And ofc there's an asshole who's not renewed his bus pass ahead of time and did it on the bus, with no consideration to wait until everyone else was on forcing several people to stand in the rain while he was sorting that.
Here, we have ATM-like machines where you can buy tickets/renew your pass, but those are not on the bus
-
@TimeBandit Our bus drivers can sell simple tickets (single trip / whole day) but for everything else they'd tell you: "Go away, you fool, and bother someone else."
But you can also buy tickets either via Internet or through an app and get a 10% discount in the process. If you don't have a smartphone you can order an NFC chip card you can use to pay with (and also get the discount).

"Encouraging"
I was more struck by "significant".
I did not know that the DC metro system had so many tunnel fires, even after years of remedial maintenance, that they could perform a meaningful statistic analysis on a year's worth of tunnel fires based on the weather.

Life is full of happiness when you set your expectations low enough.
Oddly, my expectations have followed a steady downward trajectory throughout my life, but my happiness has not followed a similar upward curve.

@izzion You're joking, but some people here want to have free public transport for everyone (and some small cities actually already do it)...
I knew a city councilor who was pushing to have car insurance be subsidized.

Autonomous cars won't get you to your destination any quicker though, it will only make it possible for you to do something else while the car brings you there.
You could take an Uber. Then you'll notice it isn't that useful, because doing anything in a moving car sucks.
Unless you're one of those very rare people who aren't affected by motion sickness.

We had a crazy amount of rain today.

So... Yesterday when going home from work I ended up behind a prime asshole. He wanted to put money on his bus pass, put on the minimum amount and then paid for the bus ticket which is just a bit less than the minimum amount. So instead of just paying with his card, he first had to pay with his card and then pay with his bus pass, giving the driver extra work and making it take extra long for him to get on the bus. (Yeah, there is a 10% discount for paying with your bus pass, but not actually putting enough money for a few trips is very .)
And this morning I got some headache from sitting in front of a dumb bitch. She was on phone with a friend. Also put the phone on speakerphone so everyone around could hear the conversation ofc. And all she said was constant whining.
: Why is this bus stopping at this bus stop? I mean, seriously!
: (Maybe to let off passengers wanting to get off here?)
...
: Oh my god, this bus is running so late!
: (What are you talking about? The bus is running right on schedule right now.)
...
: I hope it wont get stuck at the red light! It got stuck at the red light! And when her friend on the phone didn't respond for a bit:
: Hello? Are you still there? Do you hear anything I'm saying?
: Yeah, I hear you.
: Did you hear what I just said?
: No.
: Then why did you say that you are hearing me?Well, I understand why her friend would tune out as everything coming from the person behind me was a constant stream of whining. And what was coming from the phone was 90% wind noises (it's a windy day today) and 10% "Yeah." as responses to the whining.

@Atazhaia The other day I boarded a train, and someone at the other end of the car was listening to loud music. Like, not "concert in public" loud, but you know, speaker rather than headphones. Not ear-splitting but kind of baseline level annoying in public transport.
And then... a miracle happened! Just as I walked into the car, someone went straight to the guy and politely asked him to turn off his music, and he did so without complaining!!!
There is still a glimmer of hope in this world.
-
@Atazhaia I've actually butted in on such phone conversations in public transport a few times. I lack most of social competence expected of normal humans, and the brain/mouth filter is severely lacking. And I was born without shame.
So, when people talk loudly I just join the conversation if I find it annoying, and try to get them to talk about something interesting instead.I've actually met some interesting people that way.

(My adaptive cruise lets me vary how close it will come to the vehicle in front, from over 2 seconds — very comfy, for when roads are nice and quiet — to somewhere close to that 0.8 seconds — when I want to be aggressively close in heavy traffic.)
At 0.8 seconds, physics takes over and if the car in front stops suddenly you're buying a new radiator.

Those people need to be euthanized.

Speaker phone in public spaces?
Euthanasia is too kind. Make them eat the phone.

On my commute (almost entirely highways), 0.8 seconds would be way above average.

At highway speeds, instant dead stops don't happen. The good thing about adaptive cruise is that it doesn't get bored and stop paying attention.
-
@dkf I also suspect (hope?) that it has way better reaction time than human drivers (somewhere between 0.5 and 1 s if you're perfectly focused IIRC, and probably more than that in real situations).
It might also be better at judging how strong it needs to brake, I think I've read that humans tend to underestimate that and not brake strong enough early enough (i.e. they start by pressing the pedal a bit, and only when they see it's not enough, they really floor it -- by which time it's probably too late, whereas braking more strongly from the start would have worked).
Overall, on highways and normal traffic/weather/etc. (i.e. a very controlled environment), I would tend to put much more trust on adaptive CC than on any human driver.

Well, not by braking, at least.

@dkf It doesn't have to be an instant dead stop. If you are behind me - even on adaptive cruise - at 0.8 seconds behind, then if I brake lightly you will hit the back of my car.

@frillunflop Same, which is why I have to keep buying new tennis balls to pop over the tow ball.

You need half a bottle of proper absinthe rather than coffee.

Winter is coming. Today the bus was 10 minutes late because they needed to thaw it out from the frost before it could leave the garage.

@Atazhaia SJ is fun. During winter you never know if the trip home will be 30 minutes or 6 hours.
