Fuck you Microsoft and your extremely narrow world-view
-
Interchangeable heads on an electric toothbrush are kind of like user accounts.
-
Have you ever seen someone using separate user accounts on home PC?
-
Most of the customers whose computers I set up get one user account per family member plus one password-protected admin account, which solves all the problems that multiple user accounts were designed to solve and leaves them happy.
Most of the customer computers I encounter that were not set up by me use the default single admin account created during Windows OOBE, and I often hear complaints about desktop backgrounds getting rearranged and documents going missing and iTunes getting screwed up by the parents and on and on and on.
I think the main reason more home computers don't use multiple user accounts is that most non-technical people have no idea that such an arrangement is even possible. I also think that this ignorance has two main causes: first, most non-technical people spend approximately zero time thinking about how their computers work unless prodded to do so; second, most technical people consistently underrate the intelligence of non-technical people, and therefore grossly overestimate the amount of time it's going to take to get them to understand the idea.
-
I'm a very technical person, and I still don't make multi-user setups. I just see absolutely no gain from having multiple accounts (except separating my Skyrim saves from my sister's saves, but you can do it with little .bat script too). Of course, if I had something I don't want my family to see, it kinda, sorta could make more sense, but I don't have any such secrets (and all my family members are past the "I accidentally all your documents" stage), and even if I did, there are better ways to protect them.
Of course, if I were to share PC with someone else than my family, user accounts make perfect sense.
-
all my family members are past the "I accidentally all your documents" stage
Many of my customers, as it turns out, are parents of school-age kids.
Children are not careful computer users.
-
I was a child once, and I assure you that I have never caused any havoc on any computer. Neither did my brother, and neither did my sister. Children are very careful about things if taught properly.
Granted, most parents suck at being parents. Also, they don't realize that getting their child another computer is even safer and more convenient than user account mumbo jumbo.
-
I have never caused any havoc on any computer.
You've never lived until you've had a panic caused by self-triggered data destruction just before you have a critical deadline. Nothing else teaches you better to keep backups.

FTFY.
@dkf said:Nothing else teaches you better to keep backups.
Yeah... I'm still waiting for that lesson to take .
-
I just see absolutely no gain from having multiple accounts
How about: “I don’t want someone else’s files, emails, shortcuts, desktop backgrounds, etc. mixed up with mine”?Yeah, sure, the trusted people you share the computer with could all be given their own separate folders inside ~/Documents (adjusted to your favorite OS’s conventions) and be taught to save their files in the right one on pain of whatever, but then you’re just implementing user accounts in a roundabout way.
-
I'm a very technical person, and I still don't make multi-user setups.
That's stupid of you.
I just see absolutely no gain from having multiple accounts (except separating my Skyrim saves from my sister's saves, but you can do it with little .bat script too).
The irony here is that Skyrim's engine is one of the few that actually does put files in the right location and works correctly with multi-user computers, and you're still not benefiting because you're too stupid. (Well. The installation of mods is global when it probably shouldn't be. But the configuration of which mods are activated and which are disabled is user-specific.)
You had to write a batch file? Gee. If only there were some kind of OS feature that would have eliminated that need...
Of course, if I had something I don't want my family to see, it kinda, sorta could make more sense, but I don't have any such secrets (and all my family members are past the "I accidentally all your documents" stage), and even if I did, there are better ways to protect them.
Your sister and you surf the same porn? Huh.
-
You've never lived until you've had a panic caused by self-triggered data destruction just before you have a critical deadline.
Yeah, because children totally have deadlines for anything.
-
-
What fucking school have you been going to where you didn't have deadlines?
-
fucking school
Most any school that exists now after "No Child Left Behind" became a thing.
-
How about: “I don’t want someone else’s files, emails, shortcuts, desktop backgrounds, etc. mixed up with mine”?
Well, no one im my family uses desktop email client or keep things on desktop, and we all use default wallpapers, so I guess these problems simply don't apply to us. As of files - I know where mine are; other people's files are other people's problems. That's stupid of you.
Why is not using a feature that wouldn't benefit me stupid? The irony here is that Skyrim's engine is one of the few that actually does put files in the right location
Lies.and works correctly with multi-user computers
Don't know because I don't use profiles. But given how many recent games put their stuff in AppData/My Documents/My Saved Games, I'd be very surprised if any didn't work.and you're still not benefiting because you're too stupid.
That, or I just found changing env vars easier than creating whole new profiles. As an added bonus, I can have English and Polish versions installed side-by-side.You had to write a batch file? Gee.
First thing that came to mind that sounded like less than 2 minutes of work.Your sister and you surf the same porn? Huh.
We have smartphones too, and we don't share them. What fucking school have you been going to where you didn't have deadlines?
The one where you can do just fine even if you turn in your homework late or even don't do it at all. You know, just like every other school in Poland.
-
I just found changing env vars easier than creating whole new profile
You, uh, might want to see your doctor, that sounds like a seriously nasty case of NIH syndrome....
-
Why is not using a feature that wouldn't benefit me stupid?
(except separating my Skyrim saves from my sister's saves, but you can do it with little .bat script too)

