WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else

When you are developping for Windows 11, make sure that the name of the executable does not start with
mosaic

You're up to date but also there's an update

@loopback0 Does Windows 11 still opt you in to beta releases of updates when you manually hit the "check for updates" button?

I wonder if that's what's being indicated here.

No but either way that's a regular cumulative update.

Apparently nobody in that thread has earned their yet, otherwise they would have recognized that Mosaic was one of the very first web browsers. Years later it turned into Netscape Navigator and then Firefox.
Apparently Windows still has some bits of code from the early 1990s lurking about.

More than "some bits", I can assure you...

I remember being very happy to switch to Netscape Navigator from Mosaic because then pages would render while resources (like images) were still loading. Mosaic would wait until it had absolutely everything in memory before showing you any of it, and slow servers have always been a thing.

At a similar time, the Computer Science lab at my college was mostly NeXTs with a couple of SGI machines. The SGIs had Netscape installed but the NeXTs didn't have a (decent?) graphical browser. The more knowledgeable students figured out how to use X Windows to run Netscape on an SGI machine and output it to their NeXT so they could see fancy (but grayscale) graphics. This annoyed the guys doing actual graphics work on the SGIs by eating up RAM and CPU cycles.

Yeah that sucked. Hope you didn't encounter an OOM.

Oh no, one of them wrote about that:
Could it be that Windows is looking for the name of the executable for reasons of competing browsers? You start the Mosaic browser and it intercepts that launch and shows you the "wonderful world" of IE/Edge.
Granted, Mosaic is about as old as the dirt the internet is made of, so...

It was more common to encounter an OOP.

If it takes more than single-digit milliseconds, it's too slow. 2-3 digit microseconds is pretty decent.

@Tsaukpaetra I hate that new menu. Every option is buried in the 'show more options'. Just give me an option to always show all options!

What do you mean? Their team of talented designers working tirelessly and attending as many as four meetings a day to bring you this feature did it all for nothing?

You can do a registry edit to use the old menu instead. It didn't take long to remind me how much I use the context menu.
I should probably switch back to see if any of the programs I use are hooked into the new one now.
Edit: Checked on my tablet. Looks like nothing's been updated to the new system.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

Because you have Skype installed. And one of the first things you'll want to do with any file is share it on Skype.
It happens on Windows 10. There's a registry hack to remove the option, but it gets put back (under a different GUID-named key) with every Windows update.

Yeah I'm thoroughly disappointed they don't let you customize the menu as a power user.
Rather surprised nobody seems to have made a tool to do it either...

IIRC, you can get rid of it and return to the old one.

I installed mini11 on my new tiny under the tv gaming box.
No random annoying shit so far. No edge browser but still has windows store. Practically no notifications or update doing something stupid. No obvious Russian intrusion yet either.
Will report back if something interesting happens.

What?

Apparently I removed the Microsoft Store at some point. I have no use for it and didn't miss it. But just out of curiosity I Goggled "how to install Microsoft App Store".
The instructions are simple:
(1) Run this Powershell command
Get-AppXPackage ... yada yada yada(2) Reboot your computer
Wait ... What? Why do I have to reboot my computer? Jeez. The retarded fuckery never stops.

Technically you only have to log out and back on if memory serves. But try explaining what that means to a luser!

It's probably unnecessary. I can't remember the last time I obeyed some stupid uppity piece of software shit telling me that.
It's the cargo cult method that "fixes everything" about the current state, because everything is fucked up that nobody can possibly imagine all ways the state could be fucked up by something (including themselves).

And it's not just Edge. I had to use Word this morning and I nearly threw a rage fit.
Off-tangent rant: It opened countless stupid and useless pop-ups, e.g. telling me to check the document's accessibility or that its Artificial Stupidity has determined an editor score of 60 (or whatever), automatically creating stupid "alt texts" for images that are about as useful as auto-generated javadocs which I then had to manually remove, and worst of all constantly opening popups when I selected text. Look, if I want a pop-up, I right-click. If I select some text by left-clicking and dragging I don't want huge popups above the text I'm selecting just because you don't understand it. Or double-clicking a word to select it. That used to work, but now I can't do shit because it's popups galore.
Stahp. It.
