Upgrade to Windows 10 right now or immediately?

There's nothing fun about vegetarians.
You're thinking about vegans.
You're no fun too

Vegetarians taste nice. Especially with horseradish.
-
I like vegans too, but I couldn’t eat a whole one.

EDARGPU... EDARGPU!

I'm passing on the free upgrade and will be waiting until they'll pay us to upgrade.

Vegetarians taste nice.
Unfortunately, that's unthinkable to many races.
Fun fact: vegetarians can eat other vegetarians if they're killed in battle.
-
Unfortunately, that's unthinkable to many races.
Sucks to be members of those races. As I said, vegetarians are tasty.
-
Oh, apparently they aren't vegetarians.
Unless they have a different definition of "kill" or "plant" than I do.
-
Kill a plant? Unthinkable!
Kill something neutral? Sure, I can live with that.
Might as well torture it as an example, while you're at it.
-
So what do they eat? Bits of animals suitably anonimized by someone else, just like most RL humans?

Meanwhile, I had the opposite problem trying to force the Win 10 update to take on my resource-starved Acer tablet. The installer claims that it can use a non-C:\ drive to store the update files, but this is a filthy lie. It will download all 2GB of install data, then the update fails and it wipes alll 2GB of downloaded data before you can try again. After 3 rounds of this bullshit, in the end I had to disable hibernation and set the pagefile to 512MB to make enough space on C:\ to install from there which actually did work. Total install time, somewhere around 8hours, and I'm going to love my next internet bill when that arrives. Twats.
-
Why not use the media creation tool to download once and create a disk to upgrade with? Oh well, at least you got it.

I actually upgraded to Windows 10 last Thursday.
Made sure to turn off all the tracking options in a Custom install.
I still had to tweak a few settings after that, but things are running OK otherwise.
Docking an app to one side of a monitor makes it bring up a display of all windows to dock on the other side of said monitor. I still need to figure out where to turn that off as I quite often dock browser windows to half screen even when there's nothing on the other half.

I still need to figure out where to turn that off
Settings > System > Multitasking
I believe you want to change "When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it." I remember changing it on my desktop when I updated it over the weekend, and probably need to on my laptop (which I updated a few months ago).

"I love Windows 10. It's the best. All I had to do is download a hacked non-Microsoft distro, turn off all the privacy-invading tracking features-- well, at least the ones I can find, who knows what's baked into the OS itself. Then I just have to spend hours or days more undoing all of the shitty UI anti-features. Eventually I'll have something that's ALMOST like the OS I upgraded from, except less usable. I'm the best!"
-
The privacy (or lack there of)-related things were the main thing I disabled and, in case I suddenly turn stupid later, I can always turn them back on.
The only other things I've changed were to make the Search box an icon and make it so Windows Updates aren't being sent out to random people from my PC1.
1 Yes, that's a thing, and yes it's enabled by default. I changed it to be restricted to my local network.
-
Lorne, why did you ever even upgrade from Windows 3.11?
-
Made sure to turn off all the tracking options in a Custom install.
Yeah, when running through the "custom settings" or whatever they label that tiny link, it's a pretty safe bet that anything set to "on" can safely be set in the "off" position without losing anything of value.

USB powered anal beads.
On most systems USB power still is active even if an OS doesn't support the USB controller per se, especially an OS that doesn't even do PCI.

I have a laptop that keeps USB power on even if you completely shut it down. Gotta take out the battery to make the bluetooth dongle light stop shining.

Is there no option to disable the anytime charging thing? I know I have that option on my laptop.
-
I know I have that option on my laptop.
My old laptop had it, but only on one specific port which was labelled as such.

There is if I factory reset it or look for info on how to reinstall the bloatware that lets me control it, but that software is long gone and any remnants were wiped in the Win10 upgrade since I chose not to keep any software.

Wouldn’t it be easier to take the dongle out of the laptop?
-
Easier? How can physically changing stuff be easier then messing about in software settings?

You sure there's not just a BIOS option to disable it?
-

It would get lost! Better to keep it all together.
You sure there's not just a BIOS option to disable it?
Maybe, I'd have to check. I know for a fact there is no option to enable hardware virtualization despite the hardware supporting it - apparently that's intentional.

Usually not on all ports, and there may be a BIOS setting. My (desktop motherboard) booklet specifically indicates which ports have standby power.

That guy bears a disturbing resemblance to our new Prime Minister.

Ooh! If battery changes are software issues, that must mean I won’t need to buy a replacement for the one in mine that’s clearly approaching the end of its useful life. Good to know!
-

You obviously haven't used Windows 10 on a battery have you? The Estimated Life Remaining has almost doubled, despite not changing the battery, hasn't it? Obviously MS fixed your battery issue in software!

You can download new vibration patterns via USB.