Just pointing out the hypocrisy here.
It "wouldn't benefit you", yet you have to use all these workarounds before you aren't using the feature as intended.
-
All these workarounds. All, as in one. One workaround. Once. That took me three lines to write. And hasn't changed how I use my computer, as opposed to if I were to setup proper profiles.
-
I was a child once, and I assure you that I have never caused any havoc on any computer.
Ah, well, of course your experience informs everyone else's, right?
-
No, my case shows that it's possible to make children not break everything in their reach.
-
I can have English and Polish versions installed side-by-side.
You could probably do that with user accounts as well, but whatever, you seem determined to keep on pedalling this square-wheeled bike, and it doesn't affect me one bit so shine on you crazy diamond, I guess...
-
-
You could probably do that with user accounts as well
A separate profile for my English saves and for my Polish saves? Yeah, definitely makes more sense than simple batch script.
-
Interchangeable heads on an electric toothbrush are kind of like user accounts.
I've seen people do it, but it was always hard to grasp for me: how do you keep track of to whom belongs which head.
-
The replacement heads come with a selection of colored clip-on rings.
-
-
Ha, that's nifty. People I saw doing that () didn't have those, though. Just plain ol' all-same-looking ones.
-
Well, no one im my family uses desktop email client or keep things on desktop, and we all use default wallpapers, so I guess these problems simply don't apply to us.
I guess that teaches me that I should just have said “someone else’s stuff” instead of giving a list of things people might keep on a computer …As of files - I know where mine are; other people's files are other people's problems.
I take it that means nobody else who uses the computer saves files a lot? I know I’d hate to have to wade through someone else’s 129,363 files in ~/Documents and its subfolders to find the one I want. Especially as I’ve noticed other people tend not to organise their stuff as well as I do — though I’m sure their methods make sense to them :)
-
Just plain ol' all-same-looking ones.
The little colored ring is visible here at the bottom of this replacement head:
If you don't bother to clip it on, the toothbrush ends up looking like this
which doesn't obviously look like there's anything missing.
-
No, my case shows that it's possible to make children not break everything in their reach.
-
You can use a Sharpie pen to mark nearly everything. LIFEHAX!!!

Your sister and you surf the same porn?
How did you know?
Something something "same porn because it's literally the same porn" something "incestuous sex tape" something.
Joke-o-meter is broken. 'night, all!
-
Fuck. Now me and my browser cache are on a watchlist. Thanks.
-
You can use a Sharpie pen to mark nearly everything. LIFEHAX!!!
You can't use a Sharpie pen to mark itself. Think about it.
-
Mind.
Blown.
-
I have and I do.
The fact that nobody in my family knows my account password and I'm the guy running everything kinda forced that issue though.
-
As of files - I know where mine are; other people's files are other people's problems.
Oh crap, the hard drive is almost full. I think I'll go into documents and delete my stuff...
*deletes documents*
Oh wait, was document1(1).docx mine? Hope so. Oops.
Really though, the benefit of having multiple accounts far outweighs any possible cost that you could have. Why the $expletive wouldn't you make multiple accounts?
And you clearly haven't met most 10-... About... 18? aged kids. You may have known better, but the majority don't and will screw around on the computer, and it's not related to the parents' parenting ability. It's because most kids that age are very rebellious and very few actually behave properly. You clearly were in the latter category.
-
less than 2 minutes of work
And setting up my accounts took about a minute. So... Yeah...
-
Pfft. Superman could.

