And Colin is in Jumanji, so there's that.
For some reason, when I came up with the original question, the first one that came to mind was Ricky Gervais. When I Googled to see if I'd missed anything, I discovered that he apparently made some comments about people in spandex that the Marvel people had an issue with, so the current thinking is that he's not only not in the MCU, he will never be in the MCU.

Contrary to proverbial expectation, shit does not in fact roll exclusively downhill, but follows a complex circulation similar to the water cycle. Of particular interest is the shit : bullshit transition - I should make a diagram.

I left about two years ago, a few months after The Great Upheaval. I just looked at the front page of WTDWTF, and there are no new names.
FWIW

@jinpa said in Random Thought of the Day:

I'm sure the line of authors just waiting to be on the front page is extensive!
-
@Tsaukpaetra You said "authors", so just to clarify, I'm talking about the front page of WTDWTF, not TDWTF.
Unless you've promoted folks writing these kind of posts to "author".
P.S. My browser suggests "Mousetrap" as a correction for Tsaukpaetra. I guess it fits.
-
@jinpa you returned after two years just to give us shit?
-
@DogsB It's said that even if it takes an alcoholic/addict many years to reach a given level of addiction, even if they dry out/go clean, if they relapse, they will very quickly reach the same level of addiction they had before they dried out, even if they were clean for many years.

Precisely.
There doesn't seem to be too much in the way of new blood finding their way here as of late, despite how much Google loves us.

So, welcome back.
You stayed One Of Us.

Thanks to Germany using a QWERTZ keyboard instead of QWERTY, if you typo "the" as "zhe", people will automatically read it in the correct accent.

@Applied-Mediocrity let’s say Unity, because they’re doing their level best to push game devs out the door/wall (dwall?) because their CEO (who is the ex EA CEO) is all about the “if you’re not monetising your player mid gane you’re an idiot” now that Unity just merged with a company that made malware installers.
Here's a much better take on what's been happening at Unity:
-
@Mason_Wheeler Oh no, young Skywheeler. I think you will find that it is you who are mistaken, about a great many things.
The problem is that mobile markets are already festering, rotting, pustulant, putrid and fuming garbage pits of adware and spyware, and general creative bankruptcy. And if you contribute to any of that stupid monetized crap in the first place, you're a fucking idiot, and I want nothing to do with your stupid shit, you evil motherfucker. And Unity has latched on to that market with both hands to profit from it.

@Tsaukpaetra and yet he still wins in the end.

Any organic chromoceptor will detect colors biologically relevant to the organism, regardless of organism scale, since the scale of the chromoceptor will be in the domain of the organism's metabolism and determines the color detected.

I hadn't noticed, but I suppose it is.

Random thoughts, biochemistry and nutrition category:
There are three classes of substances in foods that contribute calories to the diet: fats, carbs and proteins. A gram of fat provides nine calories; the other two provide four calories per gram each.
If you look at the chemical structure of each class, you'll find that they spread out in different directions from a common point, with the hydrocarbon chains on the end of each molecule growing longer the farther you get from the center of the encompassing class.
That center, the common ground for all calorie-containing foodstuffs, consists of alcohols.

@Tsaukpaetra he's really good at being a metaphor. Some days he's even a simile.

Superhero movies and comics (as well as most shonen anime), while they have flashy visual effects and lots of property damage, really come down to just punching each other until someone gives up. Sure, sometimes they're punching with laser beams, but those don't really act much different than someone's fists. And they're hilariously ineffective--they might as well be hitting each other with wet noodles.
-
@Benjamin-Hall which is why M Night Shyamalan’s trilogy (Unbreakable, Split, Glass) is actually amazing and completely worth watching as a superhero trilogy that doesn’t act like a superhero trilogy.

Well, maybe the not-so-futuristic cars. Those are period accurate.

The 6000 SUX got 8.6mpg. Sounds like rookie numbers to me.
-
@Arantor Is it okay if I don’t remember Unbreakable much and still watch Split and Glass?
-
@stillwater yeah, there’s enough backstory dropped in Glass that you can watch it without having watched Unbreakable. I don’t remember how much Unbreakable features in Split though.

JKR stole the Fawkes scene from Futurama:
Fawkes swooped down in front of Dumbledore, opened his beak wide, and swallowed the jet of green light whole. He burst into flame and fell to the floor, small, wrinkled, and flightless.

Elián Gonzalez is 27 years old.
Jessica McClure (aka "Baby Jessica", the girl who fell down a well) is 35 and has two kids of her own.
Two and a half weeks from now, JonBenét Ramsay would have celebrated her 31st birthday.
The other day my wife was watching the movie Home Alone on TV. Macaulay Culkin was 10 years old when that movie was made. He is now 42.

@Gern_Blaanston You are responding to a post which is more than one year old. After it was posted, we've found the budget to create a dedicated thread: https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/28139/the-belt-onion-club/
That thread too is more than one year old. It was created about a month after the post you're replying to.

I think that's better than a lot of tanks, especially ones with turbine engines.

From the "wanna feel old?" file:
The final "Far Side" comic ran January 1, 1995.
The final "Calvin & Hobbes" comic ran December 31, 1995.
The final "Peanuts" strip ran February 13, 2000.

On a related note, when ordinary bad guys encounter the superheroes, they're remarkably persistent in fighting them. Now, if I was a bad guy, and I encountered someone who had remarkable abilities, I think I'd turn around and run. But most of the bad guys keep fighting.

But is that actually "The Far Side" strip if the strip is no longer running in newspapers?
I considered including "Bloom County" in my list of strips that have been gone for longer than people realize, but apparently there's been a revival.

Stan Lee first considered "Fly-Man" for a superhero after watching a fly crawl up a vertical wall. Later refined the idea to "Spider-Man" and history was made. Still later "Ant-Man" was added to the litany of bug-related heroes.
Can you just imagine if he had known about tardigrades?
