Basically a lightweight multi-monitor setup on my head.
I tried doing that (somewhat half-assed) with some of the older VR headsets. Granted, they are not (as) lightweight especially if you go for something that has a reasonable resolution.
Resolution might be getting there. Less sure about latency. You still want to use a keyboard+mouse if you're doing any serious work. Fumbling around to find peripherals is annoying -- pass-through cameras help, but have their own problems (latency...). Their inside-out tracking is going to suck if you move your hands outside of the camera's field of view, and let's face it, you're not going to keep your hands in front of you for an extended time in the style of Minority Report. Eye interaction is also not great.
Then there's some other problems. Having a thing strapped to your face for a long time isn't nice. Sweat isn't fun (and although the M2 is supposed to be efficient, it's still an entire device strapped to your face).
-
@jinpa said in In other news today...:
This is why I hate corporations/marketing people. Their solution to "make things more meaningful" is to replace a video of your actual face with a fake video.
Marketing people don't want to have their face exposed, for fear of retaliation

Another issue is that some people have pretty damp eyes; the goggles don't just do nothing, they mist up rapidly!
Is that why..... Huh.

I watched the video. It's actually what Ive been looking for for years. Basically a lightweight multi-monitor setup on my head. Pity its apple and two thousand dollars too much. Getting apple to work in non apple workflows are not worth the effort.
A couple of weeks ago I read about Spacetop.
My thought at the time was you'd punch an approaching co-worker then "apologize" saying you were just trying to dismiss a dialog.

- The “100 inch” doesn't help anything if it doesn't have the resolution to match, and it's still just 1080p.
- It's not “100 inch” anyway, because it just depends on how far the optics puts the virtual image. What matters is the angular size.
- Normally when I have two monitors, I turn my head slightly to look at the other one, not just my eyes. So can it keep the virtual display in space when you turn your head? And is the image stable?

I've used VR desks that did keep screens locked in place in space. That wasn't the problem with it. The headset is heavy, and the resolution is shit for reading on virtual screens. And unless you are at somewhere around 8k, I don't see any way to make it not shit. Also, using a VR or AR headset for hours on end will fuck with your brains balance calibration, and you will feel oddly disconnected for days afterwards.
And for games, I can accept fucking around with my brain, but not for work.

Honestly suprised why Amazon is shooting themselves in the foot here. They do take a fat piece from everything, so this policy will net them less.
not sure what they're complaining about
That they won't be able to facefuck you with obnoxious ads anymore, so it won't be raining big bucks from sponsors anymore. Good times will end. Some of them will have to find real jobs or at least OnlyFans. It will be glorious, you'll see.

It varies a lot by individual. Back when EVE: Valkyrie was being tested I got to try it at EVE Fanfest. I had a great time and had no issues with it (it was only 5 minutes IIRC). While waiting to try it there were people falling out of their chair, unable to walk after, one person puked. It can really do a number on you and I can certianly see myself getting a headache after awhile.

@DogsB I briefly tried finding out it does.
- I don't want to watch a long PR-laden video with crap. ("Their blah blah release is a beautiful super fun game to play" and "the gaming is running well").
- The link at the bottom to git hub ("open source something") dumps you on a page that says if you want to download the toolkit, you have to do so on developer.apple.com. That requires you to log in (so much of open source something ).
- Googling for it gives me a link to the apple gaming wiki. I've never heard of that before and after reading the first paragraph, I basically never want to hear of it again:
Game Porting Toolkit is Apple's new translation layer released on 6th June, 2023. Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK) combines Wine with Apple's own D3DMetal which supports DirectX 9-12. This is less user-friendly method of installing Windows games on Apple Silicon Macs compared to CrossOver or Parallels, however it unlocks the ability to play many DirectX 12 games. Many more games not work using GPTK, however games that use anti-cheat or aggressive DRM generally don't worker do games that require AVX/AVX 2, e.g. The Last of Us Part I.
Things don't worker indeed.
Eh, screw this.

I guess they saw Proton being successful and deciding to copy it, as does. They'll need to iterate over it a few times to get it not to utterly suck balls as is their way, and then turn it into a walled garden to charge stupid money for it.

AIUI, most successful streamers' primary income is from sponsorships outside of Twitch (or any other platform), so if that stuff isn't allowed any more then they'll have to take a big pay cut by relying only on subscriptions and donations. Turns out playing video games isn't a lucrative career unless advertisers pay you to hock their shit

One guy I watch from time to time doesn’t shill any advertiser bullshit, NordVPN, or Shadow League Legends.
So it’s certainly possible. People just have to realize that the streamers who make a living, and even more so those who make a killing, out of it are rare. There’s both a lot of work, skill and an incredible amount of luck involved to get to the top.

I haven’t looked at the commit, so I’m not quite sure how these are actually used, but since it’s a recursive algorithm, a tiny improvement to the base cases could scale linearly to the general case.
Reminds me of the AI improvements to (small) matrix multiplication we’ve seen not too long ago. And if you’d think Strassen’s algorithm is “just 7 multiplications instead of 8” for the naive algorithm, you’d miss how O(n^log_2(7)) is incredibly faster than O(n^3).

@topspin Chiselling little bits out of an inner loop can help disproportionately much. But you need to be ever so careful of the validity side-conditions.
