@dkf It's funny, we asked the council about it, their answer was basically 'we don't know'. Even though Brighton is firmly cable-friendly via Virgin, and the street is one of the streets that can have it - literally no-one does because the council doesn't know how to enforce the rules or what's compliant.
To be fair it's complicated on this street. There is the road level, which is where it is, then there is pavement level which depending on where you are on the street is 2-4 steps high (because hills). Once you successfully navigate to the level of the pavement you'd have to navigate the front wall (which is part of the ruling because exterior of the property), run the cable across the front garden space and then deal with the fact that there is a 4ft drop from the garden space to the front of the basement flat, and then run it up the wall with splitters of some fashion out to the basement flat, the ground floor flat (which is several feet above even pavement level) and upstairs.
This challenge affects basically the whole street.
-
@Arantor OK, that sounds like it'd be annoying even without the Grade II listing.
-
@dkf Yup, but at least without Grade II you could do it and not have to figure out how to run the cable up without it being a problem.
What I have always been faintly curious about is exactly when the telephone line was put in because that's visible from the outside, and how much effort was required to make that so, or whether it was simply before the street was listed (this came into effect in 1952, which to my mind could conceivably be after the copper was fitted)

The delivery distortion is spreading...

There may well be exceptions for the phoneline, considering BT and/or Openreach are legally required to provide them to every home.
-
@loopback0 in which case can we get 'cable internet of a certain minimum designated speed' be a legal mandate already?
-
@loopback0 just who is "Delivery Nan" and why aren't her grandkids looking after her?
-
@Arantor if only she was defined

Dammit now I need to remember the book.
There was a book I read years ago, I have no memory of what else happened in it (otherwise I'd identify the book without much trouble), but there was a side point in it that the narrator and his brother went to a restaurant called Grannies, whose sole marketing shtick was that everyone working there was a granny.

I'm in this picture and don't like it. I ordered 3 things from Amazon (all prime). Two will arrive by Thursday. The last, a single appliance light bulb (a standard part costing $1.xx), will arrive sometime between Friday of this week and Tuesday of next week. Sigh.

Considering the shit 2 year olds pull off all the time, and the punishments the medieval laws prescribed, it's no wonder child mortality was so high back then.

Yeah, I need to bitch to Amazon about a few things that should have arrived last week.

@DogsB What was the person doing before running afoul of the goose, golfing? If so, good goose!
Edit: After looking at the image full-size, yes, that is definitely a bag full of golf clubs.

Pretty sure that "out there" that's called mansplaining. Which causes even more trouble.
