It’s that time of year again – the start of it!
Last year I started a drawing in April and retroactively resolved to remember what illuminance and luminance and luminous flux and all that nonsense is.
This year, despite the sayer of nay, I have remembered what illuminance and luminance and luminous flux are, including the appropriate SI and non-SI unit names for all of them,a mostly speedrunning the details yesterday just to make sure I made good on it, and I am resolving to finish the drawing started in April! Maybe even finish it by April!
Happy year of newness!

@kazitor Happy new year, you ordovician impressionist!
-
Have a happy 2020 SP4, you all!
And I sure hope that saying that offloads all the responsibility on you and I won't have to bother

what's the thing next to the glass? gpt thinks it's chocolate, I think it looks like a stingray. when I suggested gpt it was an animal it said it was a horse
The image appears to be a digital painting depicting a spilled wine glass and a piece of chocolate. The wine glass is lying on its side with the stem pointing towards the top right corner of the image, and there are visible wine stains around the rim indicating that the spill is recent. The piece of chocolate is in the lower left part of the image, and it has a bite taken out of it, revealing a lighter interior, possibly suggesting a soft or filled center.
The background of the painting is done in warm tones of yellow and orange, simulating a wooden table or surface. The strokes are loose and broad, giving the painting an impressionistic feel. The wine glass and chocolate are detailed with softer and more blended strokes, while the spilled wine is depicted with more transparent and fluid lines, creating the effect of a liquid spread across the surface.
Upon closer inspection, I apologize for the confusion earlier. The object that appeared to be a piece of chocolate is actually an animal, specifically a horse lying on its side. The horse's head is resting on the ground, and its mane and ears are visible. The wine glass still appears to be spilled next to the horse, with the wine spreading onto the surface. The impressionistic style of the painting initially obscured the true nature of the image. Thank you for pointing that out.

@sockpuppet7 It looks like a horseshoe crab, so it makes sense that the pretend AI that's really a couple autocompletes standing on each other's shoulders in a trench coat would make that mistake

@hungrier horseshoe crab, horse, what’s the difference.

@topspin vs. crap?

Happy New Year from , where the seem to be quieting down after the neighbors have been setting off $1000s worth of (illegal?) fireworks for several hours before the actual start of the new year.
-
Happy New Year! It's been a quiet night of video games here.

It was a bit like the start of WW3 here, but only for a few minutes. I believe its illegal... but definitely tolerated. Pets are a bit less bothered here too, but that's because fireworks are frequent occurrences in this city. They're used as part of celebrating weddings in one of the cultures common here, and are vastly preferable to the likely alternative: gunshots.ldirected skywards. The result is that most pets just go "Oh, it's just those crazy noises again. Whatever..."
At least it wasn't raining. And it is sunny this morning.

We had a brief spurt at 9p (I'm wondering if that was actually Great America...). Then just a couple until after midnight when it ramped up again. Nothing close to July4. And I couldn't hear most in the house - just know about the others because the dog insisted on going out.

It wasn't nearly as bad as when I lived in an apartment in Washington. I used to liken that to being on a beach in Normandy on D-Day (more so on 4 July, but also at the new year). Nevertheless, there were a lot of very loud, deep
detonationsdeflagrations, as well as an assortment of pops, crackles and whizzes.Pets are a bit less bothered here too
Unfortunately, I no longer have any pets to be bothered by the noise.

I don't remember that from previous years (but I think it was pouring with rain last time). New Year used to be really quiet... but the start of the millennium changed that. It's now very much not. New Year isn't the main time for fireworks, but what there is is concentrated into a few minutes (whereas November 5 is spread out).
