RE: Smart Unit Tests
Yeah. I figure they're using Roslyn for this, and Roslyn is only at the very beginning of it's lifespan. I'm interested in seeing what else they do.

What, you don't like The Space Knights of the Space Round Space Table in Space? I call racism.

RE: Star trek: the animated series has cool aliens (the blakeyrat is watching star trek thread)
At least with LOGH, all I have to deal with is boredom as I wait for the plot to start progressing. I was something like 30 episodes in when I last watched it, and there was a pretty major plot development, so I think the real story is finally on now. It's mostly about two opposing generals, and the politics of their empires. If I knew Japanese well enough, I'd read the novels. Old sci-fi is generally awesome.
But my friends are urging me to finish it quickly, since it's getting re-animated...

RE: Star trek: the animated series has cool aliens (the blakeyrat is watching star trek thread)
A friend has tried to get me started on that. I've watched a bit, and he says it gets better, but the start is cringeworthy to the max.
Besides, he says I also have to make it through Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which is rather epic but certainly long.

Smart Unit Tests
So, today a coworker linked me a video about a new feature in VS2015.
Halfway through the video, my mind went where most of the comments went: "Wait, hold on, these tests will just exercise all the code and say what it does, not identify problems!"
But, like the few sane comments, I can see the positives. Especially when dealing with a massive legacy codebase. If nothing else, you become able to safely refactor. Overall, it's pretty cool. You just need to know when to use it.

RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
As far as ideological wars go, frankly, if you can't defend yourself against baseless accusations because they're not listening, just leave.
I get what you're trying to say, and would normally agree, but this is happening in an industry I intend to join. As I've said before, I intend to release a fighting game one day. The atmosfear around the indie scene is brutal. People are terrified of even attracting the interest of the likes of quinn, because one tweet from her or her friends is enough to have an army camped on your doorstep.
If TFYC can be attacked by 'feminists' for supporting female game developers, and their personal details leaked, how can I be safe? All I want is to be able to finish and try selling my game, and deal with the normal crushing defeat of being ignored.
I really don't know what the solution is, but the more serious parts of GG are doing a good job of keeping it civilized and focusing on writing letters to advertisers to get them to stop supporting sites who attack their own userbase, who delete any comments that support gamers, yet allow 'cut off the balls of all gamers!' and those who allow their reporters to fund the Patreon of people they report on (you wanted money to be involved, you got it!).

RE: Star trek: the animated series has cool aliens (the blakeyrat is watching star trek thread)
Possibly so. Some is animated well, though.

RE: Star trek: the animated series has cool aliens (the blakeyrat is watching star trek thread)
I must point out that DBZ represents animation a couple decades ago. The other you're referring to, .Hack//, is only good in game and movie form. They can't have had much of a budget. Still, you get occasional ones like Beck and Natsu no Sora, which are shockingly badly animated but fairly great.
Now that everything isn't done as cels, animation is a lot cheaper. Anything by P.A. Works is pretty awesomely well done; they like to do things like animate a giant party in some city's China Town (Canaan) or, even in their first attempt ever (True Tears) animate people walking past windows inside a school in the distance.
Then you get studios like Shaft, who animate people talking or moving their heads at an unusually high framerate, but do pans over motionless images for the rest of it.
tl;dr: Animation iz da weerdz

RE: Quoting broken on Windows Phone 8
I think you'd call it immersive/app mode. Of course, the difference will be rather blurred with 10, since both can be in windows...

RE: Today's Laptop Keyboards
I actually rather like Lenovo's keyboards. They're certainly above everyone else's. People rave about how good Apple's laptop keyboards are, but even they don't complain about Lenovo's. I will admit, however, that I prefer to use a proper keyboard.

RE: Quoting broken on Windows Phone 8
Windows Store Apps. The goal is to have the same apps work on 10, and to have the phone and tablet versions of 10 use the same ones. Including 'Windows 8' in the name is one mistake even Microsoft wouldn't manage. Also, I'll try quoting someone on my tablet later.

RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
I'm not offended by the fact that I may be accused, I'm offended that if I am, no one will believe anything I say afterward, and no refutation will suffice.
However, if you think it is acceptable for a journalist to sleep with the person they report on, you really understand nothing. No one is immune to bias, and a journalist's job is to be s unbiased s possible. Grayson crossed that line, and that will remain fact even if you try to call it non-real.
Overall, I just don't want to live in a world where people think it's okay to label anyone they disagree with as absolute scum and cause the torches and pitchforks to come out. Siccing an angry mob at someone for criticizing sarkeesian and friends is just messed up.
-
RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
Quick glance at google says you're saying something about sleds, and therefore must be wrong on several levels.
The reason for my switch to robots is to do with the game mechanics, interestingly enough. Though I can't honestly say I'm not ripping off medarot to some extent.
-
RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
If my worst fears do ever happen, I can at least rest assured that I'll have an interesting response. Namely, that my game, which is likely to be all genderless robots, is actually based on a game with only female characters, all of whom wear rather a lot of clothing. size=8
I'm not really expecting it to be a problem, I'm just unhappy with this added danger. Succeeding as an indie developer is hard enough as it is.
-
RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
Normally I'd agree, but I intend to release my fighting game one day. The characters are (probably) robots, and this was my idea before all this happened. With this atmosphere in the indie scene now, someone will say something like 'My girlfriend doesn't like robots.' and I'll be chased out of the industry with a thousand death threats for being misogynist.
Because proof isn't needed. An accusation will do just fine.
-
RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
I just hate to see people who are actually being attacked actively by the media dismissed as simple trolls.
-
RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
Great, another one of these idiots.
Have you ever heard of The Fine Young Capitalists? How about Wizardchan?
Did you know that GG started when some people on Wizardchan's depressed virgins board swore about how much they hated Depression Quest? One of it's maker's friends linked her there to see the bad things they were saying about her and her game, and so she started up a massive flamestorm against these 'harassers'. She started saying that her anonymous death threats through email and phone calls came from that board, a place for people who are afraid to talk to people on phones. Suddenly, there was an inrush of 'they should all have their balls cut off with rusty butter knives' around the internet, toward a small group of people who just wanted to be left alone.
She labeled them 'gamers'.
When the flames from that finally started dying down, a large number of journalists across multiple sites all wrote articles about how evil all gamers are and how the label needs to be thrown away. How gamers are really just misogynists.
I don't know about you, but as someone who plays video games, I don't like having these things suddenly attached to me. Every time anyone in GG tries to talk about the issues, they get shouted down as misogynists, no matter what they say. They receive graphic death threats.
But sure, they're all trolls. That's the reality of the situation, oh almighty, all-seeing one.

