Raw Veganism

So of course this is a thing. Just bumped into it through this:

How long before they're no longer full of joy?

Do they also drink raw water?
-
To be fair, it's safer than plain raw-foodism.

It does seem to involve people who are at least moonlighting as raw nuts…
-
is that the Wikipedia article has a section "Possible Advantages", which only states that fruits and vegetables contain fiber. No shit, sherlock, but that's not a valid reason not to cook your food!

@JBert in the Netherlands a mother got a court order to stop forcing her son (12yrs old) to follow a raw veg diet. The son had reduced physical and mental development which was attributed to it. So apparently according to Dutch law the Raw Veg diet is a hazard to kids.

Probably longer than the ones that include raw animal products, because those are most likely sources of pathogens.
Still, many common foods are poorly digestible or outright inedible in the raw form. The early people picked them because they were hard to digest, so they were less liked by other animals, while they could still eat them due to discovery of cooking. So this diet severely limits your options.

With good biosafety rules on farms and in food processing facilities, raw food isn't too big a deal pathogen-wise. The US is rather more lax than they ought to be, and the disinfectants they use — instead of actually not mixing food and filth — still let a hazardous amount of contaminants through. The EU is stricter, and has a correspondingly lower level of food poisoning despite having more of a raw food habit.
Some things are trickier than others. Pork is the trickiest (of common foods), closely followed by chicken (for different reasons).
Still, many common foods are poorly digestible or outright inedible in the raw form.
QFFT!

@dkf funny thing is--most instances of fatal food poisoning (at least the wide-spread ones) in the US recently have been due to contaminated vegetables. Often organic ones that use manure or other "organic" fertilizers.
Pork-based sickness (especially trichinosis, the headline pork food poisoning) have been small for decades.
You get non-fatal poisoning from bad handling in the kitchen, frequently due to cross-contamination or letting it sit out for a while, but really, food in the US is pretty darn safe. Except those vegetables.

Nature itself knows veganism is dumb and is trying to eradicate it.

Of course, who wants to live forever if it's only raw stuff on the menu?

Or eat raw almonds?
How did they possibly manage to fuck up almonds??
-
@topspin Well, there's apparently a (small) risk of food poisoning when eating raw almonds. So, the California Almond Board (fucking California) got the FDA to require that all almonds be pasteurized, with an exception for direct producer to consumer sales.

Mistaking bitter almonds for sweet ones and giving themselves cyanide poisoning?

Apparently, if you're making marzipan then a very small proportion of bitter almonds (1 nut per 100 g of sweet almonds?) is extremely nice. I can't confirm this directly.

@lolwhat TIL that they may rarely contain salmonella when untreated...

TIL that almonds may cause cancer in California but mainly because of the use of propylene oxide as a fumigant (the manufacturer asserts that the residues dissipate, but testing finds them anyway). California, where everything may cause cancer: if it doesn't, they'll add carcinogens to fix that!

I could not say for directly adding bitter almonds (it's not something you usually control as such!), but adding a drop or two of bitter almond extract to, well, about anything almond-based does taste very nice. Especially in sweet dishes, where there is usually nothing bitter, it adds some complexity (?).
