE: Should big digressions be split to a new topic?
There are lots of places on the Internet, I hear.
Um. Wow. If we had implemented that Worst of the Worst badge I was talking about earlier, I think I would have to hand it off right now.
Seriously though. I actually have an awful lot of respect for you, Jeff. That being said, what the fuck sort of arrogance is this? This is a community that has already existed for almost a decade. Which you joined... oh look, a little over 2 weeks ago.
###STOP TRYING TO FORCE US TO DO THINGS YOUR WAY.
You've already acknowledged that it takes time for a community to adopt a new platform, particularly when it's been using the same software for a long time.
If you don't like the way that we're using your toy, then TOO FUCKING BAD. We're the community, we get to decide how we play with ourselves.
Seriously, go check out the old forums for a little while. http://forums.thedailywtf.com/Forums/. Thread drift is a way of life for us.

RE: Badges!!
I only support a Worst Of the Worst bage if it has a picture of a small bratwurst.
No, that's Wurst of the Wurst.
I suppose I could make do with a "First of the Worst" and allow Worst of the Worst to be more generally applicable.
-
RE: Badges!!
However anyone upon whom this badge is ever bestowed gets an additional, permanent badge to indicate for time immemorial (or until we get tired of Shitcourse) that they were, at some point, The Worst Of The Worst.
This would also be acceptable.
I think we also need a "Made a More Retarded Post than Ben L" badge. I'm not sure if this one would ever be granted though.
I dunno, popular opinion seems to indicate that @codinghorror might have qualified.

A new Rosie for a more modern platform
Continuing the discussion from More Proof that Discourse Sucks:
Do you memorize all your blog posts so you can pull them out whenever, like some other people do with XKCD comics?
Moving forward, I propose that every time the coding horror blog is linked, it's automatically updated to OneBox a video from that part of youtube (you know what I mean).
I'm not married to this idea, I'm open to suggestions. But seriously, Atwood is getting out of hand quoting himself.

RE: Badges!!
First request: A "Worst of the Worst" badge. This cannot be earned, it must be manually awarded. There can only be one "Worst of the Worst" badge holder at a given time. Only the badge holder can pass it on.
EDIT: And I think it goes without saying that I get the coveted "WotW" badge first.

RE: What have you done?!
I've taken a long and circuitous route to get to where I am now, and I've taken a lot of pit stops along the way.
"Carpenter" is a bit of a stretch, but I have certainly spent time working on construction sites near carpenters. Usually carrying heavy shit for them.
I played bass (seems to be popular around here) badly for about a year. When I moved I gave the guitar to my brother, I figured he'd probably get more use out of it (he's a complete hippie, at least he was at the time).
I spent some time dabbling with various controlled substances, which didn't really go anywhere. Not really a growth sector unless you're going to really commit to the industry and it didn't seem like that was the path for me.
I suppose the thing people find most surprising is that I was a cook for just under a decade. Not just slinging hash (although I did that as well), but I spent several years working in swanky, upscale hotels, making over-priced food for snooty people with an expense account. I actually competed regionally on more than one occasion. Although I did well, I never won, mainly because the competitions I entered were won with nepotism (one year the winner worked for one of the judges).
I never rose above line cook, although I had the opportunity. I turned down promotions because 1) I hated cooking for a living and didn't want to commit any more than I had to and 2) this was a union shop and getting a promotion would mean losing all of the benefits that came along with that.

Wow. I was going to say "left thumb" because that's usually how I scroll... but when I started typing this I realized that I've been using my right thumb exclusively. Also, now I'm manually hitting the spacebar and super self-conscious about how I type. Thanks a lot.
