Unless I can romance Reed with Thomas the Tank Engine I’m not interested.
From what they announced, it's a metro system (slower fast travel), a portable radio, and a few new cars. And some rebalanced boss fights. Not sure which one of those count as hotly anticipated gameplay elements.
More racing, and a romance overhaul.
The new motorcycle handling and motorcycles, together with the car races and the metro are the most asked for things.Probably just me but...
Not breaking netrunner builds again is nice. They keep nerfing them for some reason. Then again, in the lore, you’re supposed to be confined to an ice bath when doing any hackery.
The metro sounds like a waste of time. Nice for screenshots I suppose. If fast travel points didn’t spawn until you got there the driving is so clunky you wouldn’t bother with it. So raises questions about car races. Calling your output around for a quickie doesn’t add much although the sex scenes were really well done.
They should have put the time into more gigs. That part of the gameplay loop(various ways of murdering everyone) was the best part of the game. They really nailed that and the main mission stories.
A lot of very rough edges and still buggy as hell but one of the best games I’ve played.

Genius.
Apparently, the FAA gave him back his pilot's license because they believe he is sincerely remorseful and has learned his lesson. (The judge did, too, and sentenced him to only 6 months in prison. It could have been up to 20 years, and the prosecution was asking for 1 full year.) IMHO, he should never be allowed to fly so much as a paper airplane.

Do you think they might have a new "not crash during game startup" feature? Because that would be nice...
I've never actually had that problem, apart from when i installed bad mods

I'm sure a significant part of the reason they did metro was that a modder had already done it. I've always liked motorcycles over cars - easier to cut through traffic.

Metro is cut content from original release, they had it done at least partially years ago.
A classic high effort update from CD Projekt.

I still don't understand WZF this is. It's ostensibly just a Dungeons & Dragons RPG, at least it says so on the tin. But for all I've heard of it it's really a "romance everyone and everything simulator".

@Arantor That must be one complicated state machine.
I gather it’s for finding dialogue rather than actual state tracking, and I suspect a function of whatever language it’s written in rather than because this was the best architectural choice.
The game was made in Game Maker, and I don't think Toby Fox was particularly skilled in programming when he started. He had his ideas, art and music, and just figured out whatever worked along the way

@Arantor I was talking to my wife yesterday about how old PC video games didn't account for computers getting faster over time so by 1990 they became unplayable. She thought I was bullshitting her because she didn't believe programmers could be that stupid.

PC games were already getting slow-down tools by 1990. And honestly, stuff built in the 1990s was in my experience even worse for that kind of shit until Windows/DirectX brought a whole new realm of problem.
(Let us not talk about gaming on Windows 3.0. That was the fucking worst for timing pissiness.)
-
And actually current games aren’t immune. Take “Super Crate Box”, another GameMaker title back in the day. Doesn’t bind to 60Hz/FPS but to the system refresh rate.
Which on my machine with gaming GPU and gaming display is apparently 240Hz. Game is unplayable unless framelocked by way of having nVidia’s control panel restrict it. Even then it doesn’t pause because it receives the input for pause sufficiently fast that it also unpauses it immediately, even though “framelocked” to 60 FPS.
-
@Arantor you don't even have to reach into Game Maker titles. Every other AAA game has plethora of FPS-related bugs. It's 20 fucking 23 and the biggest game studios on the planet still haven't learned the lesson I learned at 12 years old - do all physics in fixed timestep. E.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/16mmhm8/psa_limit_your_fps_to_60_to_avoid_physics_issues/
My favorite bug of this kind is in GTA5. There's a cutscene-related car parked in a funny way, the suspension springs update in too small increments for the game to handle, precision errors accumulate, the car starts moving and the mission fails. Every. Single. Time.

I only mentioned it because it was after some other comments about GameMaker, and because it irks me personally. I don’t know about bugs in AAA games because I rarely play AAA games.

Yeah, I popped in an hopped on the metro. You can't even wander about in the carts, but are locked to sitting or standing in pretty much teh same spot. And it's pretty much a Cyberpunk riding metro simulator. Without the junkie freking out and the people listeni9ng to shit music on shit speakers.

Apparently Undertale has a 1000-case switch statement. Cue Reddit folks being, well, Reddit folks about the implications which half then clearly don’t understand properly.
No one cares that it’s a 1000 case switch statement, it works, it’s clearly not a performance bottleneck or, apparently a maintenance one, and the guy shipped it and the universe is better for it.
Please be surrounded by a for

for( i = 0 ; i < length ; i++ ) { switch( state ) { case Initial: switch( input[i] ) { case '\n':

You can parse anything with a state machine. As long as you don't value your sanity. A former colleague of mine loved them. I just picked some random variables and case labels for this one.

@HardwareGeek Those who do value their sanity can write parser-generators in tools like lex or bison.

I used lex a long time ago. It's probably better than rolling your own, but sanity-preserving is not a description I would use.

How do you rate PEGTL in terms of valuing sanity? It's a BNF-like parser generator, but uses C++ templates.
-
@cvi:
BNF + C++ templates sounds like it would be very high on the sanity-destroying scale.

Once things get inlined, it will produce similarly awful machine code. High-complexity state machines tend to do so. The real fixes tend to involve writing grammars in completely different ways with coroutines instead of state machines (that's the real fix for most state machine tangles, especially those that come from multiplying state machines together...)
