@DoctorJones I nearly did the same thing one night while bowling. My hands were either sweaty or, more probably, covered in condensation from my drink glass. My thumb stuck in the hole and when I went to bowl it didn't immediately come loose. It let loose with a big POP and the ball arched through the air and came slamming down two lanes over. Hard.
My thumb was sore for days. It was probably lightly dislocated before the ball let loose. IIRC, that was one of the nights we were "asked to leave".

The most notable time we were "asked to leave" a bowling alley they had been watching us for quite a while due to rowdy behavior. On the last ball of the last frame of the last bowler when the person bowled another person got the bright idea to roll another ball behind theirs, and another person, and another. Three balls made it. The last one hit the sweeps with a resounding CLANG. Nothing was damaged, but this guy comes running over.
"That's it!! All of you are done!! Get, out, now!!!"
"We were done anyway. We were leaving whether you told us to or not."
"Get out. Now."
"Should we return our shoes?"
"Get out."
"We are leaving, should we return our shoes?"
"I don't care! Just leave!"I don't remember if we returned our shoes and bowling balls or if we just left.
That was a fun night. I think we were also "asked to leave" the next place we went to after that.

@Polygeekery When I was in uni, there was a bowling alley on campus, and a friend worked in it. One night, which happened to be his birthday, he couldn't attend a group event because he had to work. After the event, we descended on the bowling alley at closing time to wish him a happy birthday.
The alley was officially closed, but he turned a couple of lanes on so we could bowl for a while as he finished up whatever closing activities he needed to do before leaving.
On of the guys in the group bounced a ball into the next lane and hit the — somebody above called it the sweep; I never knew the name for it — IIRC, as the machine was scoring the pins after the first ball of a frame. And jammed the mechanism.
The friend was not happy. Not only did he have to deal with the damaged equipment, it happened after closing by people who weren't supposed to be there. I think the impromptu bowling activity concluded very shortly thereafter.

(You probably haven't bowled candlepin, so you're forgiven. ) Candlepin has two things that lead to more pin action: The pins are tall and thin, and you don't clear the dead wood out between balls (of which there are 3 per frame).

It reminds me of the mobile military rocket launchers that were recalled because under the wrong condition they would fire straight up. (Military geeks can correct my terminology.)

Reminds me of doing model rocketry as a child. Usually you'd have to go a fair distance to retrieve your rocket as the launcher wouldn't be totally vertical, the wind, etc... Once it was a very still day and the rocket seemed to go very straight, awesome! And then, no puff of smoke to show the nose-cone ejection charge had fired, bugger, it would come down fast and hard! Could see it getting bigger and bigger and...straight overhead...run for it!!

When we were kids we used to do the same thing.
It really is a miracle that children make it to puberty to reproduce again, considering all the dumb shit kids do when their parents are not supervising.
