@boomzilla and yet art school. What a senseless waste.

TIFU (Reddit for "today I fucked up") by trying to clean the dust out of my candle.
This really was yesterday but...
I noticed there was some hair in there, and as someone acutely aware of what burning hair smells like, didn't want to smell it now.
I was using a napkin around the sides and it caught fire.
My dumb-ass was trying to clean a lit candle.
I panicked for a split second then I saw the glass mug I had on my desk.
My husband picks up the mug this morning and I say don't ask.
Seriously, I don't know how people trust me with anything.

I thought you inverted the mug to cover the candle, and then make the bottom of the glass mug dark. :P
Doesn't sound too bad to me.

Ends up 3 joints, a crackpipe, and Bob Saget's dick every time tho. Dangerous, dangerous drug. Pure substances are, on the other hand, pure.

@dcon I've heard that experiment being performed with adults, and I wouldn't be surprised if it had a similar success (failure?) rate there.

had? See the Garage where "experiments" are apparently being done continuously...

Given how many of these experiments involve dangerous substances, the Garage is the right place for them. You wouldn't want to handle them in your Salon.

It wasn't, but if it weren't for the mug, I think the most likely thing I would do is either drop it on the desk or the floor and start stomping with hands or feet. The best outcome of that would be to have burned my hands or feet. The worst...really bad.
In my very cramped NYC apartment, it wouldn't take much for a spark to land on something flammable.

Wet things down enough, they probably won't burn.

Well, if she wet the napkin before use it on candle, it probably won't burn either. :P

I'm not hot on chemistry so I don't know the specifics, but experience tells me some candles do not react well to water.

I think it's "boiling hot wax" not reacting well with water (explosive vaporization like when you pour water in concentrated sulfuric acid).
At normal use, the melt wax on candle is not really that hot and will turn back to solid without further reaction.
-
The event I'm specifically thinking of involved a candle which I can only assume was meant for decoration only.
It became too sparkly for comfort after being lit, and became a lot more sparkly (scaringly so) after a bit of water was thrown over it.
I was only a spectator during the whole thing, but it was a bit of a spectacle.
Fortunately there was no damage, and a lesson was learned.