I need to test more thoroughly. Lumia Icon running the latest developer preview, here. The last time I messed with discourse on my phone, it seemed to function, but I wasn't expecting much. I may have ignored all these wtfs.

RE: Seriously, guyz???
Chrome also reloads all your tabs when you launch it, playing all 35 youtube tabs you have open. You can get addons to pause those tabs when they launch, but Firefox's load on demand is a bit nicer, imo.

They're doing good things for WebGL, though. Epic is friends with them.

Google isn't nearly free enough for Firefox. DDG is really more their style.

RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
That's what you get when you bring up questionable ethics.
We'll happily talk about the real issues once you stop being such a misogynist. Actually, all misogynists should just go die.
This response seems to always work.

RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
Its especially bad, considering it all started with women harassing men. They keep trying to tell everyone the opposite.

RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
The Steam group still sends out messages whenever things happen, and I assume Milo is still around. I've mostly started ignoring the messages, because while I support the boycotts, they aren't very interesting.
It hasn't affected me very much so far. If I was the kind of person who comments on the Mighty No. 9 forum, I might be pretty mad now. I did try posting something on Inafune's blog to try to get some sort of message out of him, because Dina won't let anything through otherwise, but my Japanese is awful, and I don't think ANY comments get through there. I'm still not too worried about how the game will turn out, but I'm a bit horrified that you can lose the forum access you paid for by mentioning GG at all.

RE: Star trek: the animated series has cool aliens (the blakeyrat is watching star trek thread)
I think my favorite adaptation is the miniseries for Children of Dune. They did little things like try to show the characters playing cheops (Not well, but at least they tried!).
Horrible acting. But I liked it. It's the best we'll ever get.
-
RE: Seriously, guyz???
It's a Latin thing. X is an ancient abbreviation for 'christ' and has been used in the form X-Mas for a long time.
-
RE: Is Uber the *worst* .com currently?
But if the goal is pursuit of ethics and the group whose ethics are in question involves women, it's obviously misogynist. No one could possibly not hate women if they call into question the ethics of a group that includes women. Doesn't everyone know that?
-
RE: Seriously, guyz???
Say that all you want, but if a new version of Linux came out that wasn't compatible with your GPU drivers, the drivers would get updated to work again. Dell doesn't let AMD do so. Even if they did, Catalyst working is all luck.

RE: Video game spotlight thread
Oh, whats this? Jeff telling me I was doing it wrong?
I definitely quit long before this mode was introduced, but the way skills work and the way physics work were totally different than the first game. That was a large part of the 'impact' I mentioned. But it's cool that they decided to try approaching fun again.
-
RE: Video game spotlight thread
Don't worry, you're already better than Jeff, who inadvertently revealed that he has the same taste in games as he does in forum software.
-
RE: Video game spotlight thread
You'd know if you had. It has 3x the characters and takes 5x the time to kill anyone, because it's supposed to be more like LoL. Eugh. It even looks worse...
Unreal Tournament did it as well, but was much more grim. The fact that they made MNC into something like American football with an announcer who comments on random things and sponsors and everything... All I know is, they got the theme down perfectly.
-
RE: Video game spotlight thread
But the previous one is awesome. It's presented as a heavily commercialized sport, despite being a shooter, complete with a sports announcer.
The second one is MNC rebuilt out of raw, unrefined boring.

RE: Android Lollipop on Tablets
And I just plain don't understand the developers not adapting their apps for Android tablet. They already have tablet interfaces for iOS and sometimes even Windows RT, but not for Android?
AHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHA ahem AHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHA
You are an incredibly funny person. As someone who uses WP8 and a Dell Venue 8 Pro, I can tell you with no chance of being wrong that you are not the neglected one. I'd be happy if neglect was the only problem. As soon as Win8 came out, Valve changed their protocols a few times and only released the API for Android and iOS. Google refuses to allow any official apps to deal with their stuff if they can avoid it. You want anything Google on Windows Phone? Cool, use IE.
And yet the hardware I deal with day by day is apparently far superior, by your description of the problems you're having. I mean, at the very least having a Bay Trail processor lets me install desktop apps if I have serious issues.
If I ever ditch this tablet, it will be for one with a Wacom digitizer.
Windows is .NET, Android is Java. And iOS... fuck if I know, still ObjC?
Probably also Swift or whatever. And negative one on .NET for Windows, because the Windows Runtime is a slightly different animal. But all three can be developed for with Xamarin without too much difficulty. -

Intel Extreme Buggy Graphics are their own can of worms, of course...
And yet they're better at running OpenGL at all than AMD is these days.

RE: Android Lollipop on Tablets
I bought a Dell Venue 8 Pro ~6mo ago, and haven't regretted it, except that Synaptics made the digitizer instead of Wacom. Similar things should be cheaper now.
