My lecturer at university was very sure it would happen someday. I always thought that you'd need to have no idea why products succeed to think that seriously.

RE: Next game in Batman Arkham line
From what I've heard, Americans are quite mild in their regard for sports.
I was in Costa Rica many years ago when they won a major soccer game. The whole city went crazy.
And I hear that in Osaka, Japan, people go to bars to watch a Tigers game (baseball), and whenever someone on your team is up to bat, you sing that player's personal themesong constantly, except for breaks whenever a pitch happens. You do not leave the room while your team (the Tigers, because if you live in Osaka, you'll be lynched otherwise) is up, and you can only talk or use the restroom when the other team is up.
Doesn't sound like fun to me, but apparently Osaka has the best food ever, so I still want to visit someday.

RE: Setting Fire To Sleeping Strawmen (now with extra Toniiiiiiiiiight, you're right, you're right, you're right)
True enough, but you can still have more people in general. I mean really, we've been able to get off the planet for decades now, and all we've done is come back. There are all these movies and such about end of the world scenarios, and all these people worried about the environment. I say, let them have their boring back-to-nature planet.

RE: Setting Fire To Sleeping Strawmen (now with extra Toniiiiiiiiiight, you're right, you're right, you're right)
If I did, I'd volunteer for that Mars mission. After all, in a decade or three, we might start to have a solution to overpopulation that doesn't involve having less people.

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
It's more of a vague hope. It's just a game. I'd like to play it that way if it's possible, but if not, it won't upset me at all. I'm sure there will be other things I can do with the thing once I have it.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Oh? Alright then. Modders love the game? Maybe? If no workable solution exists after the release, I'll play the game properly.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
There are several companies working on getting games that aren't developed for it to work. It wouldn't surprise me if they add support officially at some point, but I'm not betting on it. Either way, I don't feel like trusting beta hardware, so I'll wait for the release.

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
No! I refuse to buy an Oculus Rift before it's done! Noooooo!

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
you first told me my thoughts
Yeah, that was the time that I said... Oh wait, no, the first one was when you decided what games I play. Lets try this again.
I haven't played a kirby game in a few years, and don't quite agree with your assertion. But I'm certainly not a rabid kirby fan, so if someone analyzes it in a way I don't, all good.
And that makes the game a terrible secret because...? I am not connecting idea 1 with idea 2 here, buddy.
Oh wait let me guess, this is another case of you "telling me my thoughts" and you're conflating (somehow?) "hate" with "deny the existence of"? That's the best guess I got here.
- Blakey hates open source.
- Warsow is open source.
- Blakey would likely be annoyed to hear 2, because 1.
- I won't mention it unless he asks, because 3.

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
No; I asked why you played it if it's for 6-year-olds. You're the ONLY one in this thread implying that "for 6-year-olds" and "successful" are somehow mutually-exclusive. Apparently that idea is so strong in your mind that you assume it's in mine as well.
Aren't you the one who hates assumptions? Pinning things on people falsely? How do you know what games I play? What gives you the right to tell me my thoughts?
Ok, now what about War§ow or w§w? Were those also Q2 mods?
The logo uses the § symbol. Abbreviations are things that exist.
Quake 4's on idTech4. There's no fucking way, man. You're living in a cloud of delusion.
Yes, an old game no one likes is on an old engine no one likes. If they released a Quake on idTech5, you might have a point.
Which part of this was the horrible secret?
Well, the impression you seem to be trying to give off is a general hatred for open source. Didn't think that needed explaining, but I'll remember to use small words in the future.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Ah, so you say things that mean nothing. I listed things that are successful, and you said it was for 6yos. Totally irrelevant statement.
And, because you asked:
Warsow started as a Q2 mod.
Then became standalone when the source was opened.
...And now contains no more Id code (really, it's far beyond any of the Quake engines as far as features go).
...And is *gasp, the horror!* Open Source. -
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
ripoff of Quake III
Oh wow. The best part is, the truth would probably make you more angry. I'll spare you.
Isn't Kirby for like 6-year-olds?
What does that have to do with being successful? Next you're going to say that Pokemon isn't a successful game because it's marketed at children, or that WoW isn't a successful game because it's only targeted at people who like MMOs. -
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
When you fall, sure. But when you want to go up? JUMPJUMPJUMPJUMPJUMP.

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
no matter what style of controller you use!
Not a problem on a keyboard, though I've heard of people using mouse2 for it.
Besides, jumping around like a spaz is the foundation of some of the most successful franchises in history: Mario, Megaman, Kirby (double the spaz), Sonic...

RE: 5-year-old british kid passes LSD exam
Well, it's not so much fun to go outside there, since it's raining.
-
RE: 5-year-old british kid passes LSD exam
Yes, but you don't hear the British pronounce that bit either. Though someone in NZ was trying to explain that they do pronounce 'r's and that 're' at the end of words was more correct than 'er' because that's how it's pronounced.
I have a hard time taking linguistic pointers from a place where they pronounce 'barbecue' as 'barbie'. You end up with all these grizzled old guys in short shorts talking about how they cant wait for the barbie. What a place...
-
RE: 5-year-old british kid passes LSD exam
And a good thing we did, or all our place names would be things like Gwddyllywr and Shirechesterchestershirechestershire.
Besides, Brits probably pronounce 'Willamette' as 'willa met'
-
RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
If anything, they should implement that feature and target TDWTF.
-
RE: Video game spotlight thread
The two 3ds versions have been pretty great. The latest is a remake of one I played years ago and still have the strategy guide for (still mostly accurate, even!).
-
RE: 5-year-old british kid passes LSD exam
But, I am! Still, the fact that I read it that way probably has to do with the fact that I find 'wustushu' a funny word (each 'u' should be a schwa, and you have a well known dumb British word that isn't spelled anything like its pronunciation), and the fact that I lived in NZ for a time, where they have such wonderful words as Gisbourne (pronounced 'Guzzbun').
-
RE: 5-year-old british kid passes LSD exam
It sounds British to me, so I'd expect 'glowster'.
-
RE: 5-year-old british kid passes LSD exam
Yeah, no, not ours. Notice, they're talking about MA.

RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
I've pretty much given up on all the people who refuse to use any method of communication outside of Facebook. It's easy for people to contact me on gtalk (and since everyone has an android...), steam, skype/messenger, sms, various websites... But FB is called 'social networking', so I must be antisocial for getting rid of it.
-
RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
I share things on facebook whenever I have the urge to go run and tell someone about something I did
Which is rather exhibitionist of you, no? "Hey guyys, GGGUUUUUYYYYS! CHECK OUT THE NEW BUILDING I BUILT!!!!!" is not something most people want showing up on their pages. It's like forcing spaces in your source code, because everyone needs to see YOUR INDENT SETTINGS EXACTLY AS YOU SET THEM, or they're utterly wrong!...I don't know. It's one thing to have, say, Google post the title of one of my incredibly rare blog posts, but it's another thing entirely to expect people to care about exactly what I eat for every meal and think about everything else I do.

RE: Hungarian Notation Flamewar
Well, then you should use the time-honored
m_c_im_thing
. After all, the more information your compiler already knows that you can put in the name, the better. I mean, it isn't like camelCase things are already supposed to be non-public. -
RE: Hungarian Notation Flamewar
i'm missing all the annoyance of trying to sort through the baby pictures
So lucky... I added one of my former coworkers on G+, and get a constant flow of short videos of his children on my page. Is there a way to not get things from someone without blocking them? If so, Google does not make it easy.

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
If mentioning that it is a Quake derivative does not shine the True Light upon your weak, pathetic soul, naught can be done.

RE: Video game spotlight thread
Dude, if you have a 3ds, why are you talking about vitas? The new Pokemon came out on Friday!
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Was thinking about how my w§w binds would go if I try my 360 gamepad. Since it's a Quake derivative, I'd have to press jump once every 1.5 seconds on average. There isn't any button on the thing that I'd enjoy doing that with...

RE: The Official Status Thread
My chair at home has a maximum adjustable height of 'quite a bit too low'. I really need to buy some insane mesh chair with infinite adjustable parts.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Well, you could have realized that I was talking about your assertion that using a gamepad in competitive FPS was worthless because it was untested.
I mean, no sane developer pits console players against PC players. Yes, that's partly because PC players tend toward higher skill, but it's also because the gameplay changes substantially based on your input device.
You have games like Halo which are designed to work perfectly on consoles: slow, and slightly harder to die. These same things that make them work better on consoles increase the gap between gamepad and mouse+keyboard.
And that's fine. There is nothing wrong as long as the two are separate. But they really can't compete in any way resembling fair.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Ah, so your shoulder aliens told you that I disagree with this. Alright, then.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Look, if you can hit someone in Warsow at 900+ ups while they're below you or behind you, even if they're a bot, you may have a case for gamepads being a sane choice for FPS.
It might work while sniping in CoD, but being good for boring things in boring games doesn't make a gamepad 'good for FPS'.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
The best part is, there are plenty of people who play something like CoD on console and think they know what competitive FPS is like.
But, for the sake of science, I think I'm going to try playing Warsow with my gamepad, just to see if i can make it at all playable.
Of course, I have heard of someone playing it with a steering wheel. Probably a race map, though. And I can imagine proper strafejumping with a wheel, but getting the right angles with a gamepad seems much harder.
-
RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
Generally speaking, when I see someone play a first-person game using a gamepad, I rarely see them aim the camera much while moving. They'll do some, snapping to a new position occasionally. Having tried it myself, I can see why this happens. In third-person games, the camera can adjust a bit based on your movement, which helps considerably.
Then there's the fact that almost all first-person games that use a gamepad force some kind of aim-assist. Overall, I have a hard time taking anyone seriously who thinks a gamepad is on par with mouse and keyboard for first person gaming.
Now, if you have entered a War§ow tournament with a gamepad and been capable of doing anything, I might be able to accept that 'untested' is meaningful in this case. But no one would do that. They don't need to test it. It's stupid.
But as for Skyrim, it might be fine with a gamepad. It wouldn't surprise me at all. As you said, it's single-player.

RE: I'm gonna play Skyrim!
When I first started, I got a bit bored, and then my GPU started acting up. I decided to put it off until the Oculus Rift comes out. And buy a Virtuix Omni.

RE: Long battery name
Not me, though I got a recruitment email today for a four-month contract in the healthcare industry. They seemed to want some kind of desperate, masochistic god to come work under their Lead Developer and System Administrator (apparently one person?).
While I'm sure the story would go well here, I'm a noob - but even if I qualified, I've hung out here enough.

If a name is enough, I hope that happens.
But it's not that hard for someone to say, "Hey, aren't you just GamerGate?", or for all the trolls to swap over as well.
It might convince the media for an hour or so, though.
