Hmmmm. I don't have much time to play at the moment but I'll definitely try the new content at some point. Are you guys playing in a league or on standard? League, right? (Also, does anyone want to fill me in on what the current soft league is about?)
-
@blek I only play the HC leagues.
The only thing we know about the new leagues is the name: Harbinger
The current league is legacy league and that was really a placeholder league while the dev'd 3.0. Via a special new currency (league stones) you can modify the effects of the next zone(s) you go to. So you can make the next zone have breaches, beyond and onslaught for instance. It allows for some pretty fun combos, and if you had missed some of the old leagues you could play a version of them. Which was pretty cool. There was also a special very rare key, that provided original versions of some of the uniques that have been altered over the years. Which are almost all overpowered (though a few of them have been buffed, so you actually got a worse version).
Due to all the leagues have league specific uniques that you could once again acquire, many unique and broken builds were possible to play. It was quite a bit of fun. With only two weeks left, if you haven't played it I would not bother with it. Unless you have a fair bit of time or can level fast you wont get into the really fun stuff. Also, the leagues are pretty much dead right now with the BETA and the races going on.
-
@blek Lately, softcore and hardcore have shared rulesets. The current one will be ending within a week or two to prepare for the release, which they haven't told us anything about the accompanying league mechanics for.
But yeah, I pretty much always play in the current league.
This expansion will have a couple new skills and a whole lot of new supports, including supports available from level 1.

So based on the countdown they had up earlier this afternoon servers open in 1h20. There's no way I'm going to be patched by then.
However, the limitation is not my local bandwidth, so it's probably on their end, which means nobody else will be patched by then either
-
@pleegwat The patch has been available for two hours now, and was done rather quickly for me :D
-
@magus It sped up hugely shortly after I posted that. 98% now.
EDIT: And it restarted and now it can't connect to the patching server.
-
@pleegwat I did this through Steam, so there's that.
-
@magus It's on steam?
-
@pleegwat Has been for a few years now I think? You'd have to redownload if you did that at this point, but their patching experience is good at least. They're letting us queue already, so I managed to get in the 7101st position.
-
@magus I'm done patching. Haven't started it yet cause I'm getting my wow archeology biweekly done.
-
@pleegwat Decided to start it in the background. #10905.

wow archeology biweekly
I really should pick that back up as something else to do in WoW besides the two weekly raid nights. Then again, I could just play 7 Days, or Rainbow Six Siege, or Diablo, or...
Urgh.
-
@e4tmyl33t This week's requires darkheart thicket.

Well for that he'd have to wait another 20 minutes. Plus however long the queue takes.
-
@magus But if I did that, I wouldn't have the absolute murder machine my Necromancer became within 4 days of me creating her.
Seriously. In less than 4 days, I took my necromancer from a fresh-faced raiser of the dead to a virtual Grim Reaper able to plow through Torment 13 content with barely any pauses (usually because I got oneshotted by a Jailer+Frozen+Thunderstorm+Arcane Enchanted elite pack, the fuckers). A day or so later I cleared a level 75 Greater Rift, when I think the highest I've ever gotten with any other characters was in the 40s or so.
-
@pleegwat Trying to decide whether or not to try using this headset for it. Thinking no currently.
-
@e4tmyl33t Yes yes, you're having fun with Number Simulator. You could probably just as quickly level with the new version of Skeletons and the new chain skeleton explosion skill, and approach content that's hard for reasons other than 'the numbers went up'
-
@e4tmyl33t What's the point if you finish the game in 4 days flat.
-
@magus You know, I haven't decided what class to play yet this time round.
I think I'll go for strength for a change. Done ranged every time so far.
-
@pleegwat Bleed was buffed through the roof. A gladiator cannot fail.
-
@magus Yup, read some hints of that in the patch notes cliff notes.
-
@pleegwat And the queue is running!
-
@pleegwat Eh. It was mostly to finish the Season completion goals. Now that I've cleared most of that, I don't really have a reason to go back apart from expending stress through murdering the population of a good-sized city's worth of demons. I don't usually have to think much when I play it, I just click around and murder everything in sight.
If I want games that are challenging, that's where I break into R6: Siege and 7 Days, recently. Siege's Terrorist Hunt mode is frustratingly challenging sometimes, since I swear the AI has some of the most bullshit prescient aiming skills possible, but part of that is that I'm also playing something designed for a squad of 5 people either by myself or with one other person. 7 Days is just the long-term "Survive another night and maybe I can scrounge up enough iron to replace that fireaxe I just broke".
PoE is so similar to Diablo that my brain automatically tries to play it the same way, when I can't. I can't just farm around for 3 hours and get a couple new gear upgrades that allow me to do what I do better, I have to push for specific links or pre-plan a skilltree path. It's something that I can find fun when my brain's in the specific mood for it, but if it's not, it defaults to Diablo mode, and I end up either screwing up the character or getting annoyed when it doesn't work the way I want it to and there's no quick way to rectify that.
-
@e4tmyl33t Oh, I know the feeling of playing D3 for stress relief.
I played the necro in nonseason campaign. Which was a horrible choice, campaign is rather slow in loot and with hundreds of paragon levels I hit L70 just after belial in torment 2.

