Scrolling is stupid

Step 1: Find a post without an embed or image, below a few with embeds or images. It's quite easy to find them in the Emergency Cute Things Thread. Not all embeds work with this.
Step 2: Click its timestamp. You will go to that post.
Step 3: Wait a few seconds.
You are now on a different post.

You have discovered JELLYPOTATO
-
@ben_lubar Interesting, then, that nothing of the sort occurs in Discourse.

I-- what?
You do know that the term jellypotato was invented on Discourse, right?

Unpossible. Discourse can never do so wrongly.
-
@ben_lubar No, I mean this specific behavior.
-
@pie_flavor said in Scrolling is stupid:

Yes. That specific behavior is what created the term "Jellypotato" around here. On Discourse.
-
@sloosecannon It doesn't happen there.
-
-
-
@hardwaregeek Well, I've seen all sorts of wild and woolly embeds on Discourse, and I've never seen it happen. Meanwhile, I see it every single day here.
-
I don't see how "well Discourse shit the bed so this isn't really a big deal" is a valid response. fact is that nodebb is incredibly buggy, and unless Old Discourse is the level of quality that people are OK with then things will have to change.
-
So what I'm hearing for the 47th time (if my counting is accurate) is that iFramely embeds should be disabled and linked images should have their dimensions cached?
-
@tsaukpaetra No, because iFramely embeds work just fine on Discourse. Therefore, it is absolutely possible to do correctly.
-

Except, embeds aren't provided by iFramely on discourse...
-
@tsaukpaetra Well, whatever does the embeds then. I dunno. I don't need to know the technology behind it. Discourse does it right and NodeBB does it wrong. The solution is to do it right, not to not do it at all.
-
@pie_flavor said in Scrolling is stupid:

Would it surprise you to know that posts are rendered on the server before they're sent to the client? ;)
-
@pie_flavor said in Scrolling is stupid:
Discourse does it right
Nope.
@pie_flavor said in Scrolling is stupid:
NodeBB does it wrong
Yep.

It's not a valid response to me either. But Discoevengelist pie_flavor likes to make every bug report a "well, Discourse doesn't do this" thing.
@pie_flavor: We don't care that your specific install of Discourse never has these problems. We don't care that you think it "does it better". We've experienced Discourse too, and grass really isn't greener on the other side. Discourse has just as many (if not more) issues, in our actual, real world usage of it.
If you're going to keep turning every bug report into a bug measuring contest, you're gonna keep getting negative reactions to things. It would probably be better if you just don't mention Discourse at all. Reporting bugs is fine, but stop comparing NodeBB to Discourse.

Including one insurmountable issue, even if we wanted to go back to Discourse. We would be completely unable to get any support from CDCK. Because "No longer welcome here."
-
@hardwaregeek said in Scrolling is stupid:

Though I wonder how smug he would be if he perceived we were considering coming back. Would it be entertaining? Would it be acidic? Would it foster discourse? Hmmm....
-
@sloosecannon My specific install? I don't even see these problems on meta.d.
-
@pie_flavor Meta.d is vastly different from TDWTF. Meta.d doesn't have topics with thousands of posts. It doesn't have a lot of embedded content. It doesn't have topics with thousands of posts of embedded content. TDWTF does. TDWTF will see, and has seen, problems that meta.d will never see. But of course, since meta.d doesn't see them, the problems cannot possibly exist.

I'm sure it would foster the users being banned for an additional 200 years.

Topics that cause problems on meta.d get disappeared.

You're confusing it as a response to "this is a bug" and "Discourse doesn't do this." It is a proper response to the latter.
-
@pie_flavor said in Scrolling is stupid:

Ok now. Mocking people who have an intellectual disability by mimicking them it not ok.
-

Who said that?
What we're saying is that @pie_flavor doesn't have critical thinking skills. And that's sad.
-
@jazzyjosh because every one of their bug report threads looks like this:
nodeBB does this
discourse is a fucking this too
not anymore
well it was, and also bullshit
-
The whole NodeBB vs Discourse nonsense is getting pretty tiresome. No wonder nothing around here gets fixed, everyone's too busy arguing.
-
@erufael That never happens with Discourse, of course.
-
@pie_flavor said in Scrolling is stupid:

Yeah, discussions get nipped in the but by banning the ticket creator and deleting the
ticketthread
-
I've been having a lot of fun with infiniscroll. It's certainly more convenient to get the massive page-load wait once instead of twelve times (or more, goddamn trolleybus threads). This is moderately offset by the fact that I routinely completely skip about five posts or so when the infiniscroll loads the next content. And I don't fucking notice because I'm just scrolling and don't know where the scrollbar is because NodeBB hides it for some stupid reason. This happens even in threads without any oneboxes.
See if you can guess what forum software doesn't do that. Go on, guess.

Discourse is just another pronunciation of wrongly.

I always reply to rhetorical questions like this like Emily from Devil Wears Prada: "'Wish me luck!' 'No. Shan't.'"
Unfortunately I can't find a YouTube clip as example.

Oh, I know this one! It's phpBB, right?
-
@scarlet_manuka Well, I was going for Discourse, but you're absolutely correct. It is literally only NodeBB which does this.

Lately, fullscreening videos works fine the first time, but when I exit out of them, it's scrolled to the top of the currently loaded post set instead of where I was, fuck knows why. After that, if I try to fullscreen the same video again, it'll last for about two seconds and then reload the page, but put me in the same location as before.

Of all the things to be reproducible on mobile...
