@ixvedeusi said in The Belt Onion club:
I don't think many people would recognize any movie titled "Es War Einmal im Westen".
I do, but then, I know there exists a movie from 1968 with that title but in English. Unless, of course, the German title refers to a completely different one — which I would not put past anyone.

@boomzilla There's a theme here of anti-hiking recently.
-
@jinpa it involves movement and who has the energy for that?

People with excess energy should take a hike.
-
@Arantor said in The Belt Onion club:

There was a time when the energy it would take for me to go upstairs (or downstairs) did not even enter my decision-making.

-
@boomzilla Just wait another 20-ish years.
-
:teenager: Wait 20 years?! I want it now!
-
Some teenagers are already pretty cranky.
-
@Zerosquare Cranky teenagers are the cause of cranky parents.
-
And it works the other way as well.
-
-
@boomzilla I am in this post, and I do not like it.
-
@HardwareGeek I never understood the notion of "trying to fall asleep". Either you're sleepy or you're not.
-
Have you never felt sleepy, went to bed, then been unable to sleep?
-
@Zerosquare Exactly. Last night, in fact. I was watching YT videos and couldn't keep my eyes open. I went to bed (too late, because I had to be up early this morning), but I didn't fall asleep for an hour or more, and it was probably more than two hours before I really stayed asleep.
-
@Zerosquare said in The Belt Onion club:

No. If I was "unable to sleep", I would simply get back up. Do you feel sleepy at the same exact moment that you feel unable to sleep?
-
-
@jinpa said in The Belt Onion club:

Sometimes yes.
At other times, no, but I know I'm gonna feel terrible later if I don't sleep now.
-
@Zerosquare I attribute this problem less to "being unable to sleep" than to the boxes we have to fit our time into in modern life.
The man in the boat in the picture above is a member of the Pirahã. They only sleep two or three hours at a time, maximum, though several times a day.

For me, personally, it typically boils down to "if I manage to fall asleep now, I will have slept ~6 hours before I have to get up and go to work, and if I don't, I will have slept x < 6 hours, becuase I have to get up for work regardless of how much sleep I got".
For added hilarity, if insomnia does get the better of me and I choose to simply not sleep, there's still a good chance I'll have trouble falling asleep after being up for 36 hours or more, because the moment of crisis comes when I'm at work and simply cannot go to sleep, and by the time it's possible for me to do so, I'm no longer "sleepy" - as you call it.
-
-
@topspin No, I'm quite sure I've been bird-watching since puberty
-
@Applied-Mediocrity that’s why blue tits have been renamed 𝕏.

You mean the ones whose language lacks a lot of features? Sounds like something created by sleep-deprived people to me.
-
@topspin Now, that bird on your balcony is not a yellow-rumped warbler. It is only a common house sparrow. Also known by the name of Passer domesticus, which is in the family of Passeridae, the order of Passeriformes, and the class of Aves.
-
@BernieTheBernie And you will always remember this as the day you almost caught Common House Sparrow.

I go to bed, properly sleepy and stay sleepy but awake for hours. Sometimes I get 2-3 hours of sleep, sometimes none at all. Next day I'm pretty tired throughout, so falling asleep should be easy. Nope, it's not, same story as the day before. After 4-5 days of this I begin to loose connection to reality and function in sprint-stop fashion to get through the workday. Finally exhaustion reaches critical threshold and I just lose consciousness, more 'collapse' than 'fall asleep'. I sleep for about 15 hours, wake up feeling pretty good and the cycle repeats itself.
Insomnia is a bitch.

It's not that I'm getting old; my brain is regenerating and making room for more information.

Off (??) 2 3 4 ... 12 13, counter-clockwise
With 9 at the top?
-
@topspin it's currently on channel 9. The whole thing spins.
-
@boomzilla huh, that makes sense. So what about starting with 2?
-
@topspin that's just how over the air TV stations started their numbering. No idea why they skipped 1.
(have to wait for some with too much on their hands for an explanation)

They were so busy arguing over who was #1 they stepped in #2.
-
@boomzilla There was originally a 1, and then they reallocated frequencies and didn't want to renumber everything.

Yes. Fans of the same sportsball team, too.