Yeah, once I played the campaign once I can't do it anymore. It's definitely too slow. I just stick to bounties or rifts.
And I was honestly surprised at how quickly I got through that, I think it's a side effect of the particular set armor that they chose to give out as part of the season rewards being such a boost in damage for Skeletons and Skeletal Mages (seriously, I have Skelemages critting at something like 3-4 billion damage sometimes WITHOUT any pylon boosts) that allowed it to be that quick. If I had to actually collect those set pieces through RNG loot drops, it probably would've taken a lot longer.
-
OK I give up for the night.
-
@pleegwat We'd almost surpassed pubg on twitch...
-
Did the servers crash just now? I managed to get my wine version running again, it said I was something like number 6611 in queue, and a few minutes later when it looked like it would let me in I got "can't connect to server". Now it says the same thing on startup in the launcher, won't even let me in the game. Forums are down, too.
-
@blek Its been crashing consistently from the number of people.
-
@magus I guess that's not that surprising... anyway, I'm going to try a Sunder Gladiator unless anyone has a better (=more OP while cheap) idea.
-
@blek Nothing is as OP and cheap as that.
-
@magus Let the cheese begin, then!
Well, tomorrow.
-
What's the common wisdom for a good weapon loadout on a marauder? 1-hand with shield, or two-hand? I get the impression dual-wield is more a thing for the dexterity classes.
-
@pleegwat I like shields, because they make the game less hard. Do what you want, though!
-
@magus Yeah, I went with the conclusion a shield is probably better too. And there's quite a lot of shield passives too.
When I'm in path I always have to adjust a bit because d3 is much more offence-focused - in d3 when choosing between defence and offence the correct choice is almost always offence. Path requires more concious defence choices, but how much is hard to judge when you're currently outlevelling the content by 4 levels.

I'm getting a great bug. I can only load into Lioneye's Watch and one additional instance. Any attempt at going back to LW or to another zone makes the game hang on the loading screen. I guess I'll just farm Submerged Passage (which is the last place with a waypoint I managed to get to before the bug started appearing) till I'm level 100...
The weird part is how it didn't start after a patch, I played fine for maybe an hour today and then it started happening. Sigh...
-
@blek Hm, I think it's a memory leak, it just hanged on me in the middle of a zone when a new effect appeared. God dammit...
-
@blek Welp, problem solved. Turned out I had some launch options set up in my Playonlinux install that were workarounds for ways the game was broken in earlier releases. In this release, the workarounds are what breaks the game - particularly the option that disables asset preloading. Too bad I only figured this out late Sunday, I could have been level 60 by now :(
-
So, league summary so far:
VanillaIceTheSixth, my Ball Lightning freeze/shock build successfully killed the last boss, who my friends and I have decided to refer to as Level 9 Haku in order to avoid any chances of spoilers. The build is bad and I feel bad.
No longer do you hit act 4, then go to easy act 1 content with easy enemies: the game is now a steady ramp of pain (in a good way) through all ten acts.
I started a gladiator, played it with a friend a bit, but not heavily. The name is AndrewTheBloodFiend, a reference so very niche that while it is feasible that someone outside my group of friends would recognize it, they probably wouldn't find it entertaining in the slightest. Obviously a gladiator is the safest bet ever made, so if I bother leveling it, it will be great.
My latest character, who is a complete success, is DrainoDrinkerSupreme, an Essence Drain Berserker. The new Efficacy gem just makes everything wonderful, and the survivability provided by the marauder start and the scion start pair flawlessly with the berserker speed boost to make a very survivable character. Not trying too hard, I only have 3 deaths by act 7, one to cruel Izaro when I was underleveled, and the other two in act 5. I fully recommend trying it out.

But will it build a wall on the border to
MexicoSanctuary?
-
@izzion Why would you make a border wall when you can bloodsplode everything that approaches Oriath?
-
Pretty alright for level 44, don't you think?
-
@blek Show it to Haku!
-
Not sure yet which ascendancy I'm going to take. I'm considering juggernaut - add some endurance into the mix. And probably a load more armour nodes.
-
@magus I'm in act 5 and so far I only ran into him once :/
-
This post is deleted!
-
I reached act 9 with DrainoDrinkerSupreme.
4th death was to a harbinger in the aquaduct.
This build is insane. I'm up to 8k damage on essence drain's dps alone. There isn't an easier build to succeed with, even if you have to plan to spend points getting int and then respec them out later.
DrainoDrinkerSupreme ought to be here if you want to see how it's progressing:
-
Draino finished the merciless lab, which I often don't end up strong enough for, effortlessly.
Next I just have to kill the last boss, and I'll have an endgame character who isn't awful!

All kinds of stash tabs on sale all weekend!
(On a related note, buying 10 premium stash tab upgrades is a pain in the ass.)
