Twitter developers are total fucktards

- Go to Twitter.
- See some video.
- It autoplays even if you don't want to see it.
- Moreover, it autoplays muted, so in case you want to see it, instead of just clicking it to play, you have to first unmute it and then hunt down seek bar and rewind to beginning.
- Moreover, when you pause video, switch to another tab, then go back to the video, it resumes playing on its own. You might not notice at first, because it resumes muted.
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with Twitter people? It's not even funny anymore. They crossed the line of gross incompetence and are outright hostile to users. And people still use it!

Some people/organizations have dealt with this by putting captions in their videos, so people watching silently on Facebook/Twitter/wherever would still get the message. So overall, much better for everyone than just not autoplaying the video in the first place.

It's much better than autoplaying a video with sound.

I don't see any argument here in favor of autoplaying vs. not autoplaying. Just that content providers invented a workaround for the problem that wouldn't exist in the first place if Twitter behaved sane.

I've come to greatly appreciate that.
On that note, it seems we've gone full circle from enjoying silent films to enjoying talkies, back to enjoying silent films again. Charlie Chaplin would have wished he had preserved his body in a cryogenic solution to witness this.

There wasn't one, I was ironically agreeing with you that it shouldn't autoplay at all.

I almost always read Twitter on my phone, and I have that set to not autoplay videos to reduce bandwidth usage. Seriously, I don't actually need to watch most videos of cute puppies doing silly things that people put in my feed…

@bb36e all it's missing is 9gag and funnyjunk watermarks.
-
As I've said before, "by Twits for Twits."
-
Except if you try to play a video in a tweet embedded in some other site, in which case "The video could not load". (at least for me)
Or try to play a video (or even view a tweeted picture) in the Twitter Windows 10 app, in which case they would randomly fail to load

Of course that only works if you have an account.

But not nearly as good as not autoplaying at all.

Anyone who creates an autoplaying video should have their eyelids cut off, so that they can see every detail as they are slowly, piece-by-piece, fed to a ravenous bugblatter beast of Traal (and so they can't close their eyes, thereby causing it to think it's gone blind).

@gąska actually, up to point 4 (including) it kinda makes sense. 70% of twitter videos i watch only because something in it catches my interest, wouldn't happen if i only saw a thumbnail obscured by a huge play button.
remaining 30% which i decide to watch (as opposed to randomly coming across them) are basically used as longer, higher quality gifs - showcases of shaders, animations and 3d models people made. so no sound in those.
#5 is completely stupid, though

PEIYCF
... dammit, that's a stupid acronym =D
problem exists in your choice of followsdammit, that's still a stupid way to say it.
to someone not versed in twitter terminology, it probably wouldn't even sound like a sentence that makes sense =D

Hmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder what's the main issue here.

Nah. They also say interesting stuff, and I will watch if they've dressed the puppy up in a Cthulhu costume…
…
What?

Given your name, that comes as no big surprise.

This kind of shenanigans is exactly why I disabled autoplay in Firefox. The only thing I don't understand is why that is not the default setting.
-
@gąska said in Twitter developers are total fucktards:

Network effect: everybody uses twitter because everybody's on twitter. Once you've reached that point, your app can become astonishingly shitty before you start losing a significant amount of users.

precisely thanks to the autoplay, there's no issue.
there would be an issue in case there was no autoplay, and that issue would be the lack of autoplay.
-
@sh_code from what you said earlier, it seemed to me that you like autoplay because it removes the giant play button that covers thumbnail. There are other ways to get rid of giant play button - for example, get rid of giant play button.

giant play buttonthe stupid video I have no intention of ever watching.FTFY
-
Yeah, that's incredibly stupid. They could at least make an easy button to unmute and start playing from the beginning (or wherever the fuck it was paused at, if it had resumed automatically).
-
@gąska no, i like it, because (specifically twitter, but also in general) video thumbnails usually tell you nothing, so the thing that tells me "i want to watch this whole" is what i glance happening in it while it autoplays as I scroll past.
