Why tipping is a scam

I think most of the Guantanamo guys have it pretty good these days.
i think it still heavily depends on which side of the bars your bed is....

For a variety of shitty socioeconomic reasons it's legal to pay wait staff far less than minimum wage in my country of residence, so the restaurant owners do.
Wouldn't fly in the UK; the minimum wage applies equally to everyone, regardless of occupation

good for you! i wish we were the same.

TECHNICALLY this shouldn't fly in the US either. Most places that have the "tips = wages" rules state that if your tips plus a really lowballed hourly rate doesn't equal the federal minimum wage, that your hourly rate is to be increased to at least match that.
The problem comes with businesses that do all kinds of shady shit to get around that, like "pooling" all the tips, doing the math with that number, then dividing only a portion of that to the people who are getting paid that way, or some shit like that, that nothing short of a full IRS audit is likely to uncover.
-
@Jaime said in Why tipping is a scam:
Everyone else gets minimum wage
If a waiter or waitress claims to be making "minimum wage" (or less), there are only 3 possible realities:
- they're an absolutely shitty waiter/waitress
- they work at a total dump of a restaurant and should find somewhere better
- they're lying
They love to bitch about bad tips but when it actually comes down to it, they get tipped a lot more than they'll admit. Case in point:
@Jaime said in Why tipping is a scam:
They brought this on themselves. Several years back - when most customers switched over to using debit cards instead of cash - the IRS noticed something. If you take all of the claimed tips from just those orders where the tip was paid by card, it added up to more than the sum of what all of the employees claimed as tips. If you, as an industry, habitually under-report income, expect new tax laws that are not in your favor.
-
I much more prefer the places where there are no waiters, you come to the counter, pay up front and bring the food to the table yourself. More pleasant for me, for the restaurant employees and less waiting.
-
@Adynathos Plus they have little plastic toys for the kiddies.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah that place too - whether their food is toxic or not, at least it is easy to buy. But I also experience this model of sales in my university canteens, asian bars, etc.
-
@accalia said in Why tipping is a scam:
think that writing their phone number as the tip with the message "call me for some 'D'" is a proper tip.
Well, in all fairness, that would be a tip.
-
@Jaime said in Why tipping is a scam:
And I don't tip people that I respect (plumbers) because it's not part of the norm. I do tip waiters, but I don't respect them any more (or less) than any other random person. I find it weird that respect factors into the decision.
Where in the hell did I say anything about tipping plumbers in my first post? Where is this coming from?
I don't tip plumbers!!
Of course, that is a job that I actually will do, and sort of have done. But I am not drawing a connection.

@Polygeekery said in Why tipping is a scam:

Never said you did. You said you tipped people because you respect them. Since I have no idea whether or not you respect plumbers, I cannot make any assumption about whether you would be tempted to tip them. I mentioned plumbers as an example of someone that I do respect and that the fact that I respect them doesn't compel me to tip them. I brought it up as an example that respect doesn't lead to a tip.
I also said that I don't particularly respect waiters, but the fact that I don't hold them in any special regard doesn't prevent me from tipping them more that I tip people of any other profession.
Both of these were examples of respect not correlating with tip amount. One show respect doesn't cause a tip and that other showing lack of respect doesn't mean I won't tip.

What if that plumber is a lady plumber and wears a tie?
-
@MathNerdCNU Plumbers don't wear ties.
Seriously.
If I put a YouTube URL in a link, the link's text is ERASED and replaced by the YouTube one box?
Seriously?
Whoever asked for this onebox plugin to be turned back on: FUCK YOU IT'S BROKEN SHIT

If she's sexy enough, I will give her the tip...and more.

No. Again, I said I tip well because I was taught to respect those who do jobs I can't or won't do. I tip well.

You are hinging your argument of the qualification of "well"? Nearly all of my statements said that it influences your tip.. going from tipping to tipping well is "being influenced by".

OK, this is the last time I will explain and then I submit to the gods of pendantry.
I tip well because I respect those who do jobs that I can't or won't do.
That means that I tip well, those that it is customary to tip.
That does not mean I tip plumbers, or trash
menpeople, or any other people that it is not customary to tip. But I do tip well. That is all that it means. Nothing more. I tip servers well, because they do a job that I both can't and won't. There is no hidden meaning. No other bullshit. Just that.
-
@Polygeekery He's not even disagreeing with you

@loopback0 said in Why tipping is a scam:

Who fucking knows, considering that he was implying I tip plumbers.
I don't even hire them. I do that shit myself.

If tipping is a thing and you can't afford to tip then you shouldn't be eating out.

So you leave Mrs P to tip the plumber then?
-
@blakeyrat said in Why tipping is a scam:
The problem is, they don't hand the iPad to the customer, they keep it mounted behind the counter-
There's a burger joint up the street where I work that does that, but it's in a stand that rotates. After they swipe your card, they turn it so it faces you, and you can tap buttons for 10, 15, or 20%, or choose your own.
-
@boomzilla said in Why tipping is a scam:
If they charge a delivery fee then I'll often take that out of what I'd normally tip.
Papa Johns is aware of that and their online ordering system--and the obnoxious ad they play when they answer the phone before a person picks up--says the delivery charge is not a tip and please tip the driver, so I just don't order delivery from them.
-
@Polygeekery said in Why tipping is a scam:
But, when I get truly bad service I will not leave a tip. But I will also tell the server why, which pisses my wife off.
I would rather leave a small tip in such a case. A dime is a clear message "your service sucked."

Back in my single days I had a good batting average with waitresses. I gave quite a few of them the tip and more.

Here's the thing about tipping. If your country doesn't do it, then, fine, don't tip. But if you come to the US, or any other country that tips, then do it, or you're an asshole.
You can go on all you want about how it's wrong, and I won't even argue. But the fact remains, you're personally responsible for paying a portion of the waiter's wages. That's how it works. If you don't pay, you're a jerk. (Unless you actually didn't know. Then you get a pass until it's explained to you, at which point you're responsible for tipping from then on.)
If you don't like that, then don't eat at places that tip. Go to Burger King instead of Olive Garden. It's that simple.
-
@FrostCat said in Why tipping is a scam:

Apparently you will, because that's precisely what this thread is about. The other stuff you said about the fact that you should tip is that same thing that nearly everybody on this thread already said.
