if the built in keyb and trackpad continued to not work in audit mode....
Yeah if they didn't work in OOBE it would not have worked in Audit mode. It's essentially a temporary bypass to allow system builders to install their shit and prepare a system for imaging, so if it already didn't work at OOBE you would have still needed a USB keyboard and shit to get it working, obviating the idea.

@accalia said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
why did a laptop that had perfect drivers for windows 10 built into the install ISO have so much trouble with windows 11.....
...the laptop had SIGNIFICANTLY above minimum specs for win11
But only one USB port. My old laptop that was built when Windows 7 was new has four.
And weird non-standard hardware that doesn't work with any of the gazillion drivers that are included with Windows.
This is reason #1 why I try to avoid laptops as much as possible and I am still hanging on to my old clunker as long as I can.

Because muh thinner laptops. My newer work notebook also has fewer USB ports than the previous one.
… well, I suppose everybody ass-u-me-s you will be installing it with the docking station and that is a hub with enough USB ports.

Yeah, the trend has to stop. It costs pennies to use a USB host controller that has four ports instead of one. Why they don't fucking do it is an insult to the invisible hand....

USB C connectors should be thin enough even for the thinnest of laptops. I suspect it's more a question of per-unit cost and increased build complexity. Everything physical is expensive!

That rather assumes one has the requisite usbc hardware available, or we'd be getting the rant about all these usbc ports with usba hardware.

You still need one for power, and when you have a docking station, that's the one through that.

blame Apple. they were "Brave" enough to delete the headphone port on their phones, because who uses headphones anymore?
Not me that's for sure.... I dont' use headphones at all.... :rolling_eyes_so_hard_i_get_a_migraine:
then after Apple got away with it they decided that Professional branded devices only need one USB port for power and data..... and other laptop manufacturers followed suit....

Um, my MacBook Pro has 2x USB-C sockets? (It wasn’t my choice, work bought it. Paltry 8GB RAM is a bigger headache for me.)

All Macbook Pros have at least 2 USB ports.

I sit corrected on the count of ports.
Lenovo on the other hand had decided the laptop they'd make would only have one USB port..... for reasons......
/shrug ah well, it's wiped and validated and now off my desk and in the hands of someone else making it there problem

There is some benefit to that though. I noticed that the phones—comparing otherwise similar Šamšung models—without headphone jack are water resistant while the ones with a jack are not. That might be worth switching to wireless headphones.

My Samsung S5A (Stands for "Active") had a headphone jack and was water resistant.

@Tsaukpaetra lack of socket will be more water resistant than with socket.
“Water resistant” is a seriously bullshit marketing term though.

That is me being vague, not the marketing. The product listings use the IP numbers.

Even if they're water resistant to 10m that doesn't mean they will survive a dunk in the toilet.
-
@PleegWat The “ingress protection” is a bit better specified than the old water resistance, so the IPx7 (IIRC the phone in question declares IP67) or 8 should actually mean it will survive a dunk in the toilet.

Fun fact: I once resuscitated a first-gen iPhone that had apparently been recovered from a porta-potty. That's how I watched Twilight.
Yes my living situation at the time was of that quality.

Seperate tagent. Pattinson was pretty good in Tenet I have to concede. So far in my life I've never sat through twilight and I intend to go to my grave having done so.

Status: Yes, Company Portal, I get that it didn't install. But, maybe, I fixed whatever caused it to not do so (i.e. network connectivity) and so want to retry again? Is that an option? No? Okay fine...
Don't bitch at me when you deny me the ability to even pretend to try to solve the problem.

Meanwhile, a Registry tweak can aid in making the Windows 11 File Explorer load large files quicker.
I’m out of the loop here but why is it loading files?
Shoutout to the LS master race.
-
@DogsB said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
I’m out of the loop here but why is it loading files?
When opening a window on a folder it wants to know what sort of files it contains so that it can make up its mind what sort of layout it wants to use. And if those files are images or video, it wants to make thumbnails instead of icons.
-
@DogsB said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

Answer from related article:
File Explorer in modern Windows versions has a system that tries to detect file types in each folder you open to optimize specific options, like default view. This mechanism can cause significant performance issues regardless of your storage type or its speed. Therefore, forcing Windows to "consider" each folder as one containing miscellaneous items should make things a lot faster.
-
Yeah, I guess it's related to an issue I had. I had my NAS off which meant my network drives were unavailable, which caused Explorer to silently freeze when trying to open. Until it timed out and opened a bunch of windows all at once (because click icon, nothing happens, click again etc.) and promptly crashed.
Also, because of Notepad's new auto-open files feature, Notepad would also take an eternity to open as I had a network drive file open in it. But it would still load the contents of that file from its own cache in the end, so why it had to be stupid slow to open at start I do not understand.
