oh and just before someone trotts out this idiotic "Those who can't..." again (I dare say that most of the guys saying this would go under horribly in a classroom), our vocational schools are coupled tightly to the industry (pupils are 2 days at school and 3 days at their job) so if the teacher doesn't know what he's doing, this would be found out really fast. And acted upon.
One wonders why they sentence themselves to teaching if they could easily find a much less stressful and much better paid job in the industry.
First of all, teaching in Germany is rather well-paid in comparison. It's also (usually) a secure job. The big filter is the 18 months of training after university (really stressful and where most drop out) - if you make it through that then you can lean back a bit.
Plus, some people actually like to teach.

@Rhywden said in Right to repair sold to the highest bidder:

If that's true, then it explains everything. "Those who can't, teach" was formulated in a country where this is NOT true - where the industry pays MUCH better (which is the case in most western countries). When the industry pays so much better than education, everyone worth their salt chooses industry, and the only people who pick education are those that couldn't make it into industry. If situation in Germany is different, then of course this saying doesn't apply.
I wish my country paid the teachers the same as they pay the industry. It would bring so many benefits in the long run. But our politicians are too busy throwing money away to buy votes and there's no money left for anything actually good.

My apologies.... i seem to have gotten triggered and started in on a blind frothing rant.... this is not acceptable behavior for a fox. Not least because if we're seen to froth we will be shot as rabid. It's true. my Sister was in a frothing rant about healthcare and she was shot and killed because a passing hunter thought she was rabid.

@TimeBandit I guess people should deal with this by not getting $1000 phones in the first place. Or that's been my solution at least.
-
@dkf I'm currently using a Pixel XL that I bought used for $120 CAD about a year ago.

Ditto. A few weeks ago I picked up a Google Pixel 3a for ~$300; until then I was using a Nexus 5 I bought for ~$400 in 2014.
You should, however, be able to get things repaired without having to go through the manufacturer (if at all). I'd like it if they went back to removable batteries too, but that seems unlikely. :(

Don't worry, at the rate Google are removing features from the Pixel the next one may not even have a battery.

Just keep cranking it (as silently as possible) when you call.
Oh, also keep cranking if you want to be called.

Actually that's not true. These use power provided by the phone line.

@Zerosquare That makes me think how phoning people is adapting. With AI assistants, you can still (theoretically) say "Operator, get me Joe Schmoe" and have things work. Or find that it has gotten confused and you've called Laura's "Special Massage" Service again...

uhhhhhhh,......
wat?
just...... wat? no. you do not do that to the women, and men who are RISKING THEIR FUCKING LIVES IN SERVICE TO YOUR COUNTRY! you do not prevent them from having properly functioning equipment, you do not stop them from repairing the equipment that keeps them safe, keeps them alive.
No.
Just no.

I mean, yes. but doubly so for the military. you do not fuck with the lives of those who risk their lives in service to you.

If it was unregulated, anyone could do whatever they wanted to the materiel. If parts were made to be unserviceable, others could freely produce serviceable parts and sell them.
-
@Carnage If it were regulated, it'd be illegal(-ish) to put chips in parts that make the machine not work.

with an ideal, optimistic regulation generally unlike real-world ones, it'd be illegal(-ish) to put chips in parts that make the machine not work.

One of the natural endpoints of unregulated capitalism is a society based on the principle of rent extraction.

I've heard that it's a saying of who does what on a subsistence farm: if you can work, you work. If you can't work (i.e., you're just too damn old), you teach the next generation. Getting healthy people to teach while the infirm try to work is a recipe for starvation.
But that's probably a rebuttal, rather than the original definition.