I have thought about it, then I went to get the one Sharpie-branded marking pen I’ve ever seen in my life, and confirmed my thoughts that you can use it to mark itself.
The point is held in a plastic cap that’s attached to the metal body. If you pull off the plastic part so the tip comes with it, you can use that to write on the body of the pen. Surgeon General’s warning: May cause unintended marks on nearby objects, body parts, etc. as well as sore fingers.
This is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. If you need money fast, do you start by selling all your paperclips?deletes documents

Yep, because I would totally delete something where I can't make from the name whether I need it or not, without as much as checking the content. Also, I like to throw my driver's license into a fire once in a while.Random fact: I keep all my stuff in D:\Documents, which is a different location than the default C:\Users\Name\Documents. This lets me avoid the issue entirely, and is much better solution if I want to find the stuff later, since a) it's two less folders to navigate; b) it contains all my documents and only my documents, without any crap Windows and 3rd party programs oh so love to put in "My Documents".
Really though, the benefit of having multiple accounts far outweighs any possible cost that you could have.
More annoying boot procedure? Doubt it.And you clearly haven't met most 10-... About... 18? aged kids. You may have known better, but the majority don't and will screw around on the computer, and it's not related to the parents' parenting ability.
Yes it is. Just because 75% of kids end up as walking disasters, it doesn't mean that parents cannot do anything to help it.It's because most kids that age are very rebellious and very few actually behave properly. You clearly were in the latter category.
Once in primary school, together with my friend, we covered entire ceiling of school toilet with wet toilet paper. There wasn't a single spot left untouched. Also, I remember at least two people in my school career having to visit a hospital because of what I've done. But I was always careful to not break any home appliances or make computers blow themselves up.

It doesn't matter what you would do.
It's what everyone else on your computer would do. Do you trust everyone else to not make a mistake? I don't.More annoying boot procedure? Doubt it.
If you mean typing in your password, once? Sure, it's slightly more annoying (?)

Cool.
-
And setting up my accounts took about a minute. So... Yeah...
But it makes turning on the computer take 2 seconds more. 5 if I set up a password. After just a month, it would already offset all gains.
-

I... what? The gains of not having to do stupid shit to seperate user profiles? The gains of not having to worry about other people messing with your crap?
This is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. If you need money fast, do you start by selling all your paperclips?
It's stupid, but I've seen people do that before.
-
Two days ago I almost deleted a whole folder instead of a single file because the focus was on the left pane instead of the right pane.
True story.
-
a) it's two less folders to navigate
There's copious shortcuts to Documents just about everywhere. Going to My Computer, D:, Documents is three clicks, as opposed to clicking the shortcut in the sidebar of any open folder already. So it's actually two MORE folders to navigate.
-
Thank you for providing a good example for me
-
And depending on how long it takes to click, that's probably a few seconds lost on @gaska's time comparison every time you need to open the folder
-
It doesn't matter what you would do. It's what everyone else on your computer would do.
Do you suggest my family is all utter idiots? If they were so stupid to delete random files on my computer, they would already die because of blood loss due to misusing a kitchen knife. And I assure you, they are pretty alive.Do you trust everyone else to not make a mistake? I don't.
Well, I do trust my family. So far, it didn't cause any data loss.If you mean typing in your password, once?
If I were to live only one day, yes, it would be once. And you know this how?
It's an easy conclusion if you don't just compare the children against each other, but also their parents and parents' attitude to their children.
-

Are you suggesting they're all perfect and never make a mistake?
Well, I do trust my family. So far, it didn't cause any data loss.
I do too. I don't trust them to never make a mistake...
If I were to live only one day, yes, it would be once.
OHNOoooooo you need to type in your password once a day.
It's an easy conclusion if you don't just compare the children against each other, but also their parents and parents' attitude to their children.
Nope. Not an easy conclusion at all.
